Ok, I'm going to be very transparent here. The description of Legacy Witches sounds fantastic, however only a few pages in I started seeing things I don't want to read: racism & domestic verbal abuse, which to be honest should be in the trigger warnings that the author listed in the beginning, but they're not.

Vianna returns to Salem after 10 years to handle her mother's affairs after her death. There's a love interest, some magic and a few enemies along the way. Overall, I think this is a good first book for a series. There was some choppiness in the beginning where the plot didn't quite flow correctly, but once I was past that, the story flowed well.
I really enjoyed the characters the most. I could feel Vianna's struggles with returning home and the side characters were good comedic relief. I would rate this book as a 3.5 stars and am excited to see where the second book takes us.

Magic, small town life, and a history of murderous witches is a fantastic combination. I sometimes add books to my TBR.2 list and will definitely be rereading this one in the future.

This is a captivating book that was completely unexpected in how it grabbed my attention. The attention to detail and the love and warmth for this story I can feel through the writing. It is very inclusive with LGBTQ+ and POC representation.

Legacy Witches by Cass Kay is a delightful debut set in Salem, MA. The main protagonist, Vianna Roots, is the youngest witch in a line of legacy witches. Vianna returns to Salem for her mother, Angeline's, funeral. The book delves into Vianna's history and her family dynamics. The reader is drawn into her complicated world filled with intrigue, shadows and quirkiness. This was an enjoyable read! I recommend it for those who are into the supernatural world. This is book 1 of a new series. I am curious about book 2! Anyway, on to my review!
I really liked this book. There were a lot of great details and interesting descriptions. Overall, it is a good story. I felt that there could have been more character development and a little less drama. The drama seemed to take away from the character development and back story, in my opinion. So, I have to rate this a 3 out of 5.
Shuck is an interesting character. How did a demon and a witch bond? Why? Usually, witches and demons are sworn enemies. I hope the second book tells readers more about Shuck.
Vienna, I liked her grit and her attitude. I was put off by how oblivious she is about the people in her life. Like, her mother saved her from a delusional uncle and yet she still throws shade. Vienna was lucky that day. Angelina is not perfect but not a total monster. I would like to see more about Angeline.
Gray. There was very little written about him, the hot detective. I hope that he plays a more prominent role in the next book. He could be a steadying influence on Vianna.
Sandeen. She is a lovely and quirky person, just what Vianna needs! I liked her character a lot, probably my favorite character!
The drama. I like some of it and it's needed since Vianna left town and returned. Vie ruffled feathers. But there could have been less about some snobby characters and more about the covens and other inhabitants of Salem. The history of the town would have been nice. And what is hoodoo? I'm left with questions about hoodoo and voodoo and some shady character who covets the Roots house.
I received a ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Wow! Vianna Roots put a total spell on me. She’s just your local witch denying her legacy but she finds maybe accepting her legacy as a Roots witch isn’t that bad as long as she doesn’t kill anyone like her ancestors did. Surviving without bloodshed with the entire witch coven of Salem out to get her won’t be the easiest but Vie is a literal badass. This book sucked me in and made me want to move straight to Salem. I loved the writing style and the characters. Such a great read! Thank you NetGalley for such a great eARC!

I did not expect to love this book. I enjoy all witchy books but so many are too YA (don’t get me wrong. Love a good ya- but it’s YA witches can be tired and overdone), I assumed this would follow the same old format. However, Legacy Witches surprised me in being very well written, mature, and a great original story. The Salem ancestry made for an interesting depth and I loved that a lot of the story was not just given to you. There was a lot of reading between the lines and leading you down the path of a full story. Definitely had a mystery/suspense element that was well done. There were surprises throughout. Also to note that it was a diverse set of main and supporting characters.

Witches, found family, adventure, mystery and humor!
I absolutely loved this book, and ripped through it in a matter of days. Definitely an author to watch!

Legacy Witches was absolutely enchanting! Kay wrote a story that was so well written I found myself flying through the pages, unable to put the book down, pondering what would happen next. My favorite piece of this entire story was how believable the characters were.
The writing is clear and clean, and very immersive. The book hums along at a good clip, but the pacing makes sure we're given time to breathe between plot-intensifying moments. The story was absolutely engaging and the work that went into the settings was noticeable and superb. I felt absolutely transported and I'm so incredibly glad I was able to read an arc of this story

I went into this book with very little knowledge. I have never read this author but I was looking for something paranormal and maybe a little spooky and the cover caught my attention. I read this book SOOO fast and I couldn't put it down. It had everything I love about a witchy book. It had a demon possessed house that chooses who comes and goes and hid items and growls, it had major family drama and murderous ghosts and death scenes spiraling throughout the house. It has a small town with a rich history and a so many witches to learn about it. The book as great world building that is based on history and feels so real. I want more!!!
This reminds me in some ways of the Sookie Stackhouse books with the day to day interactions with huge actions scenes with tons of witchy knowledge (instead of vampires). I love the writing style and the found family and could see reading many more books in this world. I need more Vianna & Dee and Grayson and I can see them working together to solve some mysteries.

Legacy witches gives you all kinds of supernatural vibes. The MC is a strong survivor kind with an attitude that crosses some people the wrong way. She doesn’t fit into peoples requirements and molds. Her path is her own and her choices in life are hers alone to make.
Vianna’s journey back home is anything but smooth; she ran away only to return on the doorsteps of Salem, because of her mothers death. Her inheritance comes with mysteries and new revelations. Take the dive and follow Vianna into the world of covens, hoodoo, demons, and ghosts! You will be turning page after page following the mystery and characters that all have their own agendas to reveal.

