What a wonderfully written book! It's a beautiful story of second chances, and mystery. I loved how the author brought the book to life with her words and made you feel like you were there. I loved it!
I received a complimentary copy from BooksGoSocial via Nergalley and was not required to write a review. All opinions expressed are my own.

This was a lovely story by a new-to-me author. I enjoyed the the historical aspect and the details and descriptions were well done, really transporting me back into the time period of the construction of the transcontinental railroad. Julian and Mariah were wonderful, passionate characters and they were well portrayed. The story was full of depth and emotion, heartbreak, and love and captured my attention from start to finish, and I became engrossed completely. The storyline flowed nicely and the plot twists kept me interested and turning the pages. The writing was creative and smooth, and the author did a good job of capturing the life and turmoil during the days of the western expansion. A very nice introduction for me to a new author!

As our country is working hard to remove women's rights, this is a timely story. It doesn't matter how rich or poor the family is when a woman married. Mariah thought she was marrying for love. Yet she finds herself in a wagon train headed west. Her husband is no help and rarely seen. How did so much of her life go wrong? As the story unfolds the true nature of people around Mariah begin to unravel. A rather sad story but a good ending. So glad I live now instead of the days and times of the book.

I just reviewed The Winds of Autumn by Susan Rounds. #TheWindsofAutumn #NetGalley

Beautiful cover and that’s what attracted me.

If you like romance novels set in St Louis during the American war then this book is definitely for you.

The cover is very reminiscent of the old Mills & Boon or Barbara Cartland books so, if you liked those, this will be for you.

Just finished reading this book—it was somewhat fulfilling, but left parts of the story with unanswered questions.. Like what happened to Dr. Riddler and Annabelle?
The parts of the book that cover the harsh realities of traveling with the wagon train were good and appreciated the text regarding the hardships that Mariah had to face along that journey West.
I was disappointed, however, in the way Nathan's character was handled. His story begins with a heartbreaking/horrific experience for his mother, so given the circumstances of his birth, there seems that there should have been so much more to his story. Somehow a redemption regarding his actions, especially toward Mariah. While I was pleased with Mariah finding happiness, I rather wish it could have been with Nathan. All in all, this story was filled with so much good storyline and descriptive passages, but I just wish it could have been more. (I was given a copy of this book from NetGalley for my honest opinion.)

Readers who enjoy historical romance will enjoy this book. Set post Civil War, Mariah eagerly weds Nathan not knowing the plans he's made. Nathan's true character comes out as they set out west for his new Army post. Julian, working with the transcontinental railroad is immediately attracted to Mariah upon meeting her. Vowed to keep Mariah safe, Julian follows the couple out west. Interesting story but not as believable as other historical fiction books.

this was a beautifully done historical romance novel, it had what I was hoping for when I read the description. It had a great plot going on and did what I was hoping for. The characters were really well done and did everything that I was hoping for. Susan Rounds does a great job in telling a story and has a great writing style. I can't wait to read more from the author.

"This was not the time to concede defeat, but to spit in the face of death like he did countless times during the war. He cut down enough Confederates to know the white man’s poison coursing through his veins bled out of every Rebel he massacred on the battlefield. If he had the chance, he would’ve cut down every Yank just the same."
