A beautifully written story about family, survival and resilience. A historical novel with thrills and drama. The story is set during World War Two and shows us what people are capable of during some of the most horrific events. I love reading stories of how people come together and fight side by side each other. The human spirit may become wounded but it’s never completely broken. Superb story telling with excellent characters.

I received this novel ARC from Netgalley. Thank you to the author, the publisher and Netgalley for the oportunity to read and review this novel.

Set in 1930's Basque country, this story weaves the tale of Luken and Miren, a young couple with a family caught up in the Spanish Civil War. When the situation becomes too dangerous, Luken and Miren become refugees, first in France and then in Ireland. The novel twists it's way through the tumultuous war years to the early 1950's. Can Luke and Miren ever go home again? Or is that avenue closed off to them for good?

Reading the prologue, I felt sure I could guess the outcome of this story. However I was completely thrown by the ending. The novel was factually and grammatically correct and the author has done a fine job in that regard. Personally, I enjoy novels that are more 'atmospheric' and delve into the characters feelings and desires. While these characters did feel, think and dwell on issues, I would personally have enjoyed the novel more if there was more interaction and intensity between Luken and some of the other characters in the novel.

Where The Cricket Sings is the story of one family's struggles and hardship during the Spanish Civil War. Not familiar with the history of Spain, I had to do some extra reading about the subject. I found this book interesting, but just a little hard to follow. I received a complimentary copy of this ebook. The opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

This was such an interesting read for me on a personal level as I have Spanish blood in me and Irish blood in me so I found this a fascinateing read. I liked the writing, I found the storyline to be gripping and I thought the characters were well developed. A good solid read.

Unfortunately, I didn't find this book to my taste. I read about a third of it before giving up. I prefer books with more conversations between characters, and this seemed to be more heavily relying on narration.

First of all thank you so much for the opportunity to read this ARC. And second I really liked this book. I am so glad I chose this book to be the first book I read on here. I loved how the characters were written and I loved how the book just flowed nicely. There was no moment when I felt like I was bored. I will deff buy this book and recommend it to others.

I really enjoyed to read about this family 's life. What I found particularly interesting is that their story is so entangled within the story of their country, that I learned a lot about it: a very hard time for Basque people who lived in Spain in 1936 onwards! Also fascinating was their life in Ireland where they fled to and the political parallels drawn between both countries....
My first novel by the author but definitely not the last one!
I received a complimentary ARC of this novel from NetGalley and I am leaving voluntarily an honest review.

The title of this book needs to be changed immediately. It’s an obvious rip off of Where The Crawdads Sing and is simply riding on its coattails. Absolutely not acceptable.
