Ehhhh. It was okay I guess 🙃

I had a LOT of trouble getting into this one. I don’t know what it was, but I think it’s a mixture of several things. The generic nature of the plot, the lack of high stakes, the overall feeling that this is something I’ve read before a million times. Don’t get me wrong, I realize nothing is truly *original* anymore because everything has been done before. But I could not shake the feeling I was basically rereading another one of these YA thrillers that was basically identical to at least 5 that I’ve read before in the past. I love a good thriller, went through a thriller phase where I read and and all thrillers. This did not stand out at all whatsoever, and basically rehashed what I’ve read a million times already. I realize nothing is truly original anymore since everything has been done at this point, but with successful thrillers, there’s always some sort of unique touch that makes it stand out. Whether it’s standout characterization, an extra inventive twist, high stakes, or an overwhelming sense of urgency, those are the thrillers that stand out. This was not even close to that.

The ending was also so damn predictable I almost laughed. You know when you think they couldn’t possibly end it that way because it’s too obvious so surely they wouldn’t do that, just for it to be exactly that? If you want your thriller to stand out, at the very least make the ending a harder for us to guess. That’s the whole selling point of a good thriller; the fact that it keeps you guessing on who is behind it all. If you screw up the big reveal there’s not much left going for you then.

Lastly, isn’t the fault of the author or book but the formatting of this netgalley arc was soooooo bad. Like the worst I have ever experienced in my 30+ arcs I’ve reviewed. It was so terrible but as soon as I opened page one I instantly debated not even trying this and having my first non completion of an arc ever. I could not truly accurately review this book because the terrible formatting was so distracting that I skimmed at least half this book. Netgalley requesters beware!

2.5 rounded up to a very generous 3 stars. I debated with a 2/5 but that just didn’t sit right with me, partially due to the fact that I skimmed so much of this because I just could not take the formatting.

Thank you to Netgalley and Wattpad Books for sending me an advanced copy in return for my honest review.

Blackout is the story of Allie, who is suffering from amnesia after a horrific car accident. Allie looks put together the pieces of the life she had before, but soon finds that she may not like that person so much. As she attempts to change things for the better, her past starts to creep up on her in the worst way.

Blackout is the kind of story where the hits just keep coming. Allie can't remember much of her life before the accident, that's hard enough. But finding out who she was before and that it may not be the greatest person. Ouch. Oh but wait, it just keeps going and going after that. The second half of the book is definitely a trip, and it reaches an I really don't want to put this book down point. Who is lying? Who is telling the truth? Who is still out to get Allie? If you like YA books with a good dose of suspense, give Blackout a read.

Thanks to Netgalley and Wattpad Books for this ARC; this is my honest and voluntary review.

Before anything I would like to thank Wattpad Books for letting me read this.

I feel like the beginning was beyond slow, until about chapter 15 when things really started to pick and Allie was slowly figuring everything out. I really enjoyed reading about how Allie’s best friend was the one who wanted to really hurt her over a guy. And Mason, I absolutely loved him. He didn’t even judge Allie at all and was in love with her. I loved how he came to her rescue and helped her fury to figure out who was behind her accident.

3.5 ⭐

Blackout is a nice, atmospheric YA thriller/mystery that was written quite well and was fast and easy to read. It does have several typical YA tropes that some people may not like, but nothing you can’t expect based on the genre and the premise.

I personally enjoyed it quite a bit. It was fun but with a deeper note to it. It made me think about what I would do in the MC’s position, and that’s always a huge plus.

If you want to see my much more in depth review, you can check it out on my book blog NovelOnMyMind.

Thank you to Wattpad Books and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of Blackout by K. Monroe in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you to Netgalley and Wattpad Books for allowing me to read and review this book!

BLACKOUT is about Allie Castillo, a girl who was in a horrible accident causing her to lose her memories. She doesn't remember who she was before the accident, if it was one, her friends or the boyfriend she was previously broken up with wants her back and a mysterious guy wants to try and help her remember.

The story was very interesting and I really liked Allie as our MC. I always find stories like this to be a fun and mysterious read, just in time for the Fall season. I liked the characters, the writing is well-written and kept me captivated until the very last page.

3.7, really. This is definitely a case where the author saved themselves with brevity. Had this been longer, I think some of the flaws would have been more grating. So, as it is, this is a quick, fun read with enough that's interesting to hold one's interest.

Ok, let me catch my breath.

BlackOut, by K. Monroe is going to be an instant hit. I usually avoid young adult novels but I am so happy I took a chance on this one! I was not in the least bit disappointed . This was also my first book by Monroe, but I assure you, she will be on my radar and I can not wait to see what she has in store for us in the future!

What happened to Allie? Why cant she remember anything about that terrible accident? As Allie tries to navigate through the mystery of what happened to her and who she used to be, she soon comes to discover she doesnt really like the person she was.

This book had just the right amount of romance to keep it intriguing and had the dual story line we all craved!

The character development in this novel was well done, I could visualize exactly what Allie looked like and who she was. I almost caught myself referencing her in real life.

This is a made for television type of book, If Netflix or Hulu does not pick this up I would be surprised.

I highly recommend Blackout to anyone who enjoys young adult thrillers!

Thank you Wattpad Books and NetGalley for this gripping compelling story!

The writing flowed effortlessly and the story was packed with mystery and twists as it spiralled its way to a compelling climax!
Quick paced and what a physiological thrillers this was. So many twists it has your head reeling.
Couldn't put this one down until I knew all that was going to happen.
I enjoyed the romance that was added to the mix.... But it never took away from the actual story! Loved it!

Blackout by K. Monroe is an unputdownable YA mystery with a dash of romance. It's like what would happen if the thrilling aspects of 13 Reasons Why met the drama of 13 Going on 30. The story revolves around Allie, who wakes up in a hospital unable to remember anything after she crashes her car into a tree. She only gets tiny flashbacks sometimes. She has to reunite with her family, who she doesn't remember, go to high school amidst the whispers of other students, and deal with boyfriends who she doesn't feel anything for. But who was she before the accident? Who is the mysterious boy in school who seems to know her? And was the car accident even really an accident?

Here is a terrifying excerpt from Chapter 1:

"The last thing I remember is noise.
Images are hazy, and they only come in flashes. Most of them are dark, dripping with night and impossible to make sense of - a glimpse of a tree branch here, a wiry crack in the glass there. Bloodstained fingers. Fragmented pieces of my reflection gazing back at me.
...
A desperate urge to flee the scene propels me forward, but my limbs fail, and I fall to the ground.
When I wake, I no longer know my own name."

Overall, Blackout is an amazing, atmospheric YA mystery that will have you guessing until the end. I was really impressed by this book overall. The way that the author writes about high school drama is great, and it transported me right into the world of this claustrophobic small town where everyone in the high school knows each other. The situations that the narrator finds herself in are also easy to get absorbed into. Who hasn't dreamed of waking up and having a completely different life? I was super invested in this book, and I could not put it down. I had to keep reading until all of the secrets were revealed, and I ended up finishing this book in a day. If you're intrigued by the excerpt above, or if you're a fan of YA mysteries in general, I highly recommend that you check out this book when it comes out in January!

This is a great book and I can easily see it becoming a movie. The main character wakes up after an accident puzzled about her life. Can she make a fresh start or should she returned her old life? I couldn’t wait to see what would happen and I wasn’t disappointed.
