EEP! I loved this book! I’m a huge sucker for fairytale retellings, but haven’t ever really enjoyed a Cinderella one. This book was absolutely perfect though. At times I wanted to scream with frustration or shake poor Fran to make her see the truth of things, but honestly it was perfect as is. Fran’s character development was phenomenal, and altogether realistic. I definitely enjoyed the romance in this book, but Fran as a character was more than enough to make me give this book 5 stars. I loved how the author ended the story and wrapped everything up.

DNF @ 22%
Honestly, this book just wasn’t for me. In the 22% that I read, nothing of note happened - Francesca (Fran) was clearly in a toxic relationship with her college boyfriend/fiance, was unnecessarily “quirky” and oblivious to all things pop culture related and was definitely not qualified to do the top secret job she’d been given through a placement agency. Oh, and we still hadn’t even MET the male main character after 22% of exposition and setup. Maybe Cinderella retellings just aren’t for me.

I received an ARC of this novel from HarperCollins through Netgalley in exchange for my review. I have not read anything by Lindsey Kelk before, but if all of her books are as fun as, On a Night Like This, I will be reading them all! This was a modern day twist on Cinderella, but I loved every minute of it. I cheered for our heroine Fran as she navigated what she really wants to do with her life. There were hysterical moments and many swoon-worthy moments which led me to read this book in one setting! Highly recommend this!

I went into this book not knowing what to expect and was caught off guard by how incredibly funny and charming this book was.

Plot: Fran Cooper is a temp who works as an executive assistant and loves to travel even though her fiance prefers that she become a teacher and stay close to home. Within days of receiving a call that a position is open that she qualifies for, she decides to go for is and is hired as an assistant to a celebrity on a yacht in the Mediterranean en route to the exclusive Crystal Ball on an Italian Island. When she is on the island she (literally) crashes into oh so handsome Evan and is instantly struck by the connection she feels to him. When she later runs into him again at the Crystal Ball he promises to escort her and show her a night she won't forget with no last names, no life stories -- just fun. Soon reality comes crashing back to Fran and she remembers that this beautiful, expensive world is where Evan lives and she is just a party crasher and returns to her life, but can she shake what she felt for him and the shake up she must now make to her life to live the life she wants?

Review: This book was so much fun! It was hilariously funny and whimsical and like talking a good friend. It was bingeworthy. Once I started I couldn't put it down. I read the whole thing in one sitting. It is truly a magical whirlwind of a tale which gets you wrapped up and you can't stop wanting to know what will happen. This book is so much about Fran's journey to self discovery more than about the romance but you can't help but love Evan and the swoon-worthy night he gives her. My only hesitation in giving his 5 stars was that I wished Evan had entered the book earlier because I really wanted to have more time to really get to know him. But overall I really enjoyed this book and will be recommending this one. Such a great, entertaining read.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Lindsey Kelk’s writing has a way of wrapping you up in a warm, heated blanket and whisking you off on a love adventure. On a Night Like This is no exception.

An opportunity pops up on Fran’s computer that she can’t ignore: an assistant job that requires signing an NDA. Once signed, she is whisked into a yacht to help singer Juliette prepare and attend the Crystal Ball. Fairy tales really start to appear when Fran herself is snuck into the ball and meets a dashing man, Evan. Evan makes Fran some promises: no background knowledge, no last name, just fun.
The clocks strike midnight and everything has changed. But will Fran be brave enough to stick up and be herself? Or will the glass slipper mirage fall on lost ears?

Fans of romantic comedies and heartwarming reads will enjoy Kelk’s latest. With a mainly character driven read, Kelk delivers with Fran, Evan and side characters. With some hilarious scenes and oh no moments, this book is a perfect one to start off the new year!

Lindsey Kelk writes British Rom Com like no other. Her books are always full of fun and humor and romance that doesn't overwhelm the story. This story of Fran and her unexpected adventure to the most spectacular party in the celebrity world is filled with hijinks and memorable characters. It's a story of friendship. It's has a seriously swoony romance and has a story of how Fran finds herself amid a whirlwind of events. It's light and fun and easy to binge.

This book was cute and entertaining… but a romance? That’s a bit of a stretch.

Had I jumped into this expecting straight up women’s fiction I would have enjoyed it more. However I met this beauty listed in romance and romance I wanted.

Unfortunately, not romance. We don’t meet the love interest until 58-ish percent into the book. There is no building tension and relationship development. We get a meet cute followed but a few few stalker-esque surprise meetings.

When looking at this as entertaining women’s fiction in which our MC is on a journey of standing strong in her own lane and learning the power of telling people no, this is what the book delivers. Not romance.

I’ll not be sharing detailed review of this one outside of NetGalley.

I love when a book perfectly suits my mood. I needed a light and bright read that was easily bingeable and completely irreverent. Lindsey Kelk for the win!
I expected more romance and missed seeing that come across the page and have a hard time with cheating from any quarter. However, I did adore the themes of friendships - both old and new - along with the overall character arc of our MC, Fran.
Fran is desperate for a life shake up and against the wishes of her fiance, Stew, she makes a phone call that has unexpected results. It's a once in a lifetime opportunity to PA for an unknown celebrity, NDA required. It's only five days so what could go wrong beyond a tiny break and a little adventure?
It's in the title, it's in the summary, but the magic of instant chemistry and attraction is what I love most in a rom com. I would love for this to be a film someday. Make it happen, Hollywood!

