this is a beginning look at Florence Nightingale. It is very basic and very general. It makes Florence Nightingale come across as someone who knew to keep a clean house rather than as someone who knew how to nurse. Yes, cleaning and sanitation is a big part in nursing but for that to be noted as her biggest contribution is a bit underwhelming for the contributions she actually made. This is one of the books in this series that I think could have been done better but I am glad it exists.

I am always looking for a great biography to use in the classroom. This book was a great resource about Florence Nightingale and made the information both interesting and easy to understand. I would purchase this both for a classroom and my son. The pictures were lovely.

My favorite part at the end was the timeline. Those always summarize the book and the person's life in a meaningful and important way.

Thank you NetGalley for this ARC!

Florence Nightingale is one of the latest editions in the Little People Big Dreams series and didn't disappoint.
Florence is well known for her service to nursing and modern medicine of today and its so inspiring to hear about her life. This book shows children how Florence came from a wealthy family but didn't aspire to the life they wanted her to have. Her family wanted her to marry and settle down but Florence wanted to work and make a difference in the world. What an inspirational woman she was! Children will learn that we don't always have to conform to what others want us to be or do and that if we believe in something and chase after it wholeheartedly - we too can achieve great things and make a difference.

“And every May, for little Florence’s birthday, [12 May 1820] the whole world celebrates International Nurses Day. A date to honor the mother of modern nursing, and the work of all the brave nurses shining a light on us all.”

Florence Nightingale’s story is not one of rags-to-riches, but one of riches-to-service. She was born in Florence, Italy, to a wealthy British family, and was both brilliant and caring.

My Goodreads and Amazon reviews have a picture with the caption:
Florence, bandaging the leg of a wounded owl

Florence’s father took his daughters around Europe to give them the best possible education.

My Goodreads and Amazon reviews have a picture with the caption:
“Every time they arrived at a new city, Florence was fascinated to see the hospitals there.”

She wasn’t interested in dressing up to go to parties or dancing. She spent her time visiting people in her village who were ill or poor. She realised caring for people was what interested her. When she announced she was going to become a nurse, her family were less than enthusiastic.

My Goodreads and Amazon reviews have a picture with the caption:
“All that was expected from her was to get married and live a comfortable life for ever after.”

Note her father’s look of concern, her mother’s “oh-woe-is-me” collapse, and her sister’s deep frown. There’s no support for her at all. But she kept studying and eventually went to Germany to continue learning about nursing and taking notes.

Then she went to London and put her experience to use as head nurse in a hospital.

My Goodreads and Amazon reviews have a picture with the caption:
“In a few weeks, she showed that being in charge was not just about giving your best, but about helping everyone else to do the same.”

I very much admire talented people who are able to both teach and delegate! She proves to be such a person. When the Crimean War broke out, Florence gathered 38 volunteers, including her aunt and 15 nuns. Off they sailed to Constantinople.

When they arrived, she saw conditions in the hospital were so bad that patients were getting sicker, not better.

My Goodreads and Amazon reviews have a picture with the caption:
“That hospital was the darkest and dirtiest place they had ever been to!”

Ah, but Florence Nightingale knew how to get things done. She told doctors to wash their hands before treating patients, and she set everyone to work scrubbing and scouring, changing linens and letting fresh air in.

My Goodreads and Amazon reviews have a picture with the caption:
“Thousands of men were saved thanks to Florence. They called her The Lady of the Lamp, and back home, everyone was waiting to meet her—even Queen Victoria!”

She used the money she was awarded to open a hospital and training school for nurses and even to write a book.

This was a woman with a true calling, and the world is a better place for her, even a couple of centuries later.

My Goodreads and Amazon reviews have a picture with the caption:
Every year, on May the twelfth, Florence Nightingale’s birthday, we celebrate International Nurses Day and remember this remarkable woman.

This is one of my favourite Little People BIG DREAMS stories. The illustrations are something like paper dolls, very attractive and effective. They show the wealth and the rough conditions and the moods on the faces with very few lines.

The bio at the end with the four real photographs is interesting, and there are two books recommended for further information.

And Happy birthday, Florence!

'Florence Nightingale' by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara with illustrations by Kelsey Garrity-Riley tells the story of Florence Nightingale in the Little People, BIG DREAMS series.

Florence was British but named after the city she was born in. She was lucky enough to get a good education, but always gravitated towards the hospitals and the sick and injured. Her family didn't want her to be a nurse, but, thankfully, she persisted.

It's another stellar entry in a jewel of a series. The illustrations are classic storybook perfect this time around.

Florence Nightingale is a charmingly illustrated picture book about the life of Florence Nightingale, the mother of modern nursing. Clean and clear illustrations and how nursing morphed from a menial job to a respected profession with standards.

