This book is incredibly weird with little to no plot or vibes. Probably wouldn’t recommend. This may be ok for people looking for something quick and easy.

This was not the book for me, I did not enjoy the writing style or the characters, I also felt like there was way too much smut in this and a lot of it was not needed, I felt it added nothing towards the plot and some part was a bit creepy and disturbing. The premise was interesting if the book actually relied more on the sci-fi fantasy area and gave the characters more depth but this did not work.

I requested this book because it’s description appealed to me. I also really liked the cover art. Unfortunately I became very ill shortly after my request was approved and I was not able to read it. I therefore can not rate it fairly. I need to give it stars though in order to review it. Thank you to NetGalley for the arc!

The premise of this book is really fascinating, and it would have been, had there been more character development, relationship development and scientific focus. Instead, the story is focused on the characters fascination with himself and his "role" to repopulate a world. It becomes repetitive and boring, and issues dealing with incest are disturbing. Surely there is another way to explain cultural (even inter dimensional) differences. IT felt very self-serving, wish fulfillment style, which was a shame, because the base idea was very interesting.

Thank you so much for the opportunity to read the Chromosome Quest.

This book is one wild ride, that unfortunately didn’t always work. I knew almost from the start I am not the target audience. Most readers love smut in their novels, but there’s an art to it, and a limit. This made me think of Ice Planet Barbarians but the male version, which isn’t a bad comparison, but I’m sure that’s not what the author was aiming at.

I honestly craved more plot and science while reading the Chromosome Quest.

But there is potential, and I don’t regret reading this book.

Once again thank you.

Unfortunately this book was not for me. I personally did not like the writing style as I felt that there was a lot of talking and some description missing. There was also a lot of moments that seemed to be building to something eventful and then nothing much happened which made it disappointing.

I also didn't like the way that the characters interacted it felt as though there was a emotional connection between them lacking.<spoiler> I also strongly disliked the Athena, Fitz and Petchy dynamic. Not just the relationship in the book but there was no fatherly-ness from Petchy. And ignoring options on Athena/Fitz they just didn't have the right connection for a relationship.</spoiler>

Then the ending was a disappointment. I've given this 2 stars as the overall premise of the book and general plot line was worthy of a star.

This book is quite unique and adventurous! I was a little thrown off at first because there were blatant taboos such as incest and sexual relations with minors, but the way it was explained, and the character interactions ALMOST made the taboos nonexistent. I found over 23 new-to-me words, which was exciting because the author really emphasized the importance of using a thesaurus in writing to excel the story's depth.

In my notes, I stated that a paragraph is repeated approximately 13.6% of the way into the book. There are tones that remind me of Alice in Wonderland, and Goldilocks and the Three Bears. This story is essentially a race to save humanity, but I don't know if we will ever get the answers we need.

This was a disappointment. I imagine some young men might enjoy it, a “nerd” transformed into a “hero”, with the freedom to have has much sex as he can handle. Not my cup of tea.

A strange call to save humanity leads one man on an adventure of a lifetime in Nathan Gregory’s Chromosome Quest: A Hero’s Quest Against the Singularity.

Fitz’s life was average and underwhelming as he continually searched for a new job to put his computer skills, or any for that matter, to work. When an unusual job advert keeps appearing before him, he curiously follows the advert’s instructions and gets recruited for a mysterious job and provided very few details other than he should be willing to leave his life behind for many months. As the first part of the job that the man, Petchy, recruited him for begins, Fitz undergoes physical training on a planet with a civilization whose technology is stone age and filled with a declining population of mostly female fur-covered humans with few inhibitions. Part of this training includes copulating with the child-bearing aged females of the planet to help prevent their total societal collapse and Fitz, though initially reluctant due to the young age of some of them, is happy to comply once he learns that his social taboos are not theirs. When his physical training wraps up, Athena, or Teena as she prefers, joins Petchy and Fitz for the next leg of the mission, by evading dinosaurs to reach to the correct portal, for their attempt to defeat a malicious Artificial Intelligence that threatens the future of humanity.

