Creepy, haunting and intense this book is an incredible read. It was twisty and unpredictable and had me on the edge of my seat. I loved it.

I didn’t enjoy this one much. I found it very lacking and quite confusing. I struggled through it until the end which left me unsatisfied and very unsettled. The book disappointed me a lot. My thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.

The House on the Lake by Holly Hill Mangin was the spine-tingling haunted-house mystery with a twist that I needed to get me out of a bit of a reading rut. This unique thriller was honestly better than anything Mr Riley Sager could dream up. 5 stars!

Thank you to NetGalley for the free copy. This review is wholly my own.

This story follows Eve who is afraid of water but has found herself on an island with no recollection of how she got there.

Mega paranormal and ghostly vibes.

Characters are likable and there are just enough twists to keep you guessing. Great debut book for this author.

There are times when the story line would get a bit confusing, but all in all, it was worth the read and I would recommend it.

I really wanted to like this book, as the concept really intrigued me. However, I found the writing style and dialogue to be clumsy and sophomoric, while the characters and story lacked the depth required by a more high-concept plot. I saw all the twists coming right away and was baffled by the forced and unnecessary romance subplot. The author kept telling me everything, but showed me nothing.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the advanced read copy.

This book was just ok for me. I found the big reveal predictable and guessed the plot twist as soon as all characters were revealed.

The writing was nothing spectacular. I felt as though the author was bouncing back and forth from trying a funny, modern way of writing to trying to be insightful.

The house and its slow destruction was such a cool idea, I wanted more description, exploration, and intrigue! Unfortunately the love story and strained relationships among the characters took away from that portion. If one subject had been the focus, I think the author really could have elaborated on that, instead the wide scope of topics left each one feeling stretched thin.

The premise of this book had a lot of potential and was very interesting, but overall the execution could have been better. 2.5 stars rounded down for me!

Thanks to Netgalley and BooksGoSocial for this incredible mystery. How did she get there? Why would she be there? This book has you wanting immediately to know why, where, and how. The reader must be brave to get through these pages to find out how Eve arrived at Lakeview Manor. Even though she loves spooky settings, she questions everything around her. This is a perfect fall mystery; get your blanket and candle and dive into this one! Will Eve ever leave the island? Read and find out......

This books has so many elements to it!! (in a good way)
I did have trouble sleeping so had to stop reading it at night 😆 (but I scare so easily)
A bit of a slow burn at first but then really gets going.

It's my first time trying Holly Hill Mangin and would definitely try another book by her.

The house on the Lake is so edge on your seat, teeth gnashing and fingers bitting spooky, but in a very good way😉. I was so hooked on the plot right from the first page and just wanted to find out how it all unfolds. This book is worth reading!.

I was very excited to read this book for many reasons, the least of which is that I really love mysteries. The title and book cover are engaging, and I grew up on Lake Michigan. When I first started reading, I was very confused with Eve’s mirror twin, but perhaps that’s the whole point: intrigue.

I found the book hard to get through, but I felt I wanted to see where the author takes us. I liked Nick, and could see why Eve did as well. Midway through the book I gave up, but it may also be that I am not used to reading online; I prefer hard back books to curl up with. I skipped to the end, which was fitting,. I think most mystery lovers will enjoy this book, many elements added to the storyline of Eve going back. Give it a try.

An island is the last place Eve Beckett ever thought she’d end up. Deathly afraid of water, she has no memory of arriving at the foreboding Lakeview Manor on the Isle of Esse. Her love for a good mystery, however, especially when it comes to strange houses and the paranormal, has her second-guessing her desire to leave.
But there’s something odd going on at Lakeview. Dark and dusty rooms shift location, and there’s a mysterious woman only Eve seems able to see . . .
When Eve’s mirror twin shows up, also with no memory of how she arrived on the island, and the property manager warns them away from his brother one Eve has no wish to avoid the number of mysteries surrounding Lakeview becomes too much. As she learns more about the manor and its inhabitants, the question becomes not just how but if Eve will ever leave the island.
Couldn’t put it down really enjoyed this book totally recommend

I couldn't connect to the story. I thought it was a little too psychological for my liking and it was a little boring. I didn't like the beginning which was confusing because I felt like I was thrown into a story that was half way finished. The atmosphere was interesting but there wasn't enough spookiness to keep me interested.

