While I did like Ms Smith and her approach, somehow this book didn't really do it for me. I could have done without all those illustrations, and the dialogue between author and reader felt a tad cringe to me, but that's of course just me and my personal likes and dislikes, YMMV.

The book of overthinking talks about overthinking, how it harms us, and provides advice to get out of this phase. It is a useful self-help book that will make your life better.

Some days my overthinking is bad, sometimes it's nothing. But Ms. Smith helps us to learn how to cope and NOT overthink as severely as I do to myself. The thought virus concept is a good breakthrough for me, and reading it makes it more bearable. There is much information that can assist you in drawing up your own solution pathways. I appreciate any book that can help me help myself. I believe that identifying your own psyche in a book can bring about change, which this book did for me.

As a constant over thinker, so much of this book connected for me. I recommend to anyone that has struggled with anxiety, depression, or incessant worrying. The book is presented in a very straightforward, matter-of-fact manner. This book would work great alongside therapy

This was a surprisingly accessible overview of CBT strategies to deal with worrying and ruminating thoughts. It has a casual tone throughout, which I think made the content highly readable and easy to digest compared to other similar self-help books that read in a more technical way. If you’re not already very familiar with CBT, you could find some helpful information here.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.

This is a good introduction to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for those who are new to it. I also find it helpful to use a CBT app on my phone to really drive the lesson home. Thanks for letting me check it out!

This book provides so much data and biological insight in an easy-to-understand way. I really enjoyed reading this and learning more about why (and how) I overthink.

The Book of Overthinking is an oversimplified and comical approach to anxiety and overthinking. It briefly talks about things like positive vs. worrisome overthinking, or how our bodies respond with a Fight/Flight/Freeze reaction. It's also peppered with goofy little comics that don't do much to further the very basic self-help nature of this book.

This is a very short book that will be hit or miss with readers. Be aware there is a lot of cussing and attempts at humor, which I didn’t expect from a professional book. Those already familiar with CBT may get less out of it.

If ever there was a book made for be, it would definitely be this one. This book explains why we overthink and the difference between simply overthinking and worrisome overthinking.

Highly recommend to any anxiety ridden over thinkers.

Book review : The book of Over thinking by psychologist Gwendoline Smith is an incredible self help book.

Psychologist explains in clear and accessible language the concepts of positive and negative overthinking, the truth about worry, and how to deal with the "thought viruses" that are holding you back.

The author broke down the CBT theory (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) to explain just exactly what it is and how it works, and how the reader can adapt this to their own life. Plus adapting it into the ABC guide/table really helped in regard to noticing the thoughts, feelings, physical responses and behaviours, and how to use this table to adapt a new way of overcoming the negative responses is very helpful and different to any “self-help” book I have read previously.

The inclusion of the activities and flashcards towards the end of the book are really helpful too, I have found myself saving the “worry decision map” and have already used it a few times! Plus having the ABC templates as tools for any experience that I go through is fantastic. Either way this novel is a fantastic and insightful read that I am grateful to have the pleasure of reading and using.
Happy Reading!

I don't know if this is a clear review but what I felt reading this book was confusion and at the same time, it's so satisfying relatable. I don't usually talk about being overthink but this university experience put me into so many realizations. I tend to see it in a clearer picture whilst maintaining to romanticize it. Yes, I think there's a beauty of overthink; the pressure, your mind will travel, anticipation, and so much more to explore. As a solid procrastinator, this book slowly slaps me and put me into a good sleep. I love how this book overthinks itself.

The trials of overthinking

Humans naturally have a tendency to overthink, negativity bias that become ingrained in us as children when we learn how to survive. Ms. Smith addresses the challenge of overthinking getting in the way of our normal functioning.

The author explains overthinking in different ways but if you are seeking answers to stop over thinking, this book isn't the best answer.

However the book will help you understand what over thinking is and provide a few tips which are fairly practical. The format of the book is fairly easy to follow.

(Received an eARC of this book from the publisher on NetGalley in exchange for a review. All opinions are my own)

Thanks to Netgalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for the ARC and audio ARC of this!

This was a good introduction to CBT and how to use it for anxiety and overthinking. As a chronic overthinker, I think I need to hear this a million times until it sinks in 😂 I read it following The Book of Knowing and for such short books they do have quite a bit of overlap. I recommend this if you struggle with overthinking and want some clear tools in one place.

Helpful overview of overthinking/worrying. I felt this book did not go into great depth and was more of an elongated online article rather than a book. There were illustrations that were used as fillers and pages were very short with little copy on each page. The entire book took maybe 2 hours to read.

I'm not much of non-fiction reader but I was hoping to get an understanding the anxiety issues related to work and life that I experience every now and then.
This book clearly explain problems associated with negative overthinking and its effects on our life and mental health. The explanation is simple(without using complicated clinical terms) with lots of real-life daily situations as examples. I hope to try some of the suggestions mentioned in the book to see the practicality of it. A very good self help book.

Dr. Smith does a great job of describing the connection between thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. This book provides so much knowledge as well as ways to overcome overthinking. It is based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, an effective treatment.

I highly recommend this title for those who worry (like myself), for those who know a worrier and for those whose professional life involves counseling the worried. Everyone will benefit from reading this book.
