Witchy romcom, 2nd in a series, grumpy/sunshine, soulmates, forced proximity, cursed, demons, friends with benefits, dual POV

This book follows Rose, a witch and the sister of the last book’s main character. She commits a crime and has to do community service at a vet’s office. Enter the vet - Damian. He’s a grumpy, sexy, cursed demon who doesn’t appreciate Rose’s efforts to spruce up the place.

Naturally, Rose helps his business anyway and sparks fly between the two. Romance ensues and they have a hard time staying away from each other. The kicker - Damian is cursed to lose his soul the minute he falls in love and no one has been able to break the curse.

They agree to an understanding, but can they really protect themselves from their developing feelings?

The relationship is obviously the center point of this book HOWEVER I have to say I loved the plot too. I was invested in the ending. There was a lot of character development and fun scenes with the side characters. Rose follows in Damian’s footsteps (whether he approves or not) and learns how to become a supernatural bounty hunter. That was really fun to see. There was a lot happening between Julius and Damian as well that I enjoyed.

I LOVED this book! A fast, entertaining read. I even teared up a few times (especially with the puppies and Bella). I can’t wait for the next one! Olive’s story is going to be really fun and I can’t wait to see Bax chase her. Love this author! I think this book was even better than the first one.

Thank you NetGalley for this advanced reader copy.

This was the perfect grumpyxsunshine romance with the perfect amount of plot, spice and amazing characters. I couldn’t get enough of this book. It had a lot of references to pop culture classics. I loved all the supernatural and buffy references in the book, I’m sure I missed a few.

I was nervous going into it that I wasn’t going to like the contemporary witchy elements because sometimes I feel it isn’t executed well. But Asher did such a phenomenal job of creating a fun and unique witchy vibe in modern day New York. I couldn’t get enough of it!!

Damian is one of my new favorite book boyfriends!! The banter between him and Rose was a highlight to the book.

Tropes:
- GrumpyXSunshine
- soulmates!!
- forced proximity
- witchy vibes
- supernatural hunting

I loved the twist with the hex at the end. I do wish we got a bit more of Rose and Damian at the end.. but I’m sure we will get more of them in the next book. Can’t wait for the roommate situation with Olive and Bax!!

I did notice one error. Towards the end there is a line where Callie is changed to Cassie.

Thank you NetGalley and April Asher for an eARC of Not Your Exes Hexes.

I have read April Asher previously and adored the first book in this series. I was a little bit let down by this book. There was not as much playfulness between Rose and Damian as her previous story had. This book was filled with a lot more sexual tension, which considering the characters and their relationship makes sense, but I didn’t personally enjoy it as much as the banter that was present in Not the Witch You Wed. I did love Rose being able to figure out what she really wanted in life. I felt so bad for her in both books because her path had been so dictated to her in the past, and finding out that she wouldn’t be the next Prima could have been really hard on her. I feel that April did a great job helping navigate Rose onto a new path. I also really loved watching Damian fight his inner demons, and trying to figure out what he really felt and what that meant based on his curse. I am very excited to know that there will be at least one more book in this series which was perfectly set up in the is novel whom it shall be focused on. Overall, the sexual back and forth was not horrid but to much of a focus for my personal liking.
Thank you so much to St. Martin’s Press and Netgalley for allowing me to read an advance copy of this title.

Not Your Ex's Hexes was a sweet and entertaining follow up to Not The Witch You Wed. I'm really happy I took the time to read the first book in this inter connected series first because I think the first quarter of the book would be confusing if you haven't.

The story follows our two main characters as they reluctantly have to work with one another on an animal sanctuary after having a random one night stand with one another. Rose the female main character comes from a famous witch family and is trying to figure out what she wants in the world since giving up her Prima witch role and than we have Damian who is half demon and trying to live a normal life as vet after being an underworld bounty hunter for years.

I really liked the friends with benefits trope that was going on and I thought the sexy time banter and spicy scenes were great. I really liked Damian's POV he seemed mature and had a great back story so I really enjoyed being "in his head".

There were some fun moments in this book but there were times when it didn't work for me. Some of my issues with the first book were the lack of world building, stilted writing style and slight cheesiness factor and none of that was resolved in this book. So many times names and phrases were introduced to us and than randomly shortened for no reason which added unnecessary confusion.

Overall it was entertaining and sweet! Thank you so much to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the eARC in exchange for an honest review.

The first half of Not Your Ex’s Hexes was really slow and I struggled to get through it but thankfully it sped up in the second half. I really ended up enjoying it.

The book is filled with a lot of cheesy banter which wasn’t horrible. And it does get pretty steamy at time. I did like the characters.

There’s just a little bit of spice in this enemies to lovers/ forced proximity tale about a witch and a half demon. For those of us who grew up watching Charmed, this is the perfect little jaunt into a world where magic is an accepted part of every day life.

Rose ( the mc) is a witch who’s trained her whole life to become a leader; but suddenly that’s not the plan anymore. With her future now unclear she’s stumble about trying to find her place and ends up stumbling into bed with Damian for a one night stand. After an animal rescue goes awry, suddenly they find themselves stuck together for a lot longer than one night.

