This is one of the most beautiful and complete baking books there is. Mary Berry provides a great overview of equipment, ingredients and techniques that will apply not just to the recipes in the book but all baking. Written in the calming and loving style that Mary Berry fans will recognize from Bake Off, this cookbook brings the reader along on a ride through the entire world of baking.

The recipes are all very well written and easy to follow, with suggestions, alternatives and tips. The amount of variety of recipes is amazing. Most cookbooks like this only cover a small selection of recipes in each style (cake, bread, etc.), or they cover a lot of recipes from one style. This cookbook is truly as it is advertised, a Baking Bible. If you had to buy only one cookbook for baking this should be the one.

The only issue with this cookbook, is that the photos are so mouth watering, you want to bake them all!

Anyone who has watched Mary Berry on TV knows that she is one talented baker. She has been at it for longer than many readers have even been alive. Plus, Ms. Berry makes it look so doable. All fans of Mary will be thrilled to see that a new edition of her Baking Bible is being published in May.

Inside this beautifully illustrated book are over 250 recipes. Some of the categories covered are classic cakes, celebration cakes, baking for children, tarts and pastries, buns and scones, and many others. Just a few of the recipes are those for a chocolate mirror cake, an amazing castle cake that a child is sure to love, and orange and chocolate fork shortbread cookies. At over 400 pages, this book has enough recipes for a lifetime.

Also included at the beginning of the book is a great deal of helpful formation. Read about equipment, baking terminology, ingredients, tips, and conversion tables and then get to work.

Looking for a Mother’s Day or other occasion gift, even a gift ot one’s self? Keep this in mind. It is terrific.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Clarkson Potter/Ten Speed Press for this title. All opinions are my own.

Mary Berry's Baking Bible is a revised and updated version of the classic Baking Bible by the GBBS judge and TV personality Mary Berry herself. Originally released in 2009, this second edition reformat and re-release is due out 9th May 2023 from Penguin Random House on their Clarkson Potter imprint. It's 416 pages and will be available in hardcover and ebook formats.

This is a massive and comprehensive resource for bakers. The information is accessible to a wide variety of readers, but -also- includes useful advanced info which will be of interest even to advanced bakers, such as understandable tutorials for tempering chocolate. Chapters are arranged thematically: classic cakes, spiced cakes, chocolate treats, cupcakes, celebrations, special cakes, sheet cakes, for children, crackers & cookies, fancy cookies, tarts & pastries, breads, fruit loaves, buns & scones, puddings & pies, soufflés & meringues, and cheesecakes. There is quite literally something for every imaginable occasion in this weighty tome.

Recipes are written with an introduction/description, bullet list of ingredients in a sidebar, and followed by step-by-step cooking instructions. Ingredients are written with both imperial (American) and metric measures (yay!). Although the results are amazingly attractive and beautifully presented, the instructions are simple and understandable.

The photography throughout is outstanding; dishes are styled attractively and professionally. I liked having serving suggestions and the photos enhanced the read very much.

Five stars. Readers who have the first edition (2009) of this book would do well to compare to see how much updated content there is, otherwise it should be a staple of the home baker's library. Highly recommended for public/school library acquisition, home use, housewarming, or other gift giving.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

Great recipes and pictures from the legend that is Mary Berry.
I would have loved a section on substitutions. Like what could I use if I run out of eggs for example.
I enjoyed reading the recipes and have a few picked out to try on my family at our next morning tea.
I received a copy via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

Mary Berry's Baking Bible: Revised and Updated is much more than just a recipe book; this is a comprehensive manual for beginners and experienced bakers alike.
The book begins with an introduction to Mary Berry's new book, followed by several pages dedicated to explaining baking terminology, detailing the use of baking equipment, listing key ingredients and their uses, and sharing tips and tricks.
The recipe section includes classic cakes, spiced cakes, fruity cakes, small baked goods, pies, tarts, cheesecakes, puddings, soufflés and meringues, breads and crackers. The recipes are very detailed and include possible substitutions and variations. There are many beautiful coloured pictures of finished products.
My only complaint would be that not all recipes include a picture, and some recipes that don't include a picture are quite elaborate.
This book would make a wonderful gift!

My thanks to the author, Mary Berry, the publisher, Clarkson Potter, and Netgalley for the ARC.

Mary Berry was my favorite baker on Great British Bake Off and you can see why she is so revered for her recipes and general baking prowess.

I read a lot of cookbooks and I am known to be a bit critical, so when I say that her recipes are perfect I really mean it.

She has detailed instructions and she explains when you can or can't substitute.

There are great recipes for some old favorites and some great new items that as an American I can't' wait to try.

I think there is a nice blend of recipes for things that inexperienced bakers could make like shortbread or more experienced chefs hoping to expand their baking repertoire with mirror glazes and passion fruit curd.

This book is a keeper.

I enjoyed this cookbook. The pictures are wonderful, and the recipes are easy to follow. I enjoy the way in which the recipes are broken down in to their respective chapters.

Mary Berry's Baking Bible: Revised and Updated by Mary Berry

Baking legend Mary Berry, longtime judge of The Great British Baking Show, presents this revised and updated edition of her seminal baking book, featuring 250 recipes, including 20 all-new bakes, updated photography, and Americanized measurements.