On a Night Like This, Lindsay Kelk's modern spin on a Cinderella story, is exactly the funny, fluffy, light-heartedly romantic read I needed for a cold wintery day. Sparkling, swoony, and absolutely entertaining from beginning to end. It's definitely more in the women's fiction genre, rather than romance, and Fran's personal journey is much more the focus than her romantic one - but that personal journey does include figuring out what she wants in a romantic relationship, as well as in her friendships, her career, and every other aspect of her life. Delightful and charming, I loved it!

Thank you for this ARC!

I think this book is more of a women's fiction and chick lit than I think of it as being a romance. I thought the writing was sharp and funny!

Didn't hate this one but also didn't love this one. It was suppose to be a rom com but for some reason didn't feel like a rom com to me.

I loved this book!! I read it all it one sitting because I could not put it down. It was the perfect romcom to get me out of my reading slump. I really loved the plot and how it included both romance and friendship. I highly recommend this book!

This was such an unexpected read. Half the book focused on Fran's struggles, and her growth. She is stuck in a relationship that is taking more from her than it gives. Then she gets what could be the opportunity of a lifetime, or could turn out to be a huge mistake, with a job that takes her out of her town and out of her comfort zone. This is when the second half morphs into a Cinderella romance. If it all sounds a bit strange, it is; but somehow it worked. I was turning the pages, wanting to see how things turned out for Francesca. Mostly, this is a story about her personal growth and empowerment, and even though I wish the romance bit had been a bit less of an afterthought, Francesca on her own was interesting enough to carry the whole story, and that was probably the point.

I fancied this a cute little romcom, but it’s so much wittier and strong, independent woman-y than that! Very much enjoyed!

This book is very creative and a sweet love story, but has a ton going on and definitely borders on ludicrous at times. It’s more than you’re expecting from a simple rom com. Most of the novel has a significant amount of detail, almost to the point of overkill, and then the end came a little fast. I wanted to know a little more about how things resolved for Fran in other areas, not just the main love story. On A Night Like This will certainly keep you turning the pages!

This book was a bit bizarre. I don’t really have a better way of putting it. It felt like a story from the POV of a manic pixie dream girl. Fran impulsively takes a job as PA to a celebrity, proceeds to get drunk on a mega yacht with the celebrity, gets left in Italy, attends the charity ball the celebrity was supposed to sing at, then returns home. That’s it. That’s the story. It’s not a romance despite the cover and how the blurb is written. It’s women’s fiction with a romantic subplot (seriously we don’t meet the guy until the 40% mark).
In addition to the plot, the pacing of the book was a bit weird. It was like 40% told one story, 40% told the next story, and the remaining 10% kinda wrapped things up. The book was definitely not what I was expecting and I’m not mad about it but I didn’t love it. Lindsey Kelk’s humor was the one thing that kept me going with the book.
Thank you to @netgalley and @harpercollins for the arc.

The Cinderella fairy tale has never been my favorite so I wasn’t sure how much I would like this story which is clearly based on Cinderella. But it turned out to be a lot of fun even though there is still the insta-love element that always irritates me. But the surrounding story about the heroine being the personal assistant to a pop star was fun and didn’t turn out exactly as I was expecting. And I liked that the heroine rejected a fairy tale ending. I would have liked a bit more of an in-depth look into who he is. He just seemed to be there to be a plot point against which the heroine could play out her story.

voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book that I received from Netgalley; however, the opinions are my own and I did not receive any compensation for my review.

Don’t you just love it when you read a really enjoyable book and then discover that the author has written loads more? That’s the case for me with Lindsay Kelk and On A Night Like This: a romcom that is both charmingly romantic and snortingly funny.

Fran is stalled in her career and in her relationship with her fiancé Stew. In an effort to make something happen, she takes a job as a PA to Juliette,a pop star, who is going to play the Crystal Ball, a mega party for the uber-rich.

Fran and Juliette quickly become friends, despite Juliette’s diva reputation, but then she abruptly ditches Fran and decides not to perform. Going against her every rule-following instinct but with her new mantra of ‘no regrets’, Fran goes to the ball where she meets the swoony Evan. You can work the rest out for yourself.

The plot is a little oddly balanced: the night of the Ball is a good third of the novel, rather shortchanging the build-up to it, when Fran gets to know Juliette which ends rather abruptly and the back end of the romance so that all of its requisite twists feel a bit half-hearted.

There is a lovely theme of female empowerment and of making sure you please yourself in your life choices instead of fitting into what other people want for you (though I felt the relationship with Stew was a little shortchanged because the Ball takes up so much time). Of course that’s not a startlingly original message but it’s nicely and organically done and I was rooting for Fran.

The romance is sweet but I never really felt that invested in Evan. He’s dreamy, of course, and kind and funny but I found him a little generic. It’s in the comedy part of the genre that Ms Kelk really scored for me. Ms Kelk has got the Mhairi McFarlane knack of specificity which brings some really funny lines (I was going to put a few in here as examples but really they only work in context). Of course many are very British references so I’m not sure how they’ll play with audiences unfamiliar with

Overall, for those who like their romcoms heavy on the com and the froth, this is an excellent choice.

Thanks to Harper 360 and Netgalley for the digital review copy.