In an adventure-focused narrative featuring a quest of an odd nature and mysterious circumstance, the story filled with aliens, dinosaurs, and AI begins to unfold with moments of humor and nerdy references. The storytelling style oscillates between “I’ll tell you later,” withholding basic information to keep things mysterious, and info-dumping; it got to be rather heavy on the info-dumping, particularly with the full introduction to Athena, as the mission is then explained in greater detail. Though ridiculous in nature and met with a humor-laden perspective, there was a rather cavalier tone to the reproductive duties undertaken by Fitz throughout the journey, and it became quite repetitive as the mission progressed, making it feel rather unnecessary to keep mentioning his efforts in that arena, especially as commentary presented as juvenile. As tends to be common with science fiction narratives, there was a discussion around various social constructs to spark further consideration of the topic, and in this instance it centered around taboos, and namely those of age of the participants and incest, or more accurately, how it applied for this specific genetic line. Concluding this portion as a memoir of the adventure had to date, there is no firm understanding of the mission’s ultimate results, likely hoping to reader pique interest for what might yet come in later adventures in the series.

Overall, I’d give it a 3 out of 5 stars.

Fitz is an out of work cyber security expert. Having a cup of coffee in NYC he noticed a beautiful redhead running naked through the streets. He applies for a strange job and ends up on another world battling dinosaurs and robots. This is the first book but Gregory in the Chromosome Series. I look forward to the sequel.

This is the first time I have every given a one star and don’t do so lightly, but the book in my opinion deserves no stars. I requested this book based on cover and description expecting an entertaining fantasy novel. I was disappointed that these didn’t match the written text. The book starts well, then everything is downhill. The story stagnates, the text is very repetitive. But worst of all is the subject matter. There are places to have a philosophical discussion about reproductive age, fertility and incest. But not in a book that gives no indication that this will be the major basis of text. Definitely not one for me. I was given an ARC for an freely given honest review. This that.

The're's potential and the first part is interesting. Unfortunately the story didn't keep my attention and fell flat.
Not my cup of tea
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine

I had to DNF this book, though I did try many times to finish reading it.

The Good, it is well written and it has an interesting premise. There is the “waking up on an alien planet” trope (done well) which I really enjoy, especially in LitRPG’s which this is not, but in many ways it did remind me of how many of them start out.

Why I could not finish it, upon waking up on the alien planet, the MC is almost immediately pawed at (literally, because cat girl) by someone they refer to consistently as a child, referred to as Lolita. Then we are told that in this world, essentially, the age of consent is much younger, so it’s ok and he should definitely mount her, in fact it would be rude and wrong not to as they are experiencing repopulation issues. As a woman, and a mother, this just didn’t sit well with me. I wouldn’t have minded how pornographic the novel got (I am a fan of smut, when all of the participants are consenting adults) but under the circumstances I just could not keep reading this.

I am certain there is an audience for this book, but it is not me.

Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an advance review copy for free, I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I did also submit a review for this on Amazon, though it takes a few days for them to approve them. It will show up there as soon as they do.

I really enjoyed this story - the interesting world, and the things these characters have to contend with and work through. I was worried for a bit there! Looking forward to reading the next adventure!.

Did not finish- got to the pet where he fights against getting a semi from a young girl - stopped. Major no-no and I will not be reading any more. Didn’t really understand what the creatures were if they were humans with fur the description is terrible then to turn the page and read about a young girl and him fighting his loins. Ya, this book is already so far out there then add this and it was not enough to keep my attention of interest.

I had mixed feelings about this book. The first half of the book had some clever wording and good foreshadowing. And while it was thoughtful in places, it also came across as an adolescent male’s fantasy. In addition, it also ignored some currently accepted science, instead of addressing it. The second half of the book had much better storytelling and was well-paced. But throughout the book, I did not feel that the main protagonist was a likable character. In addition, there was little humor in the book. I rate the first half of the book 2 stars and the second half 4 stars, hence the overall 3-star rating. Thank you to Netgalley and BooksGoSocial for the advance reader copy.

What a brilliant, in a way, topical, book. Out of this world - literally! A very good story that made me laugh- and think of life. I found myself nodding to some of the conclusions.

Loved it, can't wait for the next in the series.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher I read a free advance review copy of the book. This review is voluntary, honest and my own opinion.

I got about 50% through before I had to give up, this really did feel like it was a written by a teenage boy and not in a good way. It was like some awful wet dream about being a saviour, whilst having lots of sex (for a good cause) and working out. It was boring and not at all funny,
