I have had Typecast on my TBR list for a few months and after a very hectic summer, I finally got around to reading it, and boy was it worth the wait! From the very beginning, I was invested in Callie and her life, what had gone before and what was to come. Set over two main timelines, before the break-up with college boyfriend Ethan and present day where Callie is now a preschool teacher and living in the house she grew up in.

Typecast was a delight to read, all the characters were loveable in their own way and I especially had a soft spot for Callie’s niece, four-year-old Zoe who was just so cute when she realised she’d get to share a bedroom with her Auntie Callie for a few months.

Callie finds herself with a lot to contend with, her sister and her family coming to stay for a while, the discovery that Ethan is the screenwriter for a movie that just may or may not be based on what happened when Callie dumped him and finding out what she actually wants to do with her life.

I can imagine Typecast being made into a movie and what an entertaining and funny movie it would be. In the meantime, if you enjoy women’s contemporary fiction and want something easy to read as Christmas approaches, grab yourself a copy of Typecast. Andrea Stein obviously has an amazing talent for writing and I hope she brings out another book soon.

Thank you to the author for my gifted copy in exchange for a review.

This has been on my NetGalley shelf for over a year, and I still haven’t picked it up. I've tried, but it just isn't for me (right now). I hope other people enjoy it more than I did.

Callie has been stuck in her life for the past ten years ever since she broke up with her college boyfriend Ethan after graduation. She then finds out that Ethan has written a script that she is featured in that is going to be released as a movie that will force her to reexamine her past.

I loved this book! I enjoyed how it went back and forth between the past and present and that the main focus was really Callie and how she grows as a person.

The only thing that is a bit misleading is the book didn’t go into much about the movie - but it still worked for me.

Callie's ex-boyfriend from college has just written a blockbuster movie about their break-up and now she's questioning her life since him, ten years ago. Did she make a mistake breaking up with him then?

Callie is now living in her vacant childhood house and hasn't had much luck in the relationship department lately, feeling like her life is at a stand still. I enjoyed the secondary characters a lot - an adorable niece, a feisty pregnant sister and a grumpy brother-in-law who just moved in while their home is under renovations...also cue in handsome architect!!

From the cover I thought this would be more of a rom-com, but it's definitely more woman's fiction/family drama. I really enjoyed seeing Callie grow throughout this book!

This book was a great surprise! the writing style hooked me right off the bats, and I looked forward to getting back to the story. There were many relatable parts (family dynamics, reliving a bad breakup, etc.) and I was excited for Callie to find her way. As always, I love a dual timeline, and Andrea Stein's novel used it very well. Definitely pick up this book for your next read.!

When I first requested this book I was intrigued by the title and description. Overall it was a good book, for me it is a 3/5 stars. The book had an interesting main character, who was very obviously white, that was going through an early 30s millennial style crisis- her college boyfriend wrote a screenplay seemingly about her and the movie was coming out soon making her confront her past relationship and her current life situations. The main character was witty, had an interesting life, and a very weird dynamic with her family. The book got bonus points for her not ending up with her ex in the end, and instead introducing a new love interest. However, Ben, the love interest, was the only redeeming character in the whole book for me, I think this book should come with a trigger warning for cheating, miscarriage/abortion, and depression. While it made for a good backstory it was painful to read about her young adult choices and the way she blamed a lot of her lack of communication on her trauma. To be honest, a lot of of could’ve been avoided if she had been able to have confrontations with people in her past. Also, she admitted to cheating more than 10 years after it happened, but refused to disclose a miscarriage with her former partner ( her body her choice, but also maybe let him know?) i felt like I’m the end things magically got fixed for her and it was all underwhelming based on how much she overthought everything. Maybe that’s real life but to me it felt a little bland story telling. So yeah not a bad book, but not in my favorites,

4 Stars!

I am always a sucker for a dual timeline book.

Callie broke up with her college boyfriend, her first love, 10 years ago. The reasoning is unknown to those in her life and it's a bit of a mystery to the reader throughout the book.

Callie is living in her childhood hometown and works as a preschool teacher. She loves her job but her life is missing that special someone. Next thing she knows, she finds out her ex is making a movie, and it seems to be about their relationship, most specifically the breakup.

What follows is a view of then, from the beginning of their relationship, to now, as Callie nears the release of the movie. The past chapters read like a perfect YA romance/coming of age, whereas the new chapters were very fitting of women's fiction. It was impressive to see an author write dual genres so well in the same book.

It's a book of first love and the journey after it ends, leading you to the place you were meant to be

Really liked this one. It was so much more than just a romcom, and really followed Callie's journey through romance, love, and family.

I was hooked from the very beginning and couldn’t put it down. I just needed to know what would happen & how everything was going to play out for our main character, Callie. The premise was very unique and is what absolutely got me. Callie’s ex-boyfriend writes a screenplay about their breakup. Not only is the upcoming movie is getting too much attention but Callie is being portrayed in a negative way. The last thing Callie needs is a reminder of how shitty is her ex is and just wants to move forward (especially in her love life).

Although this is women’s fiction, there is some romance and a second chance at love for Callie. There’s a lot of personal growth & development with Callie and you really get to see her journey. The dual-timeline gives you a great insight into her past and her present (which I loved).

Callie, is one of the best, most brilliantly developed characters I’ve had the pleasure of reading about this year, her story is so unique and captivating that I don’t think it will ever leave me. Just phenomenal! A true gem!

A delight to read! I love stories that are complex, heartfelt, and feature positive family interactions even if there's some relations to work the kinks out in. This had just the right blend of everything. I also appreciated that the main character taught preschool because we rarely see teachers and novels and that was touch from being a teacher myself.

A solid 3.5 stars!

I enjoyed Callie's family, job, and friends. These bonds were touching and had a lasting effect on me. Speaking of relationships, this is an excellent character driven story with a cast that melts your heart.

Who wouldn't love a workaholic sister, supporting parents, loud nice, amazing best friend and all those students brining so much color into the story. I was initially apprehensive about Nina, but as we find out later, she is as much of a real mix as a true sister can be. Personally, the children were my favorite. The time to time entry of Callie's students and niece instantly changes the mood. I think that does reflect a lot upon Stein's knowledge of children.

What I didn't like was the slow, dragging pace. The suspense goes on over 80% I believe, and though it was not unsatisfactory, I didn't like being made to wait. As a reader, I knew from the start that there would be a reveal, but I don't think it was worth it.

Typecast comprises the great elements of a humorous family drama, with negligible minuses.

Something I'd like skim through once in a while. Recommended as a cozy read.

Thank you to Girl Friday Productions and NetGalley for an e-ARC of this novel in exchange for a review.

Thanks to Girl Friday Books, Netgalley and the author for an ARC - I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This was such a fun read - I kept smiling the whole way through. I loved the characters and their relationships with each other, especially the interesting relationship between Callie and Nina, which I found so believable and relatable that I called my sister straight after reading this to recommend it.

I also absolutely adored Tess.

I think this is a book about women primarily and about their relationships with themselves and each other. While the romance aspect wasn't strong, I still really enjoyed the book and didn't feel the lack of romance in the storyline.

I great read.

Okay, so the thing is the premise of this book is very very interesting. Like I really wanted to like it, but there were some jokes that I did not like and it just threw me off and I really don't want to pick it back up again.

Thank you NetGalley for the e-arc of this book.
