If you haven’t read the DI Callanach series, go do that and come back and rave about it with me. One For Sorrow is the 6th in the series and maybe the first one I’d say you definitely need to read the rest before this one. It is dark, it is emotional, it will make you want to throw it at the wall. The ending will rip your heart out for days.

But all of those feelings are tied to characters we have gotten to know over 6 of the best police procedurals I have read in the last decade. So if I haven’t sold you on these yet, I do not know what else I can say.

This book exploded on the first page and didn't stop until the end! I haven't read the previous books in this series and didn't feel at too much of a disadvantage although some backstory might have been interesting to have. I have since purchased the entire series and am very much looking forward to meeting Luc and Ava from the beginning. I highly recommend this title.

The DI Luc Callanach series is one of my favourites and One For Sorrow blew me away.

I am already looking forward to the next!

This was a nice surprise of a book.

While it started out a wee bit slow for me, it soon picked up and I found myself completely enthralled.

I loved our characters and the book definitely kept me guessing! While I'd figured out quite a bit by the 50% mark, there were still enough surprises - one that completely shocked me.

I enjoyed the book and would love to read the author again!

Helen Fields can literally do no wrong in my eyes.. Another gripping, dark and twisted tale of crime in Edinburgh. I feel so invested in these characters and picking up this book felt like returning to a chat with an old friend. The ending of this one left me sobbing and eagerly awaiting the next in the series.

This is one of my favourite series of all time and this latest instalment definitely did not disappoint

One For Sorrow is Helen Fields at her most dynamic. In the present day, a sadistic series of bombs are terrorising the people of Edinburgh. In particular, the first responders and police seem to be the target. DCI Ava Turner is distraught as the first incident takes the life of a loved one. She vows to stop at nothing to bring those responsible to justice. In the past, we meet Quinn McTavish. She's a young woman just starting out in life, she has a part time job in a grocery store, she goes to college and has a great relationship with her family. Life for Quinn is going according to plan but then she meets Liam Cook and everything changes for her. As readers we know these two storylines must intersect at some point. The joy of a book like this is that you don't know how or when. I loved it!

Helen Fields is quickly becoming one of my favourite authors. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, packed with suspense, twists and turns and an unexpected ending. A recommended read.

This book did not disappoint. Another action packed crime procedural with shocking twists and an ending you won't see coming.

I loved the plot of this book. It was very interesting and engaging.

Of course the writing was fantastic. Very easy to read and follow. There was never a dull moment.

Helen fields is definitely my go to for British crime thrillers. Her books never disappoint.

I definitely believe this series should be turned into a TV drama. It would be fantastic. The characters are really interesting, the plots are engaging and the twists are nail biting.

The ending was such a shock. I can't wait to read the next book in this series now as well as her next standalone thriller.

Overall, highly recommend for all fans of crime thrillers.

This seventh book in the DI Callanach series is fast-paced, furiously intense and full of twists. I love the dynamic between the police team and the cleverly crafted characters that make this so compelling. It keeps you reading until the impactful conclusion.

Have you ever read a book and simultaneously were mad at yourself for taking so long to read it and infuriated that you even picked it up to begin with? This is where I am after reading One For Sorrow by Helen Fields. Never has a book ever given me more emotions than this, and I read a lot. Let me explain.

I’m late on the review of this book because life and accepting too many review requests got in my way. But I KNEW this book was going to be amazing because I’m a huge fan of Helen Fields. I am an even bigger fan of the D.I. Callanach series she writes. I have the box set of the original 5. I have the 6th and now the 7th will be added to the collection. I love them. Bu now that I have read it, I almost wish I could go back in time and pause. Because it was bad? No. It was incredible. Hands down the best Mystery/Thriller I have read in a long time and I am a thriller nerd! But this series has taken me on an emotional rollercoaster that has now slammed me into a brick wall and ripped my heart out of my chest at the same time. I don’t want to spoil it for anyone so all I will say is prepare yourself. It’s not always a happy ending for all. So much chaos. So much heartbreak. So much hope. I’m going to compare Helen Fields to TV producing Goddess, Shonda Rhimes. Just when you think all is calm and happy and wrapped up nice, she pulls the rug out from underneath you.

