This book was similar to others but still one of a kind. Love that you got a bit of the past which explained why she steered clear of her hometown and the relationships with others, yet you get to experience her growing and coming into her own as not only a witch but as a woman. Even though it's got fantasy and some heavier subjects, it's still fun

This book was interesting, I loved the storyline and the characters were well written. I would highly recommend this book to everyone!!

I really enjoyed legacy witches. It had the perfect mix of witches, ghosts, hoodoo. I couldn't put the book down.
The characters were great. I loved Vianna and Dee's friendship.
Can't wait to read more by Cass Kay

Witches ✅ seeing ghosts ✅ running from your legacy to be dragged back in ✅ a demon familiar that is hosted by your house ✅ this book was absolutely fantastic. I loved the growth that the main character had in this, facing her fears and doing what she thought is right rather than easy. I can’t wait to read more! Also: there’s a trans rep in this book, and I’m pretty sure she’s my favorite character. She’s the bees knees.
Vianna ran from Salem and everything that came with being a Legacy Witch a decade ago. Her mother died, and she’s back to lay her to rest and get the estate figured out. Only the ghost of her childhood best friend is now residing in her bathroom. She vows to figure out what happened, and the dominoes start tipping, revealing an ugly underbelly of the Salem witches.

Legacy Witches is book #1 in the Legacy Witches series by Cass Kay.
Vianna Roots comes from a long line of murderous witches. She runs away but comes back when her mother dies. She plans to sell the house and go back to her life in Boston, but she wants to solve the disappearance of her friend Nancy.
I thought this started out a bit slow, but I’m happy I stuck with it. I love the setting of Salem. Vianna didn’t enjoy the ghosts, but I did. Grandma spoke her mind. I like Vianna and Dee and Shuck, the house. The dynamics of the covens was interesting and I can’t wait to see what happens next for the solitary witches and whether Vienna can do things the way she wants.
Thank you to the author, Dream the Dream, and NetGalley for the Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) copy of this book and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

Interesting start to a new urban fantasy series!
Admitedly, I wasn't a huge fan of the first part of this book. I had a bit of trouble understanding or seeing where the story was headed. I thought there was too much going on and the main mystery wasn't being properly addressed. Plus, something I'm not in favor of, info dumping.
But that perception changed when I reached the halfway mark of the book. Things became much more clearer, all of the characters had been introduced, their intentions were pretty clear and the plot finally clicked.
I appreciated the humor in this book. The protagonist, Vianna, has a unique way of cursing and I thought that was hilarious. Also, the way her character was written, made her quite relatable. Her life is basically in shambles but she pushes through, she does the right thing and ends up prevailing.
Oh, and her relationship with Dee was adorable. I loved seeing their friendship develop.
Another aspect worth noting is the witchcraft part. I hate it when authors trick readers into thinking certain themes or elements will appear on the book and they only cover them on a surface level. This was not the case. Witchcraft is present all throughout the book. It's relevant to the entire story and there are plenty of scenes where it is involved. Plus, I thought it was really well done without over complicating things.
Despite my initial experience with this book, I'm glad I kept on reading. I'm sure the next installment will be equally if not more fun than this one and I'm really looking forward to reading it.

After Vianna Roots' mother dies, she reluctantly inherits the family's haunted house, and her demon familiar. Wanting to clear the house and sell it as soon as possible for some much needed cash, life gets in the way when Vianna is forced to confront her past and future. This was a dark, gothic read with lots of violence and death. While it was initially a slower start, it really picked up and had an engaging conclusion.
This was a NetGalley review.

To be honest, the first couple of chapters were difficult to get through. But I don't think it had much to do with the author and more to do with me being in a reading slump. Once I pushed past my hesitation, I was not disappointed.
The reason I requested this was because hello witches! But then you find out that Vianna is from a long line of murderous witches? Please, tell me more. I like how Cass Kay has made Vianna's character just continue to grow throughout the book. She is a hilarious protagonist that sees ghosts and Cass really shows the struggle she has with that. Most of the time it's harmless and fun, but you can tell that it takes it's toll on her more often than not.
The number one thing for me about this book was that we didn't have any love triangles, no burning love from a rival village or coven. It was a great read with the struggles of family legacy, friendship, and coming into your own.

