Right from the very first chapter, I knew that I will not get along with the writing style of this book. However, as it is a novella that can be enjoyed in one sitting if desired, I persevered and until the end.

To briefly sum up the story, we follow Maria, a poet and a literature professor who gets a unique opportunity to write a biography of her recently deceased colleague - the eccentric and mysterious queen of horror fiction - Edwina Frost. It proves to be an uneasy task for Maria, as she has to navigate her search for the true Edwina among numerous well-kept secrets that could ruin the reputation of the whole family. After the police uncovers a remains of a young child on Edwina’s property, her research gets even more intriguing as it points to a secret that was meant to stay buried.

Honestly, it doesn’t sound like a bad story idea at all. Edwina Frost as a character and mystery all-in-one had a potential to be great if it was handled better. Firstly, we have a terribly annoying narrator Maria who tries to be interesting but just simply isn’t. She just gets more and more convenient skills as the plot unfolds. Goes to Spain? Speaks fluent Spanish for no reason. Gets to write about a dead author? Yeah, she can see ghosts sometimes, no big deal. Needs a bit more poetic inspiration? Of course, Maria can talk to famous dead authors (as they are ghosts too) and they gladly explain her their work if needed (this idea would have been good enough on it’s own if it wasn’t just randomly mentioned a couple of times with on follow up). It just doesn’t add up. Secondly, the story itself is rushed and would deserve more elaboration and suspense. It feels like a rollercoaster ride in a horror house, with a mysterious story for a somewhat spooky atmosphere and one wonky jasmine smelling ghost that tries to save it. Unfortunately, you are more likely to be just looking for it to end so you can try a different ride instead.

Overall, I don’t think it is very good and as there are so many better ghost/mystery/horror stories, I recommend skipping this one.

Starting off by saying that what grabbed my attention was the name Edwina. To me it's a rare name, however I grew up with it and heard it daily because it was my mothers name. After reading the synopsis, I had to read it!

Edwina Frost, an author of horror stories, passes away and for political population, her nephew Hugh, wants a biography about her written. He locates and asks writer Maria Pell if she would please do so and Maria accepts. Maria starts researching Edwina and wile doing so she thinks she's constantly feeling Edwina's there with her. Once she learns a few things of Edwina, the family wants the book stopped. But there's a contract and Maria is in too deep and is struggling to let it go, or be known.

For being such a short book, it is very suspenseful and has a lot of punch in it!

Thank you NetGalley and Push On Press for allowing me to read this. for an honest review.

This is the second book I have read by this author and I was again not disappointed. This book was quite dark in plot and this was also reflected in the sometimes almost gothic style. A strong ghost story with a taste of romance,

This book brought me into it right from the very beginning with a well written plot and very intriguing characters. The mystery and suspense built into the story took me for a rollercoaster ride. I will be looking for more books to read by this author. I voluntarily reviewed an advance readers copy of this book.

I am generally a huge fan of all things vaguely paranormal, but this one didn’t quite check all the boxes for me. It read more like a study of a woman’s descent into jealousy and madness, with more focus on her romance than on the ghost who was haunting her.

I did not care for the protagonist and found her to be desperate and immature. For a university professor in her 40s, she should have had more self-possession and confidence than what was portrayed here. Then again, that could be my personal bias for strong female leads coming into play.

However, it was well written and easy to read, so it gains points for that. Thank you, Net Galley.

The Untold Story of Edwina was a very suspenseful read. I enjoyed wanting to know what would happen next and how it would end. This was a ghost story but mainly a mystery as Maria is asked to write the truth about Edwina by Edwina's nephew since she had an unfortunate passing. For a short story, I was very pulled by it.

When Edwin Frost, famous horror writer, dies, her family asks her colleague, Maria, to write her biography. They are concerned that there may be things in Edwin’s past that are best kept a secret and hope that Maria will use discretion in writing the biography.

Around the time of Edwina’s death, a child’s body is discovered on her property. Maria suspects there is a connection between Edwina and the child.

It’s an interesting story, but the book felt rushed. It was a lot to pack into a shorter story.

Also, I understand why it’s labeled as “horror” but the horror aspects seemed a bit random. It felt more thriller to me outside of the aspects with Edwina’s spirit.

Overall, the story is decent but not quite for me.

After popular horror fiction author, Edwina Frost, dies a lonely death in her farmhouse cellar, her politician nephew asks poet Maria Pell to write Edwina’s biography.
He hints that there are episodes in Edwina’s life that will require sensitive treatment. When the bones of a child are found on Frost farmland, Maria intuits a connection between the child and Edwina. Maria can feel that Edwina’s soul has not gone on to a sweet reward, but instead roams the earth as a troubled spirit.
As Maria closes in on the child’s identity, Edwina’s spirit becomes malevolent, threatening to claim Maria who fights back in a fierce battle to maintain her sanity. Fabulous story I just couldn’t put down!

Not my usual type obviously I didn’t read the blurb properly never the less I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.A really dark and mysterious ghost story delving into the past, with a little romance thrown in which adds further interest a must read for anyone into ghost stories.

I liked this book. I think a different cover would be more better but that's literally my only criticism. It's a quick read (at least for me). It's the type of book that is fun to read in one go.