One For Sorrow is probably the best in the D.I. Callanach series and they were all phenomenal. This one was jam packed with action from the very first second and so many heart wrenching moments that any lover of this series is going to find difficult. As usual, Luc and Ava are perfection together and separate. Natasha is probably one of my favorite side characters as she pops up at just the right time and has a little comedic flair to her. I have grown to love all the supporting characters like Lively and Graham. I wish this was my friend group in real life. The story never rested. You will probably finding yourself flipping pages faster than you can even read and having to flip back. Not a single dull moment. Not a single aspect I didn’t like. Fields hit mystery/thriller gold with this series and One For Sorrow.

Get a copy. If you haven’t read the series, go and do it. I promise you will not be disappointed. These characters will be ones you love for a long time; books I will recommend over and over again for years and years to come. Helen Fields delivered an epic gut punch with this book in the absolute best way, and I can only hope she will give us more in this series eventually. Please?

I recently read The Shadow Man by Helen Fields and enjoyed it very much, so decided to go ahead and read One For Sorrow even though I knew it was the seventh book to feature DI Luc Callanach and DCI Ava Turner. I normally prefer to start at the beginning of a series, but had no trouble reading this as a standalone, and also have six more books to look forward to.
One For Sorrow opens with the shocking death of Ava’s friend, the pathologist Ailsa Lambert. What follows is a series of bombings aimed at hurting as many of the emergency services as possible. They are tipped off and led into a trap by a very twisted killer who knows they have no choice but to respond. Parts of this story are very difficult to read, but also hard to put down. The story is told solely from DCI Turner’s point of view, and it takes a long time to work out the reason behind the horrific attacks, which keeps the reader turning the pages.
The story is told mainly in the present with occasional chapters headed ‘before’ that relate to a young woman called Quinn becoming involved with a man who resorts to coercive control, stalking and date rape before she sees him for what he is and breaks up with him. The two narrative strands continue with no obvious link between them. Both stories are equally compelling as you try to work out how they are connected. The police are also struggling to find any leads as to who is responsible, making it difficult to predict who the next target will be.
One For Sorrow is a cross between a police procedural and a psychological thriller. There are lots of twists and turns before the bomber’s identity is finally revealed. The characters are well drawn and convincing, often resorting to the usual black humour and banter to offset the grim reality they face every day. It is a tense and gripping read, with a strong sense of place and a shocking ending. I hope Helen Fields does not make us wait too long for the next book in this series. A book that relays a story that draws the reader into a scenario of several serious crime scenes, multiple first responder fatalities, mayhem, murder, and a tangled police investigation with no clues, witnesses or logic. Unable to put the book down whilst dreading what carnage the next page will reveal. The two chief protagonists, Ava and Luc, struggle to shed any light on the crimes whilst fighting to retain any impartiality whilst team members and friends are brutally murdered . Simultaneously we are drawn into the story of a loving family, striving to move on when their daughter encounters an obsessive loser unable to accept her rejection and intent on forcing her to see the error of forcing him from her life. A compelling complex storyline, well written often In harrowing detail, with conclusion after conclusion defying anyone to remain unmoved from the complexity of the investigation to the tragedy of the harrowing finale. Many thanks to author, publisher and NetGalley for a five star read on every level.

4.5 stars. Another excellent action packed adventure filled with murder and mayhem. No. 7 in the series and I have read and loved every one of them. There is a problem with this one, though, and that is the very disturbing ending. I hope it is not a portent of the future! The last couple of books seem to have focused more on D.C.I. Ava Turner than Luc, but this is supposed to be the D.I. Luc Callanach series! Eagerly awaiting No. 8 — Ms. Fields, please don’t break our hearts!

Another great episode in the Ava Turner and Luc Callanach series.

A fabulous, fast and exciting storyline runs, rapidly, throughout One for Sorrow - it is a tense and engaging plot to follow. 

Each situation that confronts Ava and Luc is unpredictable and doing the right thing becomes not only difficult but the difference between life and death. It is a horrifying situation that they find themselves in and the weight of responsibility is difficult to manage for them both.

I love the relationship between these two, it has matured throughout the books and now seems in quite a positive place with more than a glimpse of a way forward.

The drama unfolds at a good pace and makes this a fast read with lots of excitement and suspense along the way. It is very cleverly plotted and often surprising. If you enjoyed the earlier books you will definitely like this one.

