This is not my favourite middle grade text. The narrator is a parent, which would be hard for children to relate to and connect with. The vocabulary is fairly high level, for example, words like emerged, sullen and credible. There is quite a bit of text on a page and there are some illustrations. The book is also quite long for a middle grade audience, at almost 300 pages, I think it would be too lengthy for many children in this age range. As a Grade3/4 teacher I do not think I would purchase a copy for my classroom library. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for giving me the chance to read and review this book.

What a delightful book. It took us a while to read it as my Grandaughter insisted on forensically studying ever one of the delightful illustrations. They do add much to the book. I can understand what the author says about the main voice being that of the Mother but once you get used to that it really does work. It made me think much about listening more carefully to children. My grandaughter immediately wanted for me to read it again which is always the sign of a good book. She also started cleaning and tidying her bedroom so I think she may be fairy hunting.
