Thank you to NetGalley and Cass Kay for the eARC.

Honestly, I thought I would enjoy this book more than I did. The story has some seriously great aspects: a demon-bound house, legacy witches, ancestral ghosts, and more. There were also some great characters: the aforementioned ghosts, Dee. And characters you loved to hate.

My main issue with this book (and it was a pretty big one) was the main character. She was a mess, which the author enjoyed reminding us about every other page. If there's a seam in the sidewalk, she would trip over it, slam into a guy with hot coffee, soil the last clean shirt she owns, and run headlong into a street sign. Supposedly she's also a free thinker and blazes her own trail, but she remarkably gets roped into doing many things she doesn't want to. And she drinks a lot of moonshine for someone targeted by coven witches. Witches want to kill me? No problem, let's drink.

Vianna is supposed to come from a line of awesomely powerful witches, but she never seems to show us any magic. All her battles are fought by other people (including those who don't like her and randomly never show their faces again). So, we're told she has these extraordinary witchy powers, but where's the proof?

So many characters are thrown away because they barely exist in this book: Tuck, Grayson, and Csada. I was disappointed not to see more of them.

Overall, it was a fine read, but it could be much more. And the main character could annoy me less.

If you are into witches, the supernatural, and family drama in more than one way, this is a book for you.

Vianna Roots ran away from her home many years ago and had to return back. When you are a teenager who skips town in the middle of the night, you're usually not so well welcomed back by the town. Add to this the Coven in which Vianna and her mother were members.

I liked the characters and their development throughout the book.
The lore, the setting, the pace, and the spells were laid out nicely for the reader.

It was a great mix of fantasy, mystery, and drama.

"Hex bags and voodoo dolls, and that was from within the safety of her [own] demon-possessed house. What would happen if she tried to go into town?" loc1672 Kindle ebook

Thank you to Cass Kay and NetGalley for a gifted digital ARC to read of this book.

I'm still trying to decide if "witch fiction" is my genre, but one of the things that I do really love about it is in plenty of supply here in Cass Kay's LEGACY WITCHES and that's the emphasis on family-- born or found. For that matter, the end of this book is the freaking best, and the form is nice too in the way it sort of opposes the beginning not just in position but in tone, outlook, and of course this important subject to witchcraft. Family.

I had a difficult time at first finding my way, but once I did, this was an easy story to enjoy. This is such a witchy book! Herbs, Spells, Lore! My favorite scene is the one in which the ghost Csada attacks the fmc Vianna with a voodoo doll-- disconcerting and darkly funny all at once!

Witch assassins, generational trauma, a demon house. Where do I even start with this review. This book was one thing after another and the pace had me racing to the end. The world building was fun and I really enjoyed the setting. The sheer amount if shenanigans in this book are a great! From mouthy ghosts, to spells gone haywire there’s even a fair bit of mystery woven in. Vianna is one hell of a MC. Conflicted as she is in the beginning her development into badassery was fantastic. This book has characters you will love, some you will hate, and some you will want to pull out and smack around. My favorite character by far was Dee but to find out why you’ll have to read it!

3.5⭐️ rounded up

The book is well written and researched which made it very enjoyable to me. I did feel it had a slow start but overall I liked the book and would recommend it.

I loved that this wasn't one of those softer nice Salam witch books and that true to practice aspects that the author wrote. If you're interested at all in the craft or things of the like you can appreciate the author's knowledge on the subject and how it came across in the book.

This book caught me so off guard. I loved it. It scared the crap out of me, I loved Vianna and Dee was amazing love her. The familiar taking over the home bringing it to life, the ghosts, the covens, modern day world, so much happened what a tide. Book 2 please

Thank you NetGalley and the author @casskaywrites for a copy of this ebook in exchange for an honest review.

This was my first ever witchy read! I have never dappled into the genre and didn't have much of an interest, so I was pleasantly surprised with how much I liked this book. The characters were likeable and the plot was interesting. The writing is very good and pulls you in immediately. I thought it was a good book, especially if you like paranormal and witchy themes.

The way I absolutely LOVED this book. I'm honestly going to get a physical copy because it was almost like a comfort book for me.

I LOVED the atmosphere Cass created, and all the characters were fully developed. And don't get me even started on my absolute LOVE for the absolute *witch* of a grandmother ghost. Obsessed.

Thank you so much Netgalley & Cass Kay for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for giving me a copy of this book!
Characters: I think the characters are interesting. I liked this dynamic of having Vianna a legacy Witch and Dee who isn't. It tied into a lot of the themes of the book. Grayson was a fun addition.

Atmosphere: Witchy book set in Salem? Yes please! Everything happened in this one spot where the coven lives and I think it really suited the vibe.

Writing: Writing was good.

Plot: the story was something we have seen before: the main character wanting to move on from their family legacy but gets dragged back. There were some different things going on though. It does feel like this might turn into a series, and based off of the ending, I would be interested in continuing.

Intrigue: I was intrigued to see how the main villain would fit into this.

Logic: I thought it was logical within its own rules.

Enjoyment: I enjoyed this book quite a bit and would continue if this was a series! 4/5 stars!

I loved this book. The diverse characters, mystery and Gianna's strength kept me enthralled. This is the first in an exciting new series. Eat your heart out Mayfair Witches, there's a new witch and coven in town.

This debut is absolutely stunning! Witches, Murder, mayhem.. the writing is wonderful. Kay does a spectacular job of building her own little world in Salem. This is a must read for any witchy story lover!

I was surprised how much I enjoyed this first in a series fiction about hostile witch families in Salem, contending for territory and power. Vianna returns to her home after her mother’s death determines to flip her house — but discovers that her former best friend haunts her house and apparently met a grisly end there. She needs answers and needs to sell the house, but wouldn’t you know it? Obstacles magically arise from every quarter. I enjoyed this fast-paced story of Vianna literally and figuratively facing her demons and would absolutely read the next book in this series.

I received a complimentary copy of a digital arc from the publisher and NetGalley in exchange for this honest review.

This was a slow to start one for me but once it got going, I enjoyed it. Loved the sassy demon house and the friendship between Vianna and Dee. I'm curious to see where the next one will go!

Wonderful introduction into a world of witches and witchcraft and everything that goes with it. It might not be what you expect! Cass Kay wrote a lovely book that makes you like the characters, even sympathy fo the ones you're not supposed. You get to get to know the characters along the lines of them getting to know themselves, what even is the legacy of a legacy witch, dive in and find out

Vianna was an enjoyable character to read. I also like the complexity of the witches - we've had good witches for too long! Shuck, Vianna's familiar who also happens to be her house was an inventive concept, too. Looking forward to the next installment!

I was really excited for this book, especially right around Halloween season. The description has everything I love in a witchy book, and I couldn’t wait to get started. The world building and character development are great, but overall I think I’m left giving it a 3.5 rounded up because somewhere along the way the plot fell a little short for me. There was so much potential but it took a while to build to climax and then resolved too quickly after that and I was just left wanting a bit more to it. I would recommend this book as a good quick ya story, and would love to see more from this author because the writing is engaging and entertaining, just needs a little more meat on the bones, so to speak.