I found the characters funny, their tension real and the book fun. If the description sounds like your cup of tea, I think you’ll enjoy it.

Cute, funny, and sweet. A delightful weekend read. I really enjoyed the characters in this book. I loved the forced proximity and opposites attract tropes. I can’t wait for the next book in the series.

This is the second book in a fun paranormal romance series. Supernaturals and norms live together in the world and this book takes place in the NY Metro area. Rose Maxwell is the former Prima in Training, now that her older triplet sister's power has finally emerged, and is trying to figure out her new purpose in life. So far, through a series of jobs, knows what she does not want to do. After an animal rescue attempt goes awry, she is sentenced by the council to community service at the animal clinic run by half-demon veterinarian Damian Adams. In between caring for the animals, sparks fly and there are some unexpected adventures that lead to Rose figuring out what she wants to do. Mixed in there is the issue of Damian dealing with a serious hex put on him when he was a teenager.

I received a free copy of this book to review through NetGalley.

This book was disappointing and I was mostly pretty bored by it. I was interested in the main characters and their story but the plot was lackluster and the resolution unsatisfying. Very blah. I really liked Rose and Damian, but they didn't have the development they needed to redeem the bad parts of this book.

The worldbuilding of this universe continued to be inadequate and I was hoping this would be solved with this second book.

These Maxwell triplets are the best. Always there for each other. Now that Rose has stepped down as being the next Prima on the Supernatural Council, she is at a loss as to what is next for her. She has tried several jobs but it isn't until she has been given community service, that she has found sanctuary. Veterinarian Damon Adams is running his clinic and rescue retreat for badly treated animals. Purely by accident they meet and never could get each other out of their heads. Damon is a loner for a good reason. He is always trying to control the demon in him. Rose is a witch with many strengths. They enter into an arrangement, Neither figured it would take on a life of its own. In the end, the only way to end the soul hex, is for his human side to give in. It take the scene from the movie Say Anything to get Rose.

Not your Ex's Hexes is book 2 in the Supernatural Singles series, though it definitely stands alone as it follows the middle Maxwell sister, Rose. This was such a fun forced proximity romance between a witch and a half demon veterinarian.

I loved Rose's quirkiness and witty commentary as she continued to search for what she is meant to do now that she is no longer the Prima Apparent. Letting go of her old self that was always holding back and doing the right thing is so freeing for her, and it was nice to see her come into her own, even as she struggled with what that meant for her.

Damian is the resident grump to her sunshine, another fabulous trope. I love that even when he tries to come across mean and gruff, you can always see his good side in the end, and while we all know how this story will eventually end, getting there was so much fun.

This is a super steamy paranormal romance that will have you both laughing and holding your breath at times.

4.5/5 stars rounded up.

Really wanted to like this one, but couldn't get into it. I think it was a combination that I hadn't read the first book, the 3rd person POV and that maybe supernatural romances just aren't for me.

This book was an absolute delight to read. After reading and loving the first book, I was so excited to read this and it did not disappoint.

This series has such a great combination of wit, humor and of course romantic drama. There is incredible world building and the magic system feels fully developed.

In this book we get the continuation of the story of the triplets. In this one you see Rose who is now trying to figure out the course of her life after a very drastic change. We get to see her true personality instead of what you see in book one, which is what she believes she is supposed to be.

The romance in this one is just fabulous. You get to see a one night stand that did not go with planned. There's also forced proximity enemies to lovers. Good girl and bad boy. It's a whole lot of fun.

Rose and Damian have off the wall chemistry immediately. And the banter is fabulous!!! They are absolutely hilarious because they fight like cats and dogs, but they cannot deny the chemistry that they have with each other.

Thank you so much to NetGalley and St. Martin's Griffin for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Rose Maxwell trained her entire life to be the next Prima on the Supernatural Council. Now that she has stepped down, she can focus on herself and find what she is truly meant to do.

After trying to free what she believed to be endanger horses, she is sentenced to community service at an animal sanctuary. That sanctuary happens to be owned by super hot, half demon Veterinarian Damian. Who also happens to be her only one night stand.

When their attraction becomes too much for them both to handle, they decide a friends with benefits, no strings attached arrangement would suit them both. But the closer they get, the harder it becomes to have no strings and Damian needs to avoid falling in love because his Ex’s hex means he will loose his humanity if he falls.

This is really my first dive into paranormal romance besides the years of Twilight and it was an interesting dive. Not sure the genre is for me, as much as I enjoyed the spicy romance between Rose and Damian, there was just something in the language and writing that didn’t work for me. It was a bit too cheesy and some of the dialogue was a bit juvenile, such as the amount of times the name ‘Grumpy Pants’ was used. Some of the dialogue did not feel like it belonged to thirty somethings.

I did however enjoy the relationship of the three sisters and the grandmother. These parts of the book felt more genuine to me. This is the second book in the series, but I didn’t feel lost having not read the first.

