Blackhall Manor witnessed a family murder 25 years ago. Blackhall Manor, now abandoned, is the focus of The Midnight Man Urban Legend. On Halloween, 4 school friends go to Blackhall Manor as a dare but one of those friends will not leave. The task of discovering what really happened falls on Detective Sarah Noble..

This book was thoroughly enjoyable and perfect for Halloween reading. You'll find some really creepy elements in this book, along with the mystery. I think that the mix between the two is just right.

We meet several characters along the way, each with their own secrets that come out along the way. The story had a satisfying conclusion, but I'm still processing everything that happened leading up to it.

What a way to end 2022 reading this fabulous and engaging book! It is the first I've read of this author and will definitely be reading more in the future!

The storyline and the twists were great and I felt it maintained my interest all the way through!

"If you open your door to the Midnight Man, hide with a candle wherever you can. Try not to scream as he draws near, because one of you won’t be leaving here".

Five teenage girls break in to Blackhall Manor to play the Midnight Game. It was only supposed to be a game, but only four girls come home.

Detective Sarah Noble is placed on the case. She knows the Manor better than anyone after the dark history she shares with it. She has just recently returned to the force after a recent trauma, so she is already unsettled and facing Blackhall Manor just unsettles her more!

I was tense with anticipation and changed my mind several times about who the Midnight Man could be! I never guessed it though!

Can you guess who The Midnight Man is?

The Midnight Man by Caroline Mitchell is one of the best mystery thrillers I've read in terms of keeping me guessing. I had so many theories on where this story would go, but they were all proven wrong. Mitchell threw one curveball after another, timing them just right for the greatest impact. The revelation at the end—the one that solved the primary mystery—kind of felt like it came out of left field, but it didn't dampen my enjoyment -Yessss you should read this. Halloween season vibes.

Unfortunately I had to stop reading at the introduction of Elsie, as I found the fatphobia unbearable - does the obese woman have to also be greedy, lazy, racist and the only character who doesn’t speak with proper grammar? I could have just overlooked this and read on, but it didn’t bode well for the rest of the book.

The Midnight Man is a creepy but very addictive and entertaining read, that you find yourself talking to your friends about as it stays with you long after you've finished it.

WOW! This book was really good. I didnt see any of the twists and turns coming. It had me hooked in. My only complaint is about Elsie, a woman who is described as disgustingly fat and unable to move or clean herself, but is also called 400 pounds. A 400 pound person is not as big as this woman is portrayed.

I am obsessed with this book.
I love that it was part spooky/horror and part crime thriller. Two of my favourite genres mashed into one phenomenal book.
I couldn't put this book down and I never wanted it to end.
I really liked the characters for the most part but the storyline was EVERYTHING.
I need more books by Caroline Mitchell. Cannot recommend this book enough.

It was a very thrilling horror story with twists and turns right up until the end. I liked that the story takes place around Halloween. It was hard to put down once I started reading it. The author did a great job at concealing the real killer right up until the end. The author shows that the past can come back to haunt you.

This was such a great book! Besides being a great spooky thriller, it had so many little background pieces added in of the full life of the protagonist that I wasn't expecting and added so much to the story. There were small moments of potential supernatural things that could also be explained away and everything was tied together so neatly in the end!

This was a perfectly creepy and atmospheric novel - not one to read when home alone! I’m definitely on the look out for more of Caroline Mitchell’s books; this was the first one of hers that I have read, but it will not be the last.

A very good thriller, with old murder mysteries and an interesting detective!

The writer keeps the reader engaged in the story.

I really enjoy stories about famous unsolved murders that creep people out and suddenly the murderer comes back and everyone looses their minds. The fact that is on Halloween, is like the cherry on top! Really cool!

I wasn’t sure what to expect with this book but I loved it. It’s the kind of thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat and reading well into the night. I’m not normally a horror girl but I love Caroline Mitchell so thought I’d give it a go. The supernatural elements work so well and amp up the creepiness.

We all love an urban legend, which makes it 10x scarier when it turns out to be true. There were so many twists and turns which had me hooked. I loved Sarah’s character and her history really adds to the drama. Does she remember that fateful night correctly or did something else happened? Can she really trust the old memories of a traumatised child? I also adored little Elliot and I think he might be my favourite and his chapters gave me goosebumps. I’m really looking forward to more from this series.

The Midnight Man was an absolutely delicious blend of creepy, urban legend games and murder mystery. The characters feel so real. The twists felt like they were happening every time I thought I had figured out what was going on. It was such a great book!

I'm so happy that I was able to read this book. The mystery kept me on edge the entire time which made this book so hard to put down. Gave me just the kind of thriller I was looking for.

This was an interesting little thriller with a compelling detective, a house haunted by past tragedy, a creepy children’s game (a la Slender Man), and a decades-old murder mystery with a tiny supernatural flair.

Sarah is a police detective investigating a missing girl when suddenly the case comes up connected to the town’s scariest “haunted house,” Blackhall Manor. Sarah is not particularly keen to investigate the Manor because years before, as a child, she was the only survivor of a mass murder of her family in that house. But now it seems a supernatural (?) character called the Midnight Man is leading kids to their deaths inside the dilapidated home. While investigating the new series of crimes, the murder Sarah survived is called into question and Sarah wonders for the first time if the wrong person was blamed for the murders and the attack she survived.

I thought this was a nicely written and suspenseful thriller that moved at a quick pace and kept me engaged and interested. Sarah was a great heroine and her backstory was well-developed and interesting. While I had a bone or two to pick with one of the ending twists, I did think the book was well-executed, scary, original, and well worth my reading time. 3.75 stars and I’ll read this author’s next thriller for sure!

Thanks to Embla Books and NetGalley for this nice and spooky little thriller! This would be a great story for Halloween.