I enjoyed this book so much!! It was a fun read while still being a bit dark and creepy. Great witchy vibes!! Characters were very well drawn..loved some hated some. Overall a very engaging book.

the FMC: Vianna- sees dead people, has great character growth, strong female lead, hates the other Legacy witches in town and they hate her just as much
POV: 3rd person single perspective
cliffhanger?: not, but openings for the next book
TWs: loss of parent, animal sacrifice, animal death, attempted SA, graphic murder, suicide, graphic violence, deadnaming (not from MC), mild to moderate transphobia- no slurs (not from MC), kinda mental illness?, monsters, demons, witches, haunted house, all the spooky stuff
standalone?: the first in a series!
Vianna can see ghosts and is part of a Legacy family in Salem but chooses her own path until her mother's death forces her back home for the burial. While at home, we get to "meet" several of her ancestor's ghosts, the demon who is possessing her home, and we discover the ghost of her childhood best friend. Vianna decides to stay to solve the mystery of her disappearance and ultimately her death and has to fight a lot of stigma along the way
This is a super fun, but dark, read full of characters you love, hate, and everything in between
There is family drama and town drama to the max and there's never a dull moment- I'm excited to see how the series plays out as there was a lot of room for elaboration and several characters who I would've liked to see more of

This is a really great, fun read! With so many "witchy" books on the market it's hard to find something that feels fresh and different, and I think that Cass Kay gave us just that! I loved the writing in this book and the pacing is spot on. The characters are so well fleshed out that they felt real in some ways.. I look forward to reading more by this author - well done!

Going into this one, I was worried that I would be bored with it because I feel like its hard to come up with an original witch story nowadays. But Cass Kay has given us a riveting new witch novel that was original and enjoyable. I enjoyed that witches were mixed with fantasy and the story kept me captivated from start to finish. I am looking foward to the sequel.

A great read by this author. I definitely recommend checking this one out!
Thank you NetGalley for providing a copy of this ARC in exchange for an honest review!

I really enjoyed this novel! My favourite genre of books is witchy books, and this had a fresh feel, which is great, and promising as this is the beginning in a series! I did feel it was predictable, and it felt more like a dark fantasy than horror, but it had really good bones, so I'm excited to see how this author grows in her writing :)
I did also find a few errors in this book so another look through from an editor would definitely do this book a favour, but it wasn't anything too major.
Thanks so much NetGalley and Cass Kay for this fantastic arc! I can't wait for more :D

Legacy Witches is a very good book, full of dark atmosphere and with a kick-ass female character.
I love read it.

Vianna Roots is a witch from Salem. Her anceresters can be traced back to the Salem Witch Trials. After high school Vianna ran away to escape the abuse of her mother and the coven that they belonged to. Ten years later after her mother passed away she finds herself back in salam to take care of he mothers estate.
The coven that she ran from is now out to et her along with several other people. Vianna just wants to clean out her mother's old house, sell it, and leave Salem behind her for good. But will she make it out unharmed?
I absolutely loved this dark tale of witches and Salem.

Murderous witches, spells and my favorite city in the world, Salem? COUNT ME IN! I've always enjoyed Witchy books and had high expectations going into this one and it did not disappoint. The author is descriptive but not in a way where you get irritated, you can literally put yourself in the world and envision what she's trying to get across to the readers. There are 2 instances of animal death, one including a dog which typically pisses me off because it's usually added for shock value but it fits with the era. Some will say it's predictable and yes maybe because it is a series so going in I knew that Vianna wasn't going anywhere. I absolutely enjoyed this story and am so excited for the next book to come out. Thank you to #netgalley and Cass Kay for the advanced copy (sorry it took so long to read but #life) #LegacyWitches is a book you should add to your TBR if you enjoy Witchy books

4.5/5
I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review, thank you!
It took me bit to read this.
Although the plot and writing style were really good and gripping, I found myself putting the book down and pausing reading at specific points in the story because it either hit a bit too close to home, or was pretty horrific to read, or because I am sadly a people pleaser and the MC Vianna is the polar opposite the way she talks and thinks. I admire that and strive to be more like that but it was excruciating sometimes how little of a fuck she gave hahah
Also, excellent witch-vibes, if you like that aesthetic or vibe with witchy stuff and magick, I can definitely recommend this to you!
My favourite characters were:
Vianna, of course
Shuck , the family's familiar <spoiler> who took over the house (if you saw Encanto, Shuck is like a gruffer Casita) </spoiler>
Dee, <spoiler> Vianna's trans bestie-to-be </spoiler>
and
Gray, <spoiler> the stoic but nice policeman who does not make enough appearances in the story, hopefully he'll come back! </spoiler>
TW: MC gets nearly SA'd twice, some characters purposefully deadnaming a trans character, violence and gore

This book read like a YA novel in the first several chapters and I almost DNF’d it for that reason. I’m glad I didn’t, as the final fight scene was the best part of the book. There was quite a bit of world building and it wasn’t clear to me if the coven world was really known to regular humans. If so, I would have liked to see more interaction ( besides the police) with the real world and how they function with the inner workings of the coven.
There were multiple typos throughout the novel, and some line editing is needed.
My favorite part of the book was shuck. What a cool concept to have the familiar be part of the house!

Legacy Witches is a book about old witches blood lines in Salem. The first thing that appealed to me what that, the simplicity of the theme. I wanted to read something that was fiction with a bit of disturbing elements, as well as being well narrated, and this book delivered. Very well written, while at the same time being easy to read. It’s not a complex story, but I feel the characters are well developed and the story is appealing. Overall a very good book, enjoyable and entertaining.