If you are someone who enjoys cutesy paranormal romance, this may be for you, but for me as my intro into the genre it didn’t leave me wanting more.

Thank you St.Martin’s Press for an advanced reader copy of this book.

It was the title that caught my eye on Netgalley. I got curious, but since this was a second book in a series, I was hesitant. Starting in the middle of a series can be tricky and since April also was an unknown author to me, I decided it was for the best to skip this one. But every time I started up Netgalley to check for new titles, my eye was drawn to the cover of Not your Ex’s Hexes. So I caved and requested the arc.

And boy, am I happy that I got this one! The serie is about the Maxwell sisters, witches who live in New York. In this part we follow Rose, whereas Violet has gotten her HEA in Not The Witch You Wed. And although I will probably go and read the first part as well, you can perfectly read this story as a stand alone. Damian is a marsh mellow demon: grumpy tough exterior but with a soft and tender heart inside. Too bad that he got hexed by one of his previous girlfriends, preventing him from ever having a lasting relationship.

When Rose is sentenced to community hours at Damian’s vetinarian clinic, they agree to a FBA, because neither of them are looking for a long term relationship. The story is funny, cute and full of wonderful characters, like Edie (Rose’s grandmother) Christina (Rose’s mother), Violet and Olive (Rose’s sisters). And let’s not forget Bax (I bet there is a story there) and Julius, Damian’s half-brother. So, five out of five stars from me and a special thank you to Netgalley for providing the arc.

In the very beginning i would say i didn't understand a single thing but that could have been my fault i didn't read the first book but now that i'm more into this book understand what's going on and definitely wanna go back and read the other books.

The not understanding and the ending was really the only problem i had while reading this book like the ending i didn’t really like how rose acted to callie but like i understand why she acted like that but like callie was 18 same goes for damion so the way rose acted to callie was idk i just didn’t like it but that was me

The not understanding and the little part of the ending has been my only problem like it isn't a slow burn thank the gods i can't with slow burns and it all just happened really fast but not in a way that you feel the book was rushed.

and let me tell you the tension or like i don't even know how to say it but like you could just feel it while reading, especially in this one scene (NO SPOILER) but she may or may not have gotten hurt and OMFG <3

does this book have a predictable plot yes but there are a lot of things that also happens in this book that just makes it so much more interesting to read also getting a sneak peak of the maybe so next book too? ;)

I loved this one even more than the first book. I laughed, I cried, I swooned. Damian is 🔥. I couldn't put this down. This is the perfect cozy, spicy, witchy Valentine's Day read. I love the family and the friends. Perfect character development. I really hope there are going to be more books (Olive or even Harper). I highly recommend you picking this up February 7th!

Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and St. Martin's Press for the gifted e-book ❤️

4.5 ⭐️ 2.5🌶

Stop the cauldron! This witchy romance brought the heat. We loved the second Maxwell sister’s story. Previously mated to a bad supernatural kitty, Rose is ready to take the world by storm. No one can stand in her way until the sexy part demon veterinarian finds his way in. Damian should be a slam dunk new lover interact but no, Asher throws us for a delightful hoop. Damian has a hex placed on him - we learn all about him and his hex across this captivating novel.

The Maxwell sisters continue to be a delight and we are left with an HEA that is awesome. I’m sooooo anticipating Olive’s story next.

Highlights:

🪄 A hex to end all hexes
🐴 animal sanctuary hijinx
🧙‍♀️ witchy heroine
😈 demon love interest
👯‍♀️ sister love that cannot be replaced

Thank you Net Galley and St. Martin’s Press for the ARC. All opinions here are my own.

Not Your Ex’s Hexes by April Asher

Published: February 7, 2023

Genre: Romantic Comedy
KKECReads Rating: 4/5
I received a copy of this book for free, and I leave my review voluntarily.

April Asher, aka April Hunt, was hooked on romantic stories from the time she first snuck a bodice-ripper romance out from her mom's bedside table. She now lives out her own happily-ever-after with her college-sweetheart husband, their two children, and a cat who thinks she's more dog—and human—than feline. By day, April dons dark blue nursing scrubs and drinks way too much caffeine. By night, she still consumes too much caffeine, but she does it with a laptop in hand, and from her favorite side of the couch.

“… when someone finds their purpose, magical things happen.”

Rose is trying to figure out what her calling is. Now that her sister is working with the Prima, her day has a lot of empty hours when she crosses paths with the hot veterinarian, and their chemistry is off the charts. Too bad he has secrets.

This was cute. I enjoyed the storyline, though I wish I had read the first book before reading this one. I feel like there were details I missed without reading the first book.

The storytelling was fun, and I enjoyed the plot. I don’t usually read this romance genre, but I enjoyed the magic. I found the pacing perfect for the story, and I enjoyed the characters.

This was a charming read. The personalities were all larger than life, which made sense for a supernatural community. I enjoyed Rose and Damien finding their way, and the side characters were all the perfect comedic relief.

I think this series will be really good. A lot of thought and planning has gone into bringing this world to life, and the development is strong. I would read the third book.