Named after the Italian city of Florence, Florence Nightingale was born into a wealthy British family. She received fine education.
Her family didn't agree to her dream of becoming a nurse, but she knew that caring for others was what she wanted to do.

This little book tells the story of the godmother of nursing and one of the most important figures in the modern history of medicine.

I really enjoyed reading the book. The art was amazing as always and the information were invaluable.
Highly recommend!!

This is another in the "Little People, Big Dreams" series, and once again it is very well-done and a great introduction to the history of nursing. The spotlight is on Florence Nightingale, to whom we owe so much, and the details of her upbringing and decision to go into nursing are inspiring. Yes, history is of course much more complicated than this, but this serves as a fantastic springboard to get young children interested and give them basic information.

The mother of modern nursing, whom with simple methods saved lives in Crimean War. But Florence was not known for her brilliant mind, instead her compassion for sick people touched others deeply. The same compassion that drives her to open a hospital, A really good example for kids on compassion for others.

This is the first book of the "Little People, Big Dreams" series, that I've had the pleasure to read, and I found myself enjoying it.

The language is simple for kids to understand and the illustrations are beyond amazing and adorable.

My positive review however, has to come with the neccessary "note": While I do find the concept of teaching kids history, to be beneficial, one has to keep in mind that history and people are more complicated than this, and it is possible that books like this one, either 'sugarcoat' or gloss over some of the more 'complicated' aspects of history. But, even with that in mind, I still see benefits to reading these type of books, and I'd love to read more of these series.

This was an adorable little book! The illustrations are so cute, and it is written in a way that is simple and easy to understand. I didn’t know a lot about Florence Nightingale, so I Ioved learning a little bit more about this amazing lady.
This book was structured very nicely. First, it talked a bit about Nightingale's early life. I actually didn’t know that she was from a wealthy family, so she chose a life of hardship and struggle. Then, her training to be a nurse, actually becoming a nurse, and her bravery in going to the war. She saved so many people’s lives by preventing needless death. The book ends with explaining that we celebrate International Nurses’ Day on Nightingale’s birthday, and it has a lovely illustration of a group of nurses.
While the picture showed some hopes for diversity, nursing is still not a very diverse industry. So I hope that this book inspires the next generation of nurses! More nurses that look like the world around us :)
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the publisher through Netgalley. All views expressed are only my honest opinion, a positive review was not required.

Most people have heard of Nightingale but in reality how many of us actually know details about her? I loved learning that she stuck to her fund and became a nurse despite family and societal judgement which is just amazing. It’s incredible how many people she saved - a true kindhearted selfless heroine. I was also astounded she used all the money from the queen to open a hospital - just wonderful. Lovely illustrations as always also.

A picture book biography of Florence Nightingale who revolutionized the world of nursing in her time.

A nice, succinct biography of the biggest nursing moments in Florence’s life and what influenced to get her into the world of nursing. There’s just a little more info about her in the back of the book along with a timeline of her life. The art style is cute. Hand this to kids looking for their first intro to Florence Nightingale or who love caring for others.

Notes on content [based on the ARC]: The Crimean war and injuries in it are mentioned but there are no gory details other than saying some were dying of sicknesses due to the poor condition of the place they were sent to recover from injuries. Illustrations do not show any blood or gross nursing situations.

I received an ARC of this title from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Any of the little people BIG DREAMS books are probably my favorite children’s books we own. My toddler loves to read stories of real people and these books are just beautiful. I was beyond excited to see that there would be one about Florence Nightingale! I am a Registered Nurse in the U.S. and a big time lover of the history and theory of the discipline of nursing. Florence Nightingale means so much and she still guides our practice today in nursing. The work she did truly began to define the essence of what nurses do and her story deserves to be told.

The greatest thing about these books is that they grow with the child. We started reading these when my daughter was just months old and the words and artwork captured her attention. As she gets older and understands more, it is just really special to share with her some of the great artists and people to have lived. I hope that in reading these beautiful books, seeds will be planted that inspire children to make their mark on the world in their own unique ways.

I will without a doubt be purchasing my daughters their own copy of little world BIG DREAMS Florence Nightingale. I am thrilled to be able to introduce them to nursing and to the ever inspiring lady with the lamp. I want to sincerely thank NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group – Frances Lincoln Children's Books for providing me an advanced release copy of this book to review.

I love this series, in fact my library just restock all book from this series. Our students love it so much. This book is suitable for early stage children. A Perfect book to introduce them about history without worry that they would get bored.

word by word that they use is easy to understand. This is actually a perfect book example about gender equality. I believe this book can give inspiration to the younger generation.
