I received a free digital ARC from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

Blood and Fire by Kim Mullican follows Maia Delacroix, a bounty hunter in a supernatural world with human roots. Maia has her life pretty much how she likes it until she is surprised with custody of a teenage, very distant, relative who possesses unusual powers.

This is a fast paced, action packed story with interesting characters (who make questionable choices like giving alcohol to a minor). The author’s writing style is readable and reminded me of Laurell K. Hamilton in characterization and dialogue. The authors note states that this book contains Easter eggs to future plots in this world which I look forward to learning more about.

Overall, this was an enjoyable read and solid opener to a new series.

This book was like candy. I started it & didn't stop reading until finished. If you like Briggs, Harrison & Bishop this is a must to try series as I am looking forward to reading more. A humorous fast moving paranormal with a female mage bounty hunter that has inherited a witchling child relative she never knew existed & has to deal with her in an already complicated life as well as what happened to said girls mother. Throw in a hot harley riding half demon lawyer & you got some sparks

Blood and fire tells the story of a mage named Maia who tries to find her way navigating her job as a supernatural bounty hunter with her newfound responsibilities as a guardian. The story seems to be quick paced, but the author ensures each main character has the opportunity to fully develop. While the main intrigue is discovering who killed Elaina’s mother, mysterious murders are popping up all over. Plus, Elaina’s abnormal, even for a supernatural, powers seem to make her a beacon for others trying to kidnap her. Will Elaina and Maia ever find out who really killed her mother?

I received this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I am happy that I did as I really did enjoy it. Usually, I am not a fan of vampire or shifter involved novels but this one due to the relatability of the characters and intrigue has whisked me away. I early await the next book!

This was my first read of 2022 and I loved it.

I absolutely enjoyed this book, there was of course some ups and downs throughout the story, but I can see the amazing potential this series has and can't wait for more. I am a huge fan of the Mercy Thompson series and can easily see this being like that, where each book focuses on the amazing different side characters. This book touched on the start of wonderful world building along with introducing us to many different side characters that each have a lot of potential to step up and help / be the main focus with the main characters to make so many amazing different stories. I loved Liam and Doc and really want to know more about each of them, also the Vampire clans, and the different shifts with the introduction of the Alpha of the shifters helping out in the story. I am really excited to see where this series goes.

Such a great read! A mix of paranormal fantasy and mystery genres, Blood and Fire is the story of Maia Delacroix - A tough-as-nails, whiskey drinking, bounty hunter with a talent for finding magical items… and trouble. When summoned to appear before the Mageri - the legal authority responsible for all Mages, including Maia - the last thing she expects is to become a foster parent to a teenage relative she has never met.
I loved so many of the characters in the story, especially Maia and Elaina and the relationship they develop. Liam, the half-demon lawyer, was also a favourite - I look forward to seeing more of him in future books.
I would recommend this book to YA and adult readers of fantasy novels, especially fans of shifter, vampire, and magic wielding characters.

My first read of 2022 was Book 1 in the Alpha and Omega series: Blood and Fire by Kim Mullican.

This was a book I wanted to like. The premise of the story with Maia is one that I'd usually love.

Maia is a hunter, she searches for people and relics. One morning she is called upon by the Mageri and they award her guardianship of a teenager - Elaina.

The story takes you though a couple of sub plots linked to the main plotline of a who dunnit. Who killed Elaina's mother.

For me the story didn't quite hit home, characters didn't feel developed so you didn't form any real attachments to them. The story felt a little obvious, it was apparent quite early who was involved and there was no plot twist at the end to surprise you.

All in all an easy read to start the year. I don't hate the story but nor could I say I liked it. My rating is 2/5.

Thanks to @netgalley for a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I really wanted to like this book, but I just couldn't. The premise was interesting but the execution was not.

The world building was okay but the characters were flat and not particularly interesting. The dialogue didn't ring true.

I appreciate that Netgalley gave me the opportunity to read this ARC. This is my honest review.

Great spin on an urban fantasy in the sense that supernaturals are "breeds," and there's a different creation story for each - born v. made - and not always with the same limitations we're used to. Pulling in Atlantis as their "lost" city so they're removed from humans.

This version is an ARC, so post-editing it may go up a half-star in rating; It was just a bit too confusing at times to follow - wrong name or jumped around a bit, etc. Didn't have the opportunity to delve much into any of the characters as it was go-go-go from the first page. I feel like there are a lot of questions around origins, breeds, story that remain unanswered.

Definitely intrigued to see what's next for Maia, Elaina and Liam in this world. May have to look at the author more to also see if there's a series around the Alpha with the dual-colored eyes and his mate. Seemed odd to include him otherwise.

This was my first from this author, and being the first in a new series I wasn’t sure what to expect. I can say I was positively entranced by this world the author weaved and the characters throughout. I’m sad to not know how long I’ll have to wait for more of this world though.

This was a complimentary advanced reader copy provided by the publisher in exchange for a honest review via Netgalley.

"One did not simply blow off the Mageri. So, I did what any sane person would do. I grabbed my bottle of Jameson"
"Family bonds are stronger than any magic"
"You're afraid of being a bad guardian, but you're not afraid to call up one of the scariest guys in the area for mom advise?"
I really liked this story!
It was easy to get into and the dynamics between the main character and the young girl, she suddenly is in charge of, made me remember a bit of the Witcher tv show ... and I absolutely loved that!
For fans of complicated word of mixed creatures, shifters, sexy vampires, demons and hunters, this is the book for you!
A book where you're going to follow a woman brought away from her human family to become a relic/creatures huntress. A woman used to her own independence, until she suddenly finds herself responsible for her fifteen-year-old great-niece and has no clue how to deal with a teenager!
In the meantime mystery resurfaces and a hunt stars but we've got no idea where it is leading to.
And don't let me start on the Harry Potter references ...
"'This bitch called me a half-blood' ... 'Think she read the whole Harry Potter series, or just the first book?'"
I loved how fluent and easy going the writing-style was. I loved how weird and complicated the relationship between the two main characters was and how badass Maia actually is!
I loved the fact that it shows how true and honest a mother-daughter relationship can be, even though the former one is not the biological mother but a person who takes care of you as one!
And, which is more, the romance, blossoming in here, can be the prelude for something deeper...
I felt engaged into the story from the very beginning and I'm really excited about a possible continuation for this series !!!
"Are we having a moment? ... If you cry, I'm punching you"
"Do I ask? Do I respect your space? What the fuck am I supposed to do?"

I had never read this author before, but I thought this book sounded interesting. At first, I was worried orphan meant a little baby, and I was curious how it would go. No, the orphan is a 15-year-old girl. Whew. It didn’t take long at all for me to be drawn into this book, and it didn’t let me go until the very end. Was this book perfect? No, there were a couple of places that could have used a tiny bit of work, but that was outshone by the wonderful characters of Maia, Elaina, Liam, Avery…well, just about all of them. Great writing and an interesting plot kept me captivated, too. This is an author to watch, and I think she’s going to go places. Give her a try! Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

Well it really did quench my thirst for the fantasy. I liked it, it was quite enjoyable read for me. Although, I felt the beginning a little bit slow for my taste.
