Meg grew up living out of a car and poor when her mother dies and the man whom her mother lived with was a con artist and stole everything they owned. Years later Meg decides that maybe that is the way to get back her life and get revenge on the man who hurt her years ago. Kat has a past with Meg and decides to write a story about her life and wants to expose Kat as a con artist because she blames her for some trauma in her own past. Once these two worlds collide Kat has to decide if Meg is really as bad as she thought she was, or is she really just trying to get justice for her past. This was a really great book! I think this author is going to continue to impress us. Thank you for the the ARC. #theliesitell #NetGalley.

After reading and loving The Last Flight, I knew I that I would be reading the next book by Julie Clark.
The Lies I Tell quickly became one of my most highly anticipated mystery/suspense books of the year.
This psychological suspense is one I couldn't put down. Told from dual POVs, we follow Kat and Meg as they uncover truths about one another from their pasts and what led them to their current predicaments. I thought I would be in one character's corner, but it would change throughout the story. These characters are complex, compelling and are the highlight of this tangled web of deceit.
Meg is a woman that is known by many names and many occupations. She is a chameleon and she changes to who she needs to be depending on the circumstances. She is the ultimate con artist that plans meticulously. She is a clever woman that has a past that she is trying to avenge and she will do what it takes to get to the end.
Kat is a journalist that has not been as successful as she would like because of an event 10 years ago. She was following a lead that led her to Meg and then to her undoing. Now she wants Meg to pay. When Meg returns to California and is Kat's orbit, Kat will not give up on the story she has been chasing for many years.
The Lies I Tell is a character driven story that will keep you glued to the pages. There are twists, but it's mostly about the con, about revenge and about strength in a scorned woman. The more I dove into the story, the more I understood the complexities in Meg's relationships she made and left behind. The friendship that evolved between Meg and Kat was natural and led them down a road of trusting the unexpected. I loved that we got a story of the power of women when they come together (even unknowingly) and a woman con artist that bested all her marks. #RiseOfTheWomen
If you like a story that is driven by strong female characters, is original and full of lies and manipulation, do not hesitate to pick up this book. The alternating chapters and events leading up to the final con is written to perfection. 100% recommend this magnificent read!

Another great read from Julie Clark! This time the theme is “revenge is sweet,” and boy is it! Meg and Kat, the two main characters, each want to have “revenge” for what happened to each of them more than a decade earlier. In alternating voices, the reader discovers not only what happened to Meg and Kat years ago, but how they are dealing with the aftermath . . . and what they intend to do about it. A quick-moving storyline makes this a real page turner — and I loved the ending!

How do you con a con artist?
“The lies I tell serve a purpose, tipping karma in the right direction. Returning power to those who have lost it...The difference between justice and revenge comes down to who’s telling the story.” -Meg
Meg Williams is a con artist. You may have met Maggie Littleton or Meg Wilde, but she is one and the same.
Kat Roberts has waited ten years to expose Meg for what she has done to her and to so many others who have crossed her path.
Will she get justice? Or does she have it all wrong?
It took me three weeks to finish this book! I kept finding other things to do and other books to read instead of this one. Why?
It is NOT really a THRILLER or a MYSTERY. It’s a story about JUSTICE and REVENGE.
It is HEAVY on real estate lingo, transactions, and business.
It is PREDICTABLE!
It’s a VERY SLOW BURN.
There are NO twists!
While I somewhat enjoyed the well-written story, I couldn’t wait to get to the end. It really dragged for me and effected my overall opinion. I am definitely in the minority on this one, so please check out other reviews as well.
3.5/5 stars rounded down