This cookbook includes many classic recipes with clear instructions and starts off with a section of terms, techniques and conversion tables. These recipes are a step above beginner level, but the instructions are very easy to follow. I only wish there were pictures of all recipes.

Thank you to Netgalley and Clarkson Potter for a free copy of Mary Berry's Baking Bible: Revised and Updated for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions in this review are my own. #NetGalley

Mary Berry is the baking queen. I loved seeing how many recipes she used in this book that I have seen in episodes of Great British Bake Off. The tips at the beginning are also very helpful for novice bakers.

Thank you to Netgalley for a copy of this title to review.

I confess to being a Great British Bake Off fan. I was very excited to take a look at this cook book and I will give an honest an opinion as I can.

The book has an extensive amount of recipes, over 250,, there are 17 chapters, there are 5 chapters on cakes not including the one on cupcakes and the other on cheesecakes. but the book also starts with Baking Equipment, Baking terminology, Key Ingredients, Baking Tips, and Conversion Tables.

As a home baker in Canada while I appreciated the thought with the Maple Syrup Cake, although I question the use of actual maple syrup when extract would probably come through more.
There are very British recipes that you don't find in most North American cookbooks like English Muffins and Eccles Cakes. that I'm very interested in. If I had to make a comment about variations on taste and how that might effect whether someone should purchase this book or not I would warn them that a lost of these recipes do contain raisins and currants and as a baker I know of no other topic that is more polarizing where I am then of the inclusion of raisins in baking..
The pictures are beautiful and the recipes and instructions very clear. If you love cakes and don't mind raisins this book is definitely for you.

Author Mary Berry’s revised and updated, MARY BERRY’S BAKING BIBLE, is a comprehensive guide of just about anything you need to know about baking.

Before you ever get to recipes, 31 informative pages covering the introduction, techniques, and conversion tables, will testify to the knowledge Ms. Berry has amassed on the subject and science of baking.

Recipes (as seen on cover blurb) include . . .
• Cakes: Victoria Sandwich; Very Best Chocolate Fudge; Lemon Yogurt
• Cookies and Bars: Melting Moments; Orange and Chocolate Shortbread; Bakewell Slices
• Traybakes: Lemon Drizzle; Coffee and Walnut; Double Chocolate Chip and Marshmallow
• Tarts and Pastries: French Apple Tart; Chocolate Eclairs; Profiteroles
• Breads: Crunchy Orange Syrup Loaf; Quick Sourdough Loaf; White Cottage Loaf
• Puddings and Pies: Sticky Apricot Pudding; Classic Apple Pie; Crème Brûlée
• Cheesecakes: American Chocolate Ripple; Buttermilk and Honey; and Key Lime Pie

Those are only a small sampling of the 250 recipes included.

Overall, I really enjoyed getting lost in the pages of, MARY BERRY’S BAKING BIBLE.

As is my main complaint with most cookbooks, there isn’t a photo for every recipe. I really want to see the finished product. I want to be able to compare my finished recipe to the one in the book. Having said all that, the photos included are stunning color photos that had my mouth watering.

Rather you are an aspiring baker, or already accomplished in the art, MARY BERRY’S BAKING BIBLE is one to add to your collection.

I received an advance copy via NetGalley.

I adore Mary Berry. I loved her when she was on the Great British Bake Off, and I have a previous cookbook of hers as well. This republication of one of her classic cookbooks incorporates American measures and includes recommendations for swaps for British ingredients, such as light corn syrup for golden syrup.

I was thrilled to get an early chance at this cookbook. I will say straight-up that this is not a one for beginners, nor is it organized to be approachable for beginners. After an introduction loaded with baking advice and equipment explanations, the very first recipe is a British standard, a Victoria Sandwich. The book overall feels cake-heavy, but there's a wide range of complication involved. To put it in Bake Off terms, many of the recipes tend toward Show Stoppers, with a number also presenting a Technical Challenge. Not that this is a bad thing. The variety here looks incredible, and I'd volunteer to taste test pretty much everything.

Some of the recipes that I most want to make are Crunchy Top Lemon Cake, Special Shortbread Cookies, Millionaire Shortbread (probably one of my all-time favorite desserts), and Bakewell Slices.

My biggest criticism of the book is that maybe only half of the recipes have photographs. More than one recipe I found intriguing but I really wanted to see it to know if it truly was of interest. Alas.

I still find this a solid cookbook for someone who loves Bake Off, Mary Berry, and wants to challenge themselves with recipes from one of the great bakers of the modern era.

I love Mary Berry! Like many Americans, my first introduction to Ms. Berry was on The Great British Bake Off. I sought out her cookbooks then, but really struggled to get through the recipes. Mary Berry's Baking Bible: Revised and Updated is great. There are tips and tricks, and simple to follow instructions. I would say that this is a great book for those who have been baking a while, but maybe want to try some more classic European cakes and desserts. Before writing my review I wanted to make at least one recipe, and my son and I chose the Chocolate Roulade. I was a tad concerned the whipped cream filling would be too much, but it was actually perfect. The cake itself was not too sweet. I think there is a bit of flexibility in the recipes, and an experienced baker can put their own touch on it. I look forward to getting a hard cover copy when it is published.
