Domestic drama and a mystery with a touch of the supernatural.
Most thrillers or mysteries start with secrets and lies. Many end with revelations that show exactly why things turned out as they did. This is the same.
Pippa and Gabe Gerard live in their dream home on a cliff of a coastal town. Unfortunately, the cliff is a draw for those wanting to commit suicide by jumping off the edge. Gabe has become somewhat of a legend for talking them away from the ledge. Except for this time. A woman falls to her death. Turns out that this woman was no stranger to Gabe or Pippa. Did she fall or really jump, or was she pushed? Surely Gabe, Pippa's fantastically gorgeous and soulmate of a husband, didn't lie about what happened out there...
This was OK but not as compelling or thrilling as I had hoped. A couple of twists, sure, but it all boils down to some weirdness with this couple -- the biggest which is the mental illness angle. I never really liked any of the characters, and what I expected to happen, happened. An odd note that really jarred was the narration from the point of view of the dead woman. While that little trick works in some great novels (The Lovely Bones), it really didn't work for me here. The time shifts of then and now also disrupt the flow of the story a bit. And the conclusion seemed rushed and sort of a letdown after all the buildup, plus not really believable. Moral of this and every story - stop lying.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for this e-book ARC to read and review.

The Soulmate is a twisty, domestic thriller with unexpected moments. Every couple has their secrets, but is the husband telling the truth? What really happened that night on the cliff when the woman fell? And is it really the husband hiding a secret or the wife who is too afraid for the truth to come out?
I could not put this book down. With a minimal amount of characters, the focus is entirely on what a couple will do for each other, for their soulmate, in order to keep their seemingly normal lives intact. A quick read with different twists than one expects from a psychological thriller.

I was hooked for the first half of this one. I couldn’t put it down and couldn’t want to see what happened next! However, I feel like it fell off after the halfway point.
I liked the premise of this one, with Pippa and Gabe living in a house that backs up to The Drop, a cliff turned popular suicide spot.
The “twist” wasn’t super surprising but I did like the characters.

This book was hard to put down once I started reading it. The book jumps back and forth between the present and the past. To get the full picture of the story you need it to do that. Take everything you think you know and flip it. This book will keep you guessing.

The Soulmate was a very anticipated read for me and I loved the premise! The author did a great job with character development and I loved the multi POVs and short chapters! The husband is so chaotic which is a nice change in pace from the crazy wife trope in thrillers.
I was so excited when I saw Sally Hepworth was coming out with a new novel because I really enjoyed The Good Sister and want to read quite a few of her others! However, The Soulmate did leave me wanting a bit more by the end and I didn’t find myself wanting to pick it up and fly through it while I was reading it.
I have seen quite a few amazing reviews for this one and I do think you should give it a chance if you like Sally Hepworth’s other books!

This is my review of The Soulmate.
Gabe & Pippa have found their dream home, a cottage on a cliff in their coastal Australian town. But soon they discover that their perfect home hides secrets...tall cliffs that have become a popular spot for people to end their lives. Night after night, Gabe manages to come to the rescue of these souls.... coaching them off the ledge until one time he does not.
Pippa was a woman who loved her husband, and put up with more than she should have for the sake of the marriage and her children.
When Pippa discovers Gabe knew the victim, Pippa questions if the victim jumped or was, she pushed?
Pippa tells Gabe that she saw him, through the window, right after the woman jumped, holding his hands out.
Has Pippa's perfect life, with her soulmate, been nothing but a lie?
Then the deepest and darkest secrets begin to unravel.
This novel alternates between two POVs including Pippa (NOW & THEN) and Amanda, the dead woman (BEFORE & AFTER). Their perspectives provide us with enough information about secrets and lies they kept about their marriages.
This fast paced, character driven novel was a very enjoyable read. The author addressed the issue of mental illness and how this illness affects the people who care for them.
Many thanks to St. Martin's Press, New York for my digital copy.