Meg Williams is back and Kat Roberts is out to expose her for all her lies.
Kat believes Meg ruined her life ten years ago. And now that Meg has resurfaced at a party for a powerful politician. Kat is determined to befriend and learn all of Meg's dirty secrets. What Kat doesn't know is that Meg has her own reasons for returning that run deeper than befriending the rich and powerful people of Los Angeles as a real estate agent. Meg wants revenge for what she sees as an injustice that befell her mother and landed them living out of a car. What Meg has been up to over the last decade as a con woman will lead Kat to question whether what Meg has done to her "victims" is justified or the perfect revenge. What if the monster Kat thought Meg was is just a survivor like herself, setting wrongs to rights?
I loved this book. I started off not liking Meg but ultimately fell in love with her. Yes, some or most of what she does can be seen as wrong but I know she had her reasons to justify her means. I started off rooting for Kat because I got her backstory before I got the whole picture behind Meg's actions. Ultimately I liked both of these complex characters despite Kat's naivety and Meg's ruthlessness. This thriller will engross the reader and keep you on your toes.
Thank you to NetGalley and SOURCEBOOKS Landmark for the ARC. All opinions are my own.

Compelling topic, and quite a fun read...provided the reader is capable of suspending all disbelief.

What a thriller! I got so engrossed in this book that I finished it in 2 days. I was invested by the end. Thank you NetGalley for this ARC.

The Lies I Tell was my first book by Julie Clark and after finishing this one I quickly made plans to finally read her debut thriller, The Last Flight! I love multiple POVs within a suspense story because not only does that keep me engaged but also I think it helps sprinkle clues from the various characters to lead you to an exciting ending. And phew I honestly don't think I would have predicted such an outcome! I could totally see this play out as a limited series on Hulu or Amazon because there is enough substance in the story to entertain an audience on the silver screen. The revenge and deception plot was juicy and I would love to see an actor bring Meg Williams to life. This is a perfect book to pick up for a beach vacation or a day relaxing by the pool!

Julie Clark does it again. In The Lies I Tell, Clark is back with a dual storyline book with the fast-pacing, social commentary on gender & society and strong female protagonists. I read this cover to cover in one sitting during my flight to Hawaii and am now recommending it to everyone.
Kat Roberts has been waiting for ten years for the women who ruined her life to return. Meg Williams has returned. She seems to have as many secrets as she does aliases. She's a con artist who creates a new identity each time she has a mark or a job to execute. Their stories are connected and they both need the other one to get what they want. So, they're working together, but keeping secrets and seems thing to be escalating to the point where they will explode soon.
It was a fascinating story that challenged pre-conceived notions around women being con artists as well as what her motivations truly are this time around. I love the way that Julie writes stories that connect women's complicated stories and include so many of the hardships & trauma that are normal to womanhood. If you're concerned about triggers, sexual assault is definitely mentioned, but even more so are references and examples of manipulation, narcissism and other mistreatment of women.
One thing I love about Clark's thrillers is that they're often very thoughtful about the women's issues that they address and instead of playing into the cliches of woman as unreliable narrators, she portrays women as having agency, creativity and cleverness.

I loved Julie Clark's previous novel, The Last Flight, so when I saw this I jumped right on it. Not only was it as good but dare I say it was even better! Lots of twists and turns, surprises and a fantastic ending! She's easily becoming a favorite!

What’s better than a book with a strong female protagonist? A book with TWO of them! Kat Roberts is a journalist whose career is languishing around the bottom of the profession, as she write puff pieces, clickbait, and top-ten lists for pennies-per-word. Once a promising investigative journalist, Kat’s life was destroyed in one horrible night ten years ago. Following a lead on a hot story put her in a precarious situation, and Kat has never stopped blaming the tipster. Enter Meg Williams – a female con artist, scamming men and carefully plotting to destroy them is her life’s work. She’s been flying under the radar for the last decade, moving from con to con before she can get caught. Now she’s back in Los Angeles, about to pull off the biggest and most personal scheme yet.
The suspense in “The Lies I Tell” is nothing short of spectacular. In a genre where not much feels new, here comes a truly original story line and the most complex, multi-layered characters I have come across in a long time. You might expect to hate Meg, but you’ll get as sucked in by her as Kat does, and you can’t help but root for her. This twisty tale kept me guessing the entire time, and the ending was incredibly satisfying! I wish we knew what would happen next – is it too much to wish for a sequel?!
Many thanks to NetGalley and Sourcebooks Landmark for providing me an advance copy of this book.