Legacy Witches was a good first book in, what I'm hoping is, a new series. I love paranormal mysteries so the synopsis of this book really intrigued me. Vianna (Vie) Roots is an interesting protagonist. She genuinely doesn't want to have anything to do with being a legacy witch. There was quite a lot that happened to Vie pretty quickly in the story. It would've been nice to have some of that spread out so it didn't seem like Vie was fighting something or someone on every page. And there was one horrible male character who didn't really seem to get punished enough for what he did to Vie several times in the book. I would've liked to have seen him suffer more legal consequences for his transgressions. But kudos to the author because she wrote that character so well that I swear I almost felt grimy just reading scenes he was in. All in all, I really enjoyed this book. I'm looking forward to reading book two if there is one.

The first line grabbed me in its initial horror. Then the story became everything I wanted in a daunting tale of haunted houses, witches, and everything else in between.
For readers bored of ‘good’ witches. This is definitely a hard-to-put-down book.

Legacy Witches was so much fun to read especially if you’re someone who loves all things witches and supernatural. Vianna is a feisty main character who is reluctantly out to solve the mysteries of her mother, her missing best friend and what she wants from her life. This is the first in a series and I am EXCITED to read more!!

Legacy Witches was a very fun read. Lots of eerie things happening. Hoodoo, magic, murder and so much of the unknown. Vianna Roots comes from a long line of legacy witches. She didn’t want anything to do with it so she ran away from her Salem home to Boston. When her mother dies, she has to return to Salem for the funeral and sell the family home. Vianna sees the ghosts of the dead all around her. She has to decide if she wants to stay for good, or get away as soon as possible. I am anxious to read the next in the series.
Thank you NetGalley and publisher for the advanced copy.

Vianna Roots left her hometown of Salem to get away from the Blood Coven…and her mother. But when her mother dies, she returns home to the family home with plans to sell it and get back to Boston as quickly as she can.
You know what they say about best laid plans…and as Vianna is at the house she finds that her best friend is missing and wants to find out what happened to her. With the Blood Coven anxious for her to leave town, she finds it difficult to protect herself as a solitary witch. On the other hand, she’s made a new friend and reconnected with an old crush. Stay or go? That decision will be made once Vianna figures it out herself. But for now, she needs to try and keep herself safe while she figures everything else out.
While at times there’s a lot going on this book, it’s the first in a new series and that takes some groundwork to lay the foundation. Once you get through the book, you find yourself eager for the next entry in this series. This book has it all, witches, ghosts, hoodoo, demons and more. If you’re into witchy and supernatural series, THIS ONE IS FOR YOU!

Vianna Roots comes from a long line of witches, legacy witches. She could also see the dead which is a gift she would rather not have acquired. She has denied her mother's coven because they are killers but has to return to the family home she has now inherited when her mother dies. She then discovers her friend is missing and goes on the hunt to find out what has happened to her. Vianna must also find a way to protect herself from the other covens since she is a solitary witch. As the story unfolds, she has to figure out what she really wants versus what she thought she wanted.
I enjoyed this book so much. It is a story of family, friends, and finding your own path. If you love a good witch story, check this book out when it publishes on October 11, 2022.

Favorite character: Vianna / Dee
Words that come to my mind: cruel / eerie / unsettling
Favorite quote: Maybe survival meant focusing on what she could do instead of the worst that could happen
After the death of her mother, Vianna Roots is left with no other choice but to return to Salem, her hometown from which she fled ten years ago, to attend her funeral. Vianna's return brings up her past, she was desperate to leave behind, building up a life of her own in Boston. But as the last legacy witch in the Roots family line, she now inherits the family's haunted house and has to face the Blood Coven, she never joined for a good reason.
As a solitary witch, a witch without a coven, and as an outcast looked down to by the other witches, Vianna's plan is simple: Sell the house and leave Salem as soon as possible.
Her plan quickly falls apart when she discovers that the house is haunted by the ghost of her childhood best friend, apparently murdered by Vianna's mother, and no one seems to know or care about it.
Vianna feels she owes it to her former best friend to find out what happened to her and starts to snoop around, what earns her even more attention from the Blood Coven.
The Coven wants to make sure Vianna leave Salem as quickly as possible and they make an offer on her house, but after starting to bond with the demon familiar who possesses her house, finding a new friend and the attention from her former crush, Vianna is no longer sure if that's what she wants.
Legacy Witches has so much to offer! Covens, ghosts, demons, hoodoo, murder, friendship and the struggle with finding your own path. Vianna is a very reliable main character who wants to do the right thing by staying away from the murderous Blood Coven and who struggles with her conscience when she is nonetheless drawn into the witches world, which she was determined to avoid.
I loved the friendship Vianna builds with Dee, another solitary witch, outcasted for being transgender. She was amazing and I loved she parts of the book with her in it.
In the middle of the book I was a bit overwhelmed (like Vianna) because so many different things happened, but after I finished the book I discovered there's going to be a second one, so it makes perfect sense that not everything gets cleared up during the first book.
It would have been helpful to know that this is a series beforehand, because I was worried about not getting enough information about parts of the book that interested me more, such as the hoodoo part and the relationships between the police and the covens.
I will definitely read the next book and if you like witches, Legacy Witches is a great self-published book to read and support! It will be released on October 11, 2022. I think it's actually my favorite book of June 2022, and not far away from 5 stars!