When I first started, the titles on the chapters confused me for a bit. I finally caught on as I realized when I was able to get the storyline going. It was interesting how the spirit of a deceased woman was telling her version switching back and forth from present to past.
There are four main characters involved but only two women are the storytellers of this novel. All the characters were interesting. Has you guessing what’s the motive, or was it murder, suicidal, and etc. There may be some that may be triggering subjects for some readers such as, mental health, marriages on the rocks, affairs, and some violences.
Very entertaining, had me guessing for a while, and a quick read for thriller/suspense. However, I just couldn’t connect well like I wanted to with one couple who’s dealing with a certain mental illness. That’s where I was disappointed because one of my relatives has it and I have been dealing with it.
I’d give it a three stars because of that and I know it wouldn’t be that memorable for me down the road.

The Soulmate's setting of Portsea, a coastal Australian town, is one of beauty but also danger and death. Pippa and her husband, Gabe, live in a cliffside house on the tip if Mornington Peninsula. Unfortunately, several people have jumped to their deaths off of the steep cliffs.
Hepworth's suspenseful plot opens with yet another death off of the cliffs, with twists and turns slowly revealing the circumstances and reason. The points of view of Pippa, as well as the dead woman, Amanda, are given in alternating timelines of past and present. Full of secrets, love, and domestic drama, this book sensitively covers the bonds of two marriages and the difficult topic of mental illness.
Hepworth knows how to keep me glued to a story, with tension building in slow burn style throughout.
The cliffside scenes were atmospheric and chilling. After reading two of Hepworth's books, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend her to fans of mystery and thrills.
Thank you to Net Galley and St. Martin's Press for an advance reader's copy of this book. My review is my own.

I’m not going to lie. I was really disappointed in Sally Hepworth’s last book, 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘠𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘳 𝘞𝘪𝘧𝘦, but I’m happy to say she has redeemed herself with 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗦𝗢𝗨𝗟𝗠𝗔𝗧𝗘. While last year’s domestic thriller had a lot of victim blaming and gaslighting of its female characters, 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘦 has plenty of blame to go around in the crumbling marriage of Pippa and Gabe.
The story opens as they both witness a suicide off the cliff near their backyard. Tragedy becomes more complicated when the two discover the victim was a woman known to them both. And, that’s only the start of the secrets they keep.
Like most of Hepworth's books, I listened to this one on audio. As always, the narration by Barrie Kreinik and Jessica Douglas-Henry was excellent. They were so easy to listen to and really brought the story to life even the parts that were a little eye-roll-worthy. Yes, there were some, especially around some of Pippa’s choices, but then isn’t that what we expect in a domestic thriller? If all the characters were perfectly logical, where would be the fun in that? 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘦 was a fun book, one that would be a perfect beach bag read…or listen. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Gabe and Pippa have their dream home on a cliff in a coastal town. This cottage is known as “The Drop”, where many people go to end their lives. Gabe spends night after night talking strangers off the edge, until one night. When Pippa learns that Gabe knew the victim, she starts to wonder whether the victim jumped on her own or if she was pushed. Now Pippa is stuck wondering whether her soulmate would lie. What other secrets have been hiding within their marriage?
Sally Hepworth has done it again. The Soulmate is a thrilling domestic suspense novel about marriage and secrets. What sort of betrayal could push your soulmate over the edge? Told from two perspectives and over different timelines, this novel will keep you engaged and wondering what happened. Hepworth’s writing style is captivating and the plot twists will keep you guessing.
Thank you to NetGalley and St.Martin’s Press for the ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC! I’ve loved all the stories by Sally Hepworth that I’ve read so far and was looking forward to this one. The premise here centers around Pippa and Gabe, a couple who live with their two children near a well known suicide spot. Gabe has acquired somewhat of a hero status due to his efforts in talking people down from the spot. However, one day, a person still jumps despite his efforts. It looks like things are not what they seem. The book is told from the POVs of Pippa and the victim, and jumps seamlessly between the past and present. What I really liked was that I could not tell what direction the story was going in - I had to keep reading to find out more. You slowly learn about the main characters’ pasts - there’s also a few misdirections! However, the ending seemed a let down after the build up. The other thing was that none of the characters were really that likeable, so you’re not that bothered about their fates.
Overall, a fast, twisty read and one to get you out of a reading slump!