You do not want to miss a single word or page of this book!! It’s a real cat and mouse game as to who best is the con artist - Meg who is conning everyone and Kat who is conning Meg for a story. The ending is fantastic!

The Lies I Tell by Julie Clark is an amazing, thought-provoking domestic thriller that pits two women against each other as they both aim to seek revenge and justice. Someone has been conned and someone is out to be ruined. But what if they’re wrong? Someone must pay the price.
As we follow these relatable, hardworking women, we are peppered with knowledge that answers some of the missing pieces in their stories and also gives us new, vital information. Both women are wrapped up in lies and/or unvalidated beliefs about each other which leaves the reader on edge as we learn the truth about what really happened.
I enjoyed how the author wrote about two equally strong protagonists, as she did with her 2020 book club favorite The Last Flight. I can hardly imagine how the author created this timeline and outline for this book with all the lies and twists to keep track of. I must admit that having two main characters that have short, three letter first names was a bit confusing at first.
I really enjoyed this quick, suspenseful and enjoyable read.

This book is addicting and totally absorbing! Between trying to figure out what Meg's big con was, whether Kat was going to catch her, and whether or not I should trust Scott, I couldn't put this book down. I'm a big fan of Julie Clark's work, and she really outdid herself here!

The story follows Kat as she tries to expose Meg Williams, a con artist who upended her life ten years earlier.
Julie Clark does it again with her fast-paced storytelling featuring strong female characters. She flips the script on the unreliable female narrator and gives us Meg, an anti-heroine who is smart, cunning and a fighter. We get alternating narration between the past and present and Kat and Meg's points of view, revealing ulterior motives as our leads seek justice from people who abuse their power.
I don't want to give too much away, but will say I highly recommend picking it up when it hits shelves June 21.
Thank you NetGalley and Sourcebooks Landmark for my advance copy.

Comes out June 22, 2022!!!
4/5 ⭐️!!! I really enjoyed this book. I have not read Clark’s other novel, The Flight, but after this book—I’ll have to check it out!! From the very beginning, this book grasped my attention. I WAS HOOKED! After reading the first 40% of the book, I really wished that the past/present went back and forth instead of all at once, but I think it was a good move!!!
Thank you NetGalley for this advanced copy, in exchange for an honest review.

This was good read the building of suspense. The end was nota huge episode, but an interesting one. The storyline of a young lady spending years trying to get revenge on someone who wronged her Mom and her decades previously leads to some interesting ideas. As Meg tries to get revenge, other stories emerge. The book is a good read, kept me interested although I kept waiting from an unexpected turn. Most of the twists were not surprising.

Sometimes I have to remind myself that the author is a newish author (sophomore book) because her writing of thrillers has the hook from the start that is missing in so many books I pick up from this genre.
I loved The Last flight, it was on my top of the year list, so it was without question that I would ask (beg) for an arc for this book. And it did not disappoint.
I struggle to review this without spoilers so what I am going to say is that the author has captured the reader in a spot in which the character we aim to hate, becomes the character we admire. It’s not what she does but why she does it.
So good. 4.5 ⭐️

Definitely one of my favorites of the year. Kept me on my toes and hooked the entire time. Fantastic!

It may have been ten years but Kat Roberts is finally going to get her revenge on the person she thinks is responsible for ruining her life. This was a fast, fun and easy read. The characters are complex and descriptive with their faults and strengths. The plot is intriguing! The more I read the more I was sucked in! It's a quick pace story with two timeliness but it moves smoothly between the past and the present. Definitely a book that will have you turning the pages long after your bedtime!