So I do really enjoy this series but for some reason, it always takes me a while to get into the story. I also find it’s one of those books that is best read in long sittings. It’s hard to dip in and out because there’s a lot going on. Luc & Ava are great characters, although I do struggle with the will they, won't they trope. The chemistry does add some spice to the hunt for a violent killer though. The actual crime was very stressful with a heartbreaking start and a traumatic ending. So many emotions. I found the chapters from Quinn's POV so intriguing, especially trying to work out how her experience was tied to the terrifying murders. It can be read as a standalone but I think you get more from the main characters if you read them in order. Plus it’s just a great series.

Dear Lord. We are traumatised. Burst. Emotive. We need to go eat our feelings but it is also 04:32 and we need 😴 sleep. Those were the words I typed after I finished the book and I did indeed go and eat my feelings despite the time! This is book seven in the series, if you haven't read the previous, do yourself a favour and go read them. There is so much you have missed and the intensity of the relationships/friendships you just need the back story.

We have a bomber in Edinburgh and not just planting a bomb and causing chaos, the nature of the bombs are horrific and some add in some kidnappings just to make things worse. The killings are brutal, we have seen some sadistic killers before but this is another level.

I was horrified but couldn't put it down I had to know why dear lord why and what was coming next because you knew this was just the beginning. I have rooting for Luc and Ava every single book, they are work colleagues, they are friends, the are room mates looking after their bestie, they are attracted but one thing or another always gets in the way. This case is going to push them and the team to their limits. The killer isn't going to stop until someone stops them but how do you stop someone who is so random and deadly.

We also have the before and meet Quinn, such a nice girl, family orientated who we follow through a relationship of control, manipulation and a different kind of horror. It is a busy book, the investigation, Ava dealing with a personal loss and trying to pull through one of the toughest cases ever and the before with the young woman and a different thread of horror, the worst side of humanity and whilst the book is fiction we know the issues very much exist! 4.5/5 for me. This book will knock you sideways - it covers a lot of the worst sides of humanity, it is dark, gruesome, gory, horrific, soul destroying, page turning and brilliant, say goodbye to your day. Hope Fields hurries up and pens the next, I NEED TO KNOW WHAT IS COMING NEXT!

Once again this author has produced a really cracking read. This one brings a really gruesome case to DI Callanach and DCI Ava Turner; someone is planting bombs, aiming to take out professionals - firefighters, medics, police - but they are really struggling to understand who and why. We begin to see the seeds of what is happening as the chapters set in the present are interspersed with flash backs where we meet one of the most callous people I have ever encountered - he's a really nasty piece of work, but is he a bomber, if and so, what is his motivation? Its all drawn together very cleverly, and right to the end we are left guessing who the perpetrator is.

A sad tale, it really wrung my heart in parts. As usual the characters of Callanach and Turner shine through. Excellent. Thank you to NetGalley and Avon Books UK for allowing me access to the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Okay, hands down the best of the series. That's it. Seriously this book had me (literally) perched on the edge of a seat shouting 'NOOOOOO' within the first few pages. Even when I realised what was actually happening I was still shouting 'NOOOOOO'.


So as my binge on this series continues I am onto book 7. The books opening is in itself an eye opener (that's all I can say for fear of spoilers) but the upshot is that there is a bomber that is targeting what seems like innocent people. DCI Ava Turner and DI Luc Callanach have to work out who is behind these bombs but it's pretty clear that every bomb is also designed to kill them too.


I'm going to say that Helen Fields has a very dark and macabre way of writing (which I love) but she even outdoes herself with this book. Nothing is off limits and the terror that not only the General Public are feeling but which every member of the MIT team is feeling is blatantly clear. The story is frenetic but awesome. There are major personal links to many characters for this book so it's hard to expand on the storyline without ruining it for people that maybe haven't read these books. What I will say is that this book I finished on the same day I started it and think it's an absolute belter of a book. If you haven't read this author or series I would recommend binge readint them all like I have in order.....these book s are definitely worth the time!!!

this is the first of the seven=part series that I've read but Im definitely going to go back and read the rest; the characters of DCI Ava Turner and DI Luc Callanach are realistic and compelling, dealing with critical life threatening incidents that keep you on your toes and racing to find out more. One for Sorrow centres around a bomber threatening people across Edinburgh, can the police officers work to track him down and stop him before he kills again?