I finished this book and said Wow, actually out loud. This book was phenomenal and I am so happy that I received and e-copy from @netgalley and the publisher. There’s not much I can say about this book without giving it away, it’s so delicately wound with each piece being a clue.

Eve finds herself in an old manor on an island one day with no recollection of how she got there. She’s terrified not only because she can’t remember but because she’s terrified of water. Awww remembers wanting to do a retreat and thinks this is it, but then strange things keep happening m. The rooms shift? And there’s a woman only she can see. Her sister is there but not all the time. Eve struggles to figure out what’s going on but the pieces slowly come together and she knows.

This book was labeled as a horror book in Goodreads and that made me nervous, but to me nothing about this book was horrific. There was zero violence or gore just images of paranormal. I don’t think those two always go hand in hand. I think if this book shed the horror label and stuck with mystery/thriller and paranormal the readership would increase. So please don’t let that label throw you. This is a magnificently done novel. It released last year in English and the French version is out now or soon. Please add this to your tbr! Perfect for spooky season (but not in a scary way)!

⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Lovers of spooky old house mysteries would love this book.

If you loved Mexican Gothic you would love this!

Favorite quote from the book: “Relax, Reflect, Release.”

I genuinely curious but often confused while reading this.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this but finished the book not really understanding what happened.

That being said the book was thought provoking, spooky, and a bit of a thriller. I had a dozen theories; all of them wrong. All of the characters were suspect. It was a wild ride.

I’ve given it a 3 star rating not because I didn’t enjoy it but because the ending was really unresolved in my opinion. Or at least it felt that way because I have no clue what happened. I was completely and utterly confused.

This book was a very quick, easy read. A combination of thriller, mystery and paranormal, The book follows Eve and her twin sister at a mysterious island house the continuously changes. A strange cast of characters are woven through the book. I found the book slow at the start but increased my interest as I went along. I did not expect the ending! 3.5 out of 5 ⭐️

This one started out with such good spooky vibes I was immediately drawn in. I will admit I was pretty sure I had figured out the "twist" pretty early on but I was pleasantly surprised that I was wrong! I loved the drama and the feeling of "waiting on the other shoe to drop" - the book was addictive and I couldn't wait to find out what was going to happen!

Eerie story of Eve, who has appeared on a strange island for a retreat. As she attempts to retrieve her memories, strange ghostly things happen around her. She meets odd characters and tries to work it all out.
Totally different novel and takes some working out. Perfect for paranormal fans.

This book had a lot that intrigued me - love the atmospheric setting and I thought the mirror twin thing was pretty cool. The story was confusing and it took me a while to get into it. I'm also not much for paranormal fiction so I think this probably wasn't the right fit for me. Because of that it just wasn't something that I enjoyed or really got into - it did take a while for me to finish it. The mystery was good - I am always here for a good twist so that was enjoyable.

Publisher: BooksGoSocial
Genre: Mystery Thriller.
Pub Date: March 16, 2021 ~ Archive Date October 5, 2022
My Rating: 3.4 Stars

Eve Beckett is afraid of water, so how did she end up on an island in the Lakeview Manor.
A memory comes to her that she is on a retreat. The words ~ relax, reflect and release ~ haunt her. Eve loves mysteries and the Lakeview Manor is old and seems to be an invitation to explore.
Next a mysterious woman appears but only Eve can see . . .

When Eve’s mirror twin shows up, also with no memory of how she arrived on the island, and the manager of the property warns them away from his brother—one Eve has no wish to avoid—the number of mysteries surrounding Lakeview becomes too much. As she learns more about the manor and its inhabitants, the question becomes not just how, but if Eve will ever leave the island.
I am a big psychological thriller fan LOVE the twist and turns. In fact, I love to try to figure them! However, this story was truly a mystery to me ~ I had such difficulties trying to figure out the plot.
This was a bit of a struggle for me I honestly was ready to move on ~ I have several other books I really want to read but this one had a hold on me.
(At times I thought this was similar to "We Were Liars" by E. Lockhart. I remember that was on an island and there secrets and lies.)
When I finally finished I stared into space and then read the author’s acknowledgements. This is something I love to read as I enjoying knowing the author’s inspiration in writing the story.
The first thing [author: Holly Hill Mangin] states ~ There were times, she thought she would never make it to the acknowledgment page~ I busted out laughing as I certainly had the same thought!!

Want to thank NetGalley and BooksGoSocial for this e Galley.
