Great book, so useful and will be really handy to have around.

Thanks so much to Netgalley and the publishers for letting me read an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I tried to get through this book multiple times but ultimately had a hard time with it. Perhaps it would have been helpful for me when I was starting as an author or if I wrote more fiction. I don't really need prompts or ideas like who my target audience is. This would be great for high school students who are first starting their writing journeys though, or others who are fresh to it all.

I am reviewing a copy of Inkslinger 2 Planning Your Amazing Book, through Night River Press and NetGalley:

Inkslinger 2 Planning Your Amazing Books takes the planning topics summarized in Inkslinger-99-Day Guided Writing Experience and expand on them. We dive deeper into the plotting and preparation required to craft a truly excellent book. We try not to put you to sleep with history or the boring details you get in classes; we provide practical knowledge to give you the confidence to write the book you've been wanting to write.

In Inkslinger 2 the authors teach you how to plan your book so that when you sit down to write it, you know exactly what you need to do to craft your story.

I give Inkslinger 2 4 out of five stars!

Happy Reading

Subtitle: Planning Your Amazing Book

I received an advance reader copy of this book from the publisher through Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.

Where the original Inkslinger was an ambitious guide to writing a 50,000 word novel in 99 days, Inkslinger 2 is concerned with how to plan a novel. It includes breakdowns of key decisions such as: target audience, genre, plot structure, outlining, point of view, and several other considerations.

I gave Inkslinger 2 four stars on Goodreads. It’s appeal is mainly in it’s ‘big picture’ point of view. I think newer writers would find it more useful that more experienced ones would. In fact, I wish I’d had access to a book like this back when I was starting out as a writer.

This is an engaging book, written in a friendly, chatty manner. As someone who loves reading books about writing, there wasn’t a lot here I didn’t already know but there were many times when I read something that made me pause and think. Sometimes the way something is presented can make you understand it better, and this book did a brilliant job of putting points across in a slightly different way to usual, which made it a pleasure to read.

There are links in the book to videos of the authors discussing the content and this is incredibly useful, especially if you prefer consuming video over text. The book contains a comprehensive look at the three act structure, which is really well explained, and the other topics in the book which include setting, post of view and character creation, are covered in a clear, easy to follow style. Overall, this is a great book for beginners to writing fiction, but I would recommend it to anyone who would like another perspective on common fiction-writing themes.

With thanks to Netgalley and Night River Press for providing a free review copy. All opinions are my own.

This is a great resource for writers. It’s a little below the level that I would find useful, but I can see it being incredibly helpful for authors who are just starting out or who needs some support to develop in their careers. There are a heap of multimedia goodies that readers can access alongside the book which will be great for those visual learners out there. Really good book. Well done.

Inkslinger 2 is a comprehensive guide that any wannabe writer should read. It is packed full of information on how to write - from characters to setting, and the writers of this book have provided a really helpful guide here.

I haven't read the first Inkslinger, but intend to now. The writing prompts at the end are also extremely handy for any writer who needs a hand.

Thanks to Finnian Burnett and Kimberly Cooper Griffin, NetGalley, and Night River Press for this copy.

I never read the original Inkslinger book—Inkslinger-99 Day GuidedWriting Experience—but I must say I’m impressed with Inkslinger 2: Planning Your Amazing Book. As the title suggests the focus of the book is on things that should often be considered before jumping into the wiring process: the importance of understanding your target audience, genre, plotting & outlining, understanding and picking the right POV, setting, and creating character sketches.

Having read many books on writing over the years, I can’t say there was anything new to me but I always enjoy reading different perspectives on writing, sometimes hearing the same information said in a different way will suddenly make something click. And I say hearing (not just reading) because Inkslinger 2 is actually somewhat multimedia. The authors provide links to a number of short videos in which you get a chance to hear them further discuss the various topics. The videos are definitely not a substitute for the book itself but rather a fun and informative bonus.

I’d like to thank Night River Press and NteGalley for the chance to read and review Inkslinger 2.

Inkslinger 2 is a well written, encouraging, and accessible guide with tips for outlining and planning fiction. Released 1st Feb 2022 by Night River Press, it's 256 pages and available in paperback and ebook formats. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links. I've really become enamored of ebooks with interactive formats lately.

Experienced author and writing workshop coordinators Kimberly Cooper Griffin and Finnian Burnett delineate a general procedure for planning and outlining in the context of written (mostly) fiction and other written forms. In this follow-up workshop, they cover how to figure out: target audience, genre, plot and outline, point of view, and writing character studies.

Salient points are listed succinctly, often in short bullet point lists. Important tips are provided in highlighted text boxes. The whole effect is streamlined and customizable to fit individual author's needs.

The entire book is useful - but for me the knockout value comes from the appendices included in the volume. They vary in range from exercises for building the framework and skeleton for a narrative arc which readers can build on and expand into a finished product, to 250 writing prompts (many of the lessons in the book invite readers to choose a prompt from this appendix), and blank worksheets to fill out which cover the themes in the book: target audience, genre, etc.

Four and a half stars. This would be a good choice for public or school library acquisition, writing workshops, classroom use, and of course for writers who want to improve their craft.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