To be totally honest, I was expecting a better twist for this one. Sally Hepworth novels are often ones with a shocking turn at the very end. And while this one has one, I found that it just didn’t catch my interest and wasn’t that surprising to me. The writing is as usual excellent from this author, and the story is a slow burn. While this book didn’t totally engross me like I was expecting, this book is still worth the read/listen for other Sally Hepworth fans!
A big thank you to NetGalley, St Martin’s Press, and Sally Hepworth for providing me with this gifted copy in exchange for my honest review.

Thank you, NetGalley and the Publisher for the eARC! If Sally Hepworth wrote it, I’ll be sure to read it and The Soulmate did not disappoint!
The Soulmate is an easy to read story and the short chapters made it easy to read just one more chapter. The Soulmate hooks you from the beginning and keeps your interest throughout the entire story.
Another great read from Sally Hepworth!

Another hit from Sally Hepworth! This is a gripping domestic thriller with some great twists. Talk about tangled webs! This book has them in abundance. Don't pass this one up if you enjoy nail biting suspense.

This is a captivating novel that delves into the complexities of marriage, betrayal, and the secrets that can tear us apart. With a stunning setting on a cliffside cottage in a sleepy coastal town, Sally Hepworth weaves a tale that is both engaging and sinister.
The story centers around Pippa and Gabe, whose dream home hides a dark secret. The cliffs around their home have become a popular spot for people to end their lives, and Gabe has been the one to talk them off the ledge. But when one victim is someone he knew, Pippa begins to question everything. Was the victim pushed, or did she jump? And is Gabe, the love of her life and soulmate, lying to her? I was hooked from the first chapter, and the book just kept getting better after.
The novel is written in alternating perspectives, and each chapter provides a deeper understanding of the characters and their motivations. The story moves at a steady pace, with the tension building as the secrets unravel. Hepworth expertly crafts a tale that keeps the reader engaged from beginning to end. I must say that this author has become one of my favorite thriller authors, and she delivers every single time. The Soulmate might be my favorite book by her as of now.
The characters are well-developed, flawed, and relatable. Pippa is a strong and independent woman who is forced to confront her own beliefs about her marriage and herself. Gabe is a complicated character, and his actions and motivations are revealed gradually, adding to the suspense and intrigue of the story. I truly enjoyed how Hepworth delves into Gabe's mental health history which explains so many of his behaviors. I also thought it was very clever to add the POV of the victim although I was a little bit confused about the perspective at first. It only becomes clear after a few chapters in that she is narrating the present events so I was somewhat confused at first.
Overall, The Soulmate is a compelling and thought-provoking novel that will keep readers guessing until the very end. With beautiful prose, complex characters, and a stunning setting, Sally Hepworth has created a masterpiece that is not to be missed. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a gripping, character-driven story with a touch of mystery and suspense.

Wow, wow, wow! Sally Hepworth has done it again! Buy this book immediately. You won't be able to put it down, I promise. I could not get enough of this one, I just had to know what was going to happen next. Hepworth has a real talent for writing, and she was showing off with this one. If you a good domestic thriller, this will easily be a five star for you!

The story hooked me in the beginning, but lost steam. I was expecting more plot and twists. Not a bad read, but not the best. It had potential!

Wow. This book had me hooked right from the beginning. Unfortunately, it didn't keep me hooked, but I still really enjoyed it. The short chapters kept it moving right along. I do like how things were wrapped up at the very end.

Two marriages intertwined by secrets and mysteries, how well do you really know your one and only - your soulmate ? A house on the cliffs with the most beautiful view but also at times people who need to be talked down off the cliffs - is it worth living there, right on the edge ?
This book had me sitting on the edge of my seat flipping the pages because the story told was so twisty and wild I just had to get to the bottom of things as quickly as possible ! I can’t really say more without spoiling the fun - so I’ll stop right here with Sally Hepworth is always the right choice if you are looking for a thriller that captivates your attention and distracts you and entertains you the way only a good thriller can !
