An overall entertaining book, and although it didn’t end up completely wowing me it was still a fun popcorn thriller.
This one was filled with odd scenarios and poor decisions that left me shaking my head at some of the characters. I wasn’t super attached to any of them and found myself not fully invested in what happened to them. They made unrealistic choices and were a bit too far fetched for me.
I did enjoy the twist at the end, a nice way to wrap this one up and keep it on my mind. It was well written and fast paced, definitely something to check out for a quick thrill!
I wanted this book to be better than it was. I think reviews from others made my expectations too high. I do plan to come back and reread it.
2/5 stars for now
Writer and social media darling, Jeneva Rose is back with another book that solidifies her in the mainstream book world.
You Shouldn’t Have Come is a popcorn thriller that is a quick read with an easy tempo to keep readers engaged. Kinda perfect for a hazy lazy summer evening.
Thank you to NetGalley and Blackstone for the digital ARC.
This one is a bit different: part spicy romance, part thriller. New Yorker Grace visits Wyoming and stays in an Air BnB hosted by Calvin. The sparks start to fly between them, but there’s also some creepy “something is not right here”vibes.
You Shouldn’t Have Come Here moved very slowly at the beginning. The rather predictable action didn’t start until the last 20% or so. This is not one you need to prioritize.
Well, Jeneva Rose, this was a good one. I've enjoyed all of her books, and this one didn't disappoint either. There was always that lingering question of "what the hell is in the basement?" and I liked sticking around for the ride and the answer. Jeneva's main characters always intrigue me, and there's always that fun twist at the end which always makes the read worth the wait. Another good one, Jeneva! Hi Scott if you're reading this!
And, I shouldn't have read this book! This is a departure from my usual genre as "stabby books" tend to bother me. I AM proud to say I figured it out and the ending. Wow. The ending still has me thinking about what's going to happen next. If you want something to keep you up at night, this is your title!
This is my first Jeneva Rose, even though I have at least one other on my TBR. I wasn't a fan of this book. It was such an incredibly slow burn, yet it didn't have an excess of descriptive language. It focused more on repeating the day to day things of each day....over and over again. Originally I thought that it was a literary device so that when something spooky happened it would really shock the reader....but all events were told in the same perfunctory way. The style of writing just isn't for me. After all of that slow burn, I wanted a big ending, and I just didn't get what I wanted.
You Shouldn't Have Come Here was a DNF for me and I rarely DNF. The characters weren't developed at all. The bad writing got in the way of any plot points. I grew exceedingly tired of reading about her "blue, blue eyes" and of her "turning on her foot." I'm not sure who was lazier: the author, the early readers, or the editor? I assumed this was a debut novel and was shocked to learn that this is an established author. That makes it worse! I feel really bad for the author's dad who the book was dedicated to. She must really hate that guy.
This one really took a turn from what I was expecting. It turned out to be more romance (or maybe the chase before the romance) than a suspenseful book. I was such a fan of the perfect marriage, but this one wasn't for me. I'd still be interested in the next thriller she writes.
Grace and Calvin, Calvin and Grace! What the hell! This is impossible to review without spoilers!
I loved Jeneva’s trademark twists and her ability to reel me in within a few chapters. You Shouldn’t Have Come Here is tense, insidious, and suspenseful with a plot twist to end all plot twists. Mind. Blown.
I’ll think twice before booking a solo trip to Wyoming …. or will I? Insert sinister laugh …..
Thank you @BlackstonePublishing for this gifted copy and to Jeneva Rose for always keeping me on my toes!
Calling this book a thriller is a bit of a stretch. Actually, it’s a lot of a stretch. It reads like an odd mix of romance and campy horror. If it were a movie in the 80s it would’ve been panned.
Jeneva Rose became one of my favorite authors with her book the perfect marriage, so I was insanely excited to receive the arc for You Shouldn’t Have Come Here. The premise is an Airbnb in a small town in the middle of nowhere. The sexual tension between the main character and the owner of the house is noticeable from the get go. I felt like this book had a ton of potential, but the twist at the end did not feel believable to the characters. Which is why I’m giving it 3 stars.
This was so well written. I was engrossed from the first page and it ticked all the boxes of my expectations. The character development was excellent. I would definitely recommend to others, a must read!
This was such a great thriller! I went in blind so I was a little surprised how much romance was involved but I didn’t mind it at all. It was fast-paced, unsettling and that ending was pretty satisfying even if it was a little predictable and still left me with a few questions.
I love Jeneva Rose, but this book fell a little flat for me. It was more romance than thriller but I didn’t feel like the romance actually grew at all. The twist at the end was bleh and it was a tough one to slog through!
This was fast paced and twisty. It felt like i was watching a movie and I LOVE books like that. I have so many questions about the ending though!
This book has promise. With a little more depth and action, this could’ve been more exciting. The end had nice little moments that helped, but overall just little too slow moving and paced. Felt rather predictable but I did enjoy the direction and the end. Was an easy and quick read over all.
Thank you to Blackstone Publishing for my copy! I finished this one in a day! I love Jeneva Rose’s books so she’s an author I will drop everything for to read ASAP. This was mostly a slow burn until the end. Im a fan of slow burns and I found it entertaining enough to speed through it. I was able to figure out the big twist, as there were some bread crumbs along the way. Some parts were a little eye role inducing, some were a little horrific, but overall I stayed entertained throughout. Recommended if you are a fan of this author! Def pick this one up when it releases in April!
I have loved Jeneva's books in the past, but this one had a lot of issues for me. It felt more like a romance at times than a thriller. This one felt like she threw a lot of different ideas that weren't related onto sticky notes that came into her head and then forced them all into one novel.
Here's some of the issues I had:
The back and forth between questioning his behaviors and then being all into him. I get going through this process once or twice...but I lost count how many times it happened and it just made Grace seem all over the place. She was obviously lying about who she was and playing mind games with him, but it felt almost like two completely different characters at times. Calvin's obsession and Grace's hot and cold actions could have been built slower throughout the novel and it would have felt more believable.
One line that stuck with me because it sounded utterly ridiculous was, "She was everything and she was nothing, Which made her the perfect amount of something." WHAT? Moving on.
It would have made more sense if in the end Grace was connected to the missing girl somehow and had hunted him down in order to either avenge her death or save her from this psychopath Calvin...but the ending was just dumb. So is she now going to raise her daughter to be an Airbnb host murderer?
I'm supposed to believe that literally an entire town of people are bat shit crazy? Or helping hide the fact that Calvin is a serial killer? Calvin/Charlotte/Joe/Uncle Albert/Betty...all nuts. It was too much.
The amount of times he talked about her eyes being blue. We get it.
This is one of the best thrillers I have read in a very long time! It kept me guessing and was impossible to put down!
