Slimy Oddity’s Today Will Be a Great Day!: Slimy Oddity’s Guide to Happiness is a positive and endearing book filled with simple but helpful affirmations and guidance. The timeless messages are applicable for all ages. The full-page colour illustrations are so bright and cool!

This short but helpful book is filled with uplifting and useful advice to help readers find happiness and fulfillment in their lives. We follow a cute little red blob named Slimy Oddity whose journey and interactions with other creatures help us to unlearn negative feelings, deal with uncomfortable situations, and instead practice mindful habits that allow us to achieve inner peace.

This book gently teaches many important and practical life lessons that are applicable to both younger ones and adults. For instance, we learn how to confront worrisome moments and instances of self-doubt while building self-confidence, practicing gratitude, and appreciating the present. I love that the book’s advice is simple, straightforward, and logical. Although a lot of the platitudes are very common sense, it’s always important and wonderful to have them reinforced because it is so easy to forget to be kind to yourself. I also appreciate that the writing isn’t preachy or saccharine but is instead genuine and uplifting.

I love the quirky, fun, and colourful artwork! It’s very unique and interesting. I love how full of personality the little blob creatures are. Everything is so happy and friendly that I had a permanent smile on my face as I read! I also like the heavy use of black backgrounds which really make the colours (and messages!) pop.

Today Will Be a Great Day!: Slimy Oddity’s Guide to Happiness is a genuine, uplifting, and lovely book that will help readers find peace and contentment in their daily lives. The affirmations and advice are applicable to all ages but I think that older children and adults will be more receptive to these messages.

This is a great little book for when you’re feeling anxious. It’s filled with positive affirmations, ideas for wellbeing, and great little illustrations throughout. The language is very simple, and, easy to read / understand. I think this is really important when reading at a difficult time, when your head can’t cope with heavy jargon. This book has helpful, practical ideas that can be tried straight away. It’s a helping hand during difficult times, and develops good habits to help when you need them most - brilliant.

*I do not recommend this book for children under the age of 18. The publisher says "Baby and up."

This book contains a lot of good messages and quotes, encouraging awareness and positivity.

However, there are some platitudes, and a few disturbing situations.

No matter how flowery the pages are, watching Slimy the little red gumdrop-shaped person float around, the "intervention" scenes can be dark and shocking. A purple gumdrop person tells Slimy what he's doing wrong and how he should do it. ...Just after a panel tells us that we don't need to change anything, we're perfect the way we are.

While I completely believe in some of the encouragement and good things said, I'm bothered by the starry-sparkle-rainbow-flowers that make it all too sweet.

This book is certainly not for children.

Serious subjects should be discussed in a realistic way, making sure that children are mature enough to understand the concepts and the complexity of depression and other issues raised by the "unhappy" parts of the book.

Children can feel when they--or a family member--is not perfect.

Mixing interventions up with stars and hearts that say "You're perfect." will not fool children into thinking everything is okay. They know when they're being lied to. It only develops mistrust.

Everyone can improve. What the page probably meant to say is;

"You are a valuable and important person. Nobody is perfect. You don't need to be perfect to deserve love."

Unfortunately, none of the pages say this. And it's the most important message the book should have displayed over and over.

The more murky messages are that success doesn't equal happiness, if something is impossible, you should do it anyway, and happiness means being in complete harmony with what is. Among others. On the surface they seem fine until you apply them to real life.

I would provisionally recommend this book to adults who would benefit from reminders in particular areas, with the understanding that not everything printed in it should be swallowed whole. And that people with genuine challenges should get professional help.

Reminders like 1) how to alter negative thought patterns, 2) reasons to be grateful, 3) how to maintain good relationships, 4) worrying doesn't help, etc.

2/5 Stars

I strongly suggest that a panel of psychologists review this book before it is sold (especially to or for children.)

Thanks to Wide Eyed Editions and NetGalley for the free preview of this ebook pdf; the review is voluntary.

This illustrated guidebook is marketed as being for kids but I think all adults could do with it too! How often have we felt bogged down by past regrets, plagued by negative thoughts, or felt stuck in a rut?

Filled with cute blob characters, vibrant artwork and uplifting affirmations, this will put a smile on your face and feels like a warm hug. If books were pastries, this one would be a unicorn cake sprinkled with rainbow Smarties.

I cannot even begin to describe how much I love the art of this book. It is so fun and whimsical and funky--it reminds me of the art I used to draw as a kid onto black sketchbook pages with vibrant gel pens. The affirmations on the pages make it all the better and I found myself pausing after each page to let the message settle in. The world always needs more positivity and this definitely hits the mark. A wonderful book to share with anyone.

Today Will Be a Great Day by Slimy Oddity is, as it tells you on the first page, a “guide to happiness. It is essentially a simplified self-help book about forgiving yourself and being grateful for all the good you have in your life.

The art in this book was very cute. I feel it worked very well with the messages the book wished to convey. I also liked the color palette. My favorite quote was “Success does not equal happiness” which is my favorite page. I simply enjoyed the art.

The picture that says a thousand words is one that sheds a light on the parts of ourselves which are, oftentimes, more difficult to put into words. In this short book filled with wonderful illustrations by the author, the reader works their way through key phrases that seek to nestle themselves in those parts of ourselves that could benefit from a bit of kindness.

The main character of this picture book, one that adopts the soft & warm characteristics a person can love; Slimy finds themselves in situations that every reader might have as well. How do we begin to work past negative thought patterns? What if the mistakes we made, in ignorance or with intent, cannot be looked past? What if we are not enough?

As one looks at this tiny red blob, one that has good intentions & tries its best, the reader acknowledges that these feelings & thoughts do transpire in the minds of those around them as well; it is good to be reminded that the human experience, howsoever singular it may appear, does not render one isolated in their encounters.

This is not a book that I would encourage you to fly through & I very much doubt that any reader would hold a desire to speed forth towards the end. The feelings evoked whereupon Slimy is reminded of their worth, leaves one with sentiments of contentment & sympathy. It was difficult for me to motivate myself to finish this short story because I did not want to leave behind the ethereal colour schemes & patterns, delightfully evoked across the pages of Slimy’s adventures.

This is a book that will do well to have its place in the library of all. Reminders to be kind, patient, gentle & loving towards our own person are priceless & we would do well to remain steadfast in our admonition of them.

Thank you to NetGalley, Quarto Publishing Group – Wide Eyed Editions & Slimy Oddity for the free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
