The Jungle Book
by Carly Madden

I received an e-arc of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I’m a big believer in board books and that they are not just for babies and toddlers. We own many board book versions of school aged picture books - it makes them more durable and thereby more accessible from a younger age. Reading small children more challenging texts in format they can grow into is an excellent way to raise a reader. Layered board books are always fascinating to children. I read this book with my 5 and 8 year old children who found it engaging. The story line sticks to the traditional version. The illustrations and phrasing keep the book feeling fairly gender neutral and easily accessible. 5/5 Well done.

A cute book that summarizes the story of The Jungle Book pretty well for younger children. Though, I will say that is exactly what it feels like: a summary and not a fleshed out story. I believe that this book would be good for young children, espeically those that love The Jungle Book story or animals in general.

My favorite part of this book is the layout. I like how the pages get bigger as the story continues on. It adds a new dimension to the story and will draw young children into it. Children love stuff like that. My preschoolers would love to look at the beautiful illustrations and also this book in general. I think that this book would look really nice in person. I'm always trying to find new books to read to my students and I believe that I might pick this one up for them to enjoy.

An action packed abbreviated version of The Jungle Books that little hands will love. The illustrations are vibrant and the story is exciting. I liked how the pages get larger and larger. Kids will love interacting with this book!

Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for providing this ARC.

I really liked the bright colors and the condensed telling of the jungle book. The varying sizes of the pages help provide some additional engagement for younger readers, my son likes turning the pages himself so (I assume this is a board book) the different sized pages would help him grasp them easier. It also helps add movement to the story which is a nice element. The only thing that makes it difficult is learning the characters so quickly in the short story - however I don’t know how you get around that while still telling the story

This story was very well written and my 5.5 and almost 3 year old both loved listening to me read it and loved looking at the pictures. This is a very cute picture book and was well illustrated and we loved pointing out the different animals and other things we found in the scene!

This is a brightly colored board book condensation of Disney's version of Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book. The pictures are bright and engaging.

Sweet fun book. Well summarized. Not right for the classroom but a fun book to at home with a young child.

A very simple retelling of The Jungle Book suitable for toddlers and preschoolers, this book will surely capture attention due to its cutouts and flap-style design. The colors of the illustrations are so brightly saturated and the detail in each picture is fascinating. Young readers will enjoy finding all the small details on each flap and seeing how the illustrations are tied together with strategic punch-outs on each page.

Due to the interactive nature of the book, this would be best suited to small group or one-on-one reads. An adult reading partner should be available if trying this as an independent read since early readers will likely need support to decipher the unique character names. This is sure to be a popular addition to school and classroom libraries for pre-K and early elementary.

Many thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review!

A book with a fun construction, and a concise recap of the original story, but not really one that gets any of the detail, heft and character across, making me think such a lengthy source material cannot be adapted with such brevity. Still, it is brightly coloured, and it certainly has a lot of animals – so this might please some very young people for whom it is intended. I think, however, they will most appreciate the structure of this item – and the way the pages increase in size as the book goes along. We start with the image and the text squished onto a small piece of diecut board, but the spread behind that is taller, and the one behind that is taller still, etc, until the last page is the only full-sized one. Also, the pages have holes through – this is no small piece of engineering, and about the only chance anyone would have of putting their fingers through Mowgli's pants. That aside, you have to consider how much a book would appear to be a page-turner when you know that every page following the one you're on is bigger, busier and more important. This really should help boost book fandom in the very young, so it's a shame I didn't think the text up to a heck of a bunch. It's the second of four that are planned, apparently - and I certainly admired the first (https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/4332759561). So I wouldn't cross it off your list immediately.
