A captivating love story transcending the American West, where secrets hide unknown consequences and true love fights for a second chance.
At the end of the War of the Rebellion, Mariah Renwick is still haunted by the memory of her late sister as she tries to piece together the remnants of an innocent time lost. All she wants is to bring happiness home again. Then dashing Lieutenant Nathan Lawton rushes into her life and becomes her new husband. But Nathan’s dark and tormented past hides revenge and betrayal as he stakes his claim to the Renwick fortune and his future out West.
Railroad magnate, Julian Marquette, has just returned to St. Louis to secure another bank loan from Mariah’s father. A brilliant mastermind, Julian orchestrates the construction of the Transcontinental Railroad, not for the sake of his own vanity but for the people of America. He’s a man borne of conviction for what he believes in, a passionate man who’s secretly been in love with Mariah since he first saw her two years ago. But now it’s too late . . . until an intimate moment together takes them by storm.
“It was there again, in that infinitesimal space between them, the subtle tremor of attraction, at once forbidden but about to collide.”
Torn between desire and duty, Mariah is caught in a crossfire as she faces unimaginable struggles on an epic westward journey that shows no mercy. Can Julian fight against impossible odds for the woman he loves, or is all hope lost?
Sweeping landscapes. Passionate characters. The consummate gentleman is back.

this was a beautifully done historical romance novel, it had what I was hoping for when I read the description. It had a great plot going on and did what I was hoping for. The characters were really well done and did everything that I was hoping for. Susan Rounds does a great job in telling a story and has a great writing style. I can't wait to read more from the author.
"This was not the time to concede defeat, but to spit in the face of death like he did countless times during the war. He cut down enough Confederates to know the white man’s poison coursing through his veins bled out of every Rebel he massacred on the battlefield. If he had the chance, he would’ve cut down every Yank just the same."
Excellent read! This storyline had me glued to the pages from the very first page, to the very last! Susan Rounds really knows how to tell a story!.
This new to me author really had me turning the pages!
I loved every minute of this book! I didn't want to put it down until the end!
2nd chances, secrets, mystery what's not to love about this book!
The descriptions of the places in this story are wonderful! The author has done an excellent job in making me feel like I was a part of their lives.
My heart was definitely well satisfied.
5 stars for a job well written novel.
My thanks for a copy of this book. I was NOT required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.
I found The Winds of Autumn by Susan Rounds to be just like the cover - vivid and beautiful. I am giving it five stars.
As our country is working hard to remove women's rights, this is a timely story. It doesn't matter how rich or poor the family is when a woman married. Mariah thought she was marrying for love. Yet she finds herself in a wagon train headed west. Her husband is no help and rarely seen. How did so much of her life go wrong? As the story unfolds the true nature of people around Mariah begin to unravel. A rather sad story but a good ending. So glad I live now instead of the days and times of the book.
This was a lovely story by a new-to-me author. I enjoyed the the historical aspect and the details and descriptions were well done, really transporting me back into the time period of the construction of the transcontinental railroad. Julian and Mariah were wonderful, passionate characters and they were well portrayed. The story was full of depth and emotion, heartbreak, and love and captured my attention from start to finish, and I became engrossed completely. The storyline flowed nicely and the plot twists kept me interested and turning the pages. The writing was creative and smooth, and the author did a good job of capturing the life and turmoil during the days of the western expansion. A very nice introduction for me to a new author!
