Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read an ARC of the Lost.
This is the second of Mr. Burton's canine books and I have loved them both.

The plotting was good and there were some wonderful twists and turns. Even the "bad guys" had a sympathetic side but the dogs and a five-year-old girl steal the show. I so much enjoy a good mystery/thriller that also has a nice sense of humor that appears at exactly the right time.

I recommend this book especially if you love dogs and know how incredibly faithful and loyal they are.

I feel like the cover of this book does a disservice to the story. I chose this book partly based on the cover which makes it look like a standard K-9 type police procedural. I read the first two chapters and almost decided to quit reading because I wasn't enjoying it at all. Then the light bulb went on and I realized this was not in fact a procedural but a cozy mystery. Suddenly all the small points that were annoying me as a poorly written and poorly researched (standard procedures being ignored, cartoon-like characters, mad-lib style over adjective descriptions) I could just gloss over as being typical, not-to-be-taken literally events found in all cozy mystery series. Once my expectations changed I enjoyed it much more even though it isn't my favorite genre. I think the story would have been more successful if the author had leaned in a little more to the cozy mystery genre - it seemed like as a reader I was expected to take things more seriously than the research and writing warranted.

The mystery was a good one with lots of twists, but the format was disconcerting. The author put you in the mind of all of the relevant characters in a time sequential manner. If you are expecting a good mystery, you win. If you are looking for a mystery led by Human Remains Dogs trained and living with Mace Reid, you might be flummoxed and possibly disappointed. I went in without any real expectations, so I enjoyed it.
I requested and received a free ebook copy from St. Martin's Press/Minotaur Books via NetGalley. Thank you!

Even though some bad things happen and the dogs are cadaver dogs. This is a fun series. Jeffery B Burton does a good job with his characters and I love the dog names..

The third book in the Mace Reid K-9 Mystery series is a little less interesting than the first two. The problem is that the dogs are not in this book as much as they were in the other two. Mace and Kippy are working together on a mother/daughter kidnapping case that turns to murder when the mother is found dead. Golden retriever Vira tells them who the killer is, but their investigation seems to stall and weaken as the book progresses. I still like the series but would prefer to read about more dogs and fewer people next time. Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press and Minotaur Books for providing an ARC.

The pack is back. I missed these guys, but I didn’t find their involvement in the story to be as emphasized as in the past. A lot of time was spent describing ancillary characters, and this time seemed to drag. I would have appreciated more time dedicated to the canine characters as their individual traits are much more interesting than the Russian mafia bad guys.

I kind of went back and forth on this one?! The storyline was ok, it was interesting, it had suspense, intrigue, action but I felt lost quite a bit?! The story was just confusing I guess?! Idk how else to describe it but I would finish a chapter and be like " what was that I just read?!" It didn't happen all the time but enough to mess with me lol but it wasn't A all bad and I would say it's worth reading just not my top favorite! Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me!
