These first five chapters were such a great beginning! I cannot wait to read the rest of the book. I especially loved chapter 5. The characters introduced so far are entertaining and the story has just started!

First, the cover of this book is SO CUTE! Like, really good job on that. This feels like a really good romance historical fiction novel. Also, MM? I'm here for it! It has a pretty good start that sucks me in and keeps my attention. really enjoyed the dialogue. I feel like Jess's talent really shines there. It feels really unique as well. Usually I'm not too into historical fiction, but this... this was good ("good" was in italics in my mind, by the way).

4,5 stars

Perfect for fans of Alexis Hall, this preview of The Gentleman's Book of Vices did exactly what it was supposed to do - get me to put this book on my upcoming TBR. These five chapters set up this story between a dissolute rake and a bookseller moonlighting as an erotic author perfectly with humor, heart, and even a little bit of heat. Honestly, the only reason I had to knock down a half star is because the text itself was fairly hard to read due to some spacing issues on the NetGalley app. That being said, this book has been immediately placed onto my Want to Read shelf and I am eagerly awaiting its release date in November.

Thank you to NetGalley and Carina Adores for this preview in exchange for a fair and honest review!

The Gentleman’s Book of Vices had a great start! I was given the first 5 chapters on the net gallery and it was so interesting. I have seen this book a lot these days and wanted to read it.

I will update my review when I. Read then full book, but I can say this was worth to read.

An intriguing start. The writing was very descriptive and poetic. The writing made me feel like I was actually reading the gentlemen’s book of vices. I can’t wait to see where this goes and I love that Alma is sweet and likeable and he treats her well. Hopefully there isn’t a conflict there.

The Gentleman’s Book of Vices had a fantastic first five chapters! I was immediately struck by the sense of queer community that is integral to the story. I loved it! Charlie is clearly going to have many romantic adventures and I’m curious to learn more about Miles’ past. Seems like this will be another wonderful addition to Carina Adores! Thank you so much to Jess Everlee, Carina Adores, and Netgalley for the opportunity to read the sampler in exchange for honest feedback.

I chose to read this excerpt because I remember really loving A Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue a few years ago, and this seems as compelling as that one! I am definitely going to be ordering this one!

I receive a Arc with the first 5 chapter, and as Far I can tell, this novel brought me a vague memory of "The gentleman's guide to vice and Virtue. But at the same time is totally unique. The characters seem to be very funny. The situation 😂...I can't wait to read the whole book

I requested the preview of this to see if I wanted to request an ARC. Based on this preview, I would definitely be interested in reading the book. It has a hint of KJ Charles's Sins of the City series, with the pub as gathering place/ found family and the isolated MC with tragic backstory. I really like the setup and the conflict that's built into the narrative: the need for secrecy, not just for being gay but because of the illegal pornography angle; the imminent marriage. The writing is smooth, assured, and enjoyable; the character work thus far is solid; and the silly misunderstanding around the cake and wine tasting is done very well, giving us more insight into both characters and how they relate to others as well as with each other. I like that the fiancee is a likable, fun character who's approximately as into Charlie as he is into her. All in all, a promising preview.

Not posting this preview to GR, but will post a proper review if I get an ARC.

Oh my God, I am in desperate need to read the rest!!!

This sample has only five chapters, but the first three already had me in a chokehold.

A queer man forced into a weeding and a brooding wine-lover gay-priest-smut-author? This short sample was enough to deem this book a new feature on my favourites shelf. I truly do hope that I have the pleasure and honour of getting the full ARC, but even if it happens I'm definitely getting a physical copy in November.

Thank you Carina Press and NetGalley for this sneakpeak eARC, I'm already hooked!

Oh my gods. I need this book yesterday. Five chapters and I already chortled, outright cackled, and got misty-eyed. This is, perhaps, the most captivating beginning of a book I've read in a good long while. I cannot wait for this book to come out so I can devour it and shout at absolutely everyone I know to read it. WOW!

AHHH!! I immediately requested the full copy because oh my god??? I need it. These first five chapters have such a great introduction to the wit, writing, and shenanigans that are absolutely going to be present in the entire thing.

The wine and cake tasting was delicious also I need cake and wine right now. A smut writer and his very earnest fan? Sign me the hell up. Said smut writer pretending to be a sommelier? Take my money. It’s reminding me of Tessa Dare’s Say Yes to the Marquess!

Review subject to change as I was given the opportunity to read the first 5 chapters of this book from NetGalley and Carina Press.

This is the start of what might be an amazing 2022 read. An MM historical fiction romance, with at least dual POV with a little spicy tension in the first 5 chapters? I can't wait to see what JE gives us with the full book.

This was a fun 5-chapter preview! It generally takes a bit for me to get into the swing of a book with a third person POV, but it was an interesting premise.

Not gonna give any rating, cause the ARC only has the first 5 chapters. But it looks really PROMISING!! The plot and the charcaters seem great - can't wait to see how things unveil! Charles' obsession with erotica books!!! The wine tasting scene is also amazing!

'He settled on giving Alma an indulged smile he'd been working on for the benefit of anyone who might question his husbandly affection' - this was wonderful writing and had me laughing out loud imagining it in my head. 😂

Oh. My. Gosh.

If the first five chapters are anything like the rest of the book, this is going to be one of the most enjoyable reads I've had through NetGalley. I personally do not like third-person books, BUT this one is already changing my mind. I do wish we had a little preview of the steam that's to come (as thats usually what makes or breaks these books for me LOL). But I loved this preview. I will definitely read the rest when it comes out.

Well, wasn't this a fun sneak peak! I really liked this, it was witty and funny but not so much that it became cheesy and unbearable. I definitely need to read the rest of this book right away!

This peek at the first five chapters got me interested enough in the story that I'd probably pick the book up if I saw it at the library once it's released, but it didn't capture my interest enough that I'd actively seek it out. The characters were likable enough, if not seeming particularly nuanced or surprising. Some of the story strained belief to the point of being a bit ridiculous, but if I care about the characters enough I don't mind that in a book. This definitely seems to be lighthearted in tone. Though it never made me laugh, it did make me smile a few times. I'm a little wary of American authors writing Brits and there were a few instances in the book where this felt pretty obvious.
I also find it odd that the title is so similar to that of A Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue, which is also a Victorian era queer romance, and which has a main character with the same last name as one of the characters in this book. I can't really see how similarities so striking could be accidental, so it just seems very strange to me. The storyline does seem to be completely different, and this is an adult book, whereas the other is YA, but it was just a bit jarring to note the other similarities.

Well, The Gentleman's Book of Vices has officially sealed its place as one of my most anticipated releases of 2022! I love Charlie and Miles already, and this seems such an original storyline and I love the dynamic between the two of them from their first interactions. Written very well, with a strong sense of atmosphere, I can get a sense of both MCs' wounds and what I hope will happen over the course of the book. So excited to read more!
