This may be my favorite installment yet. Honestly, the mystery itself may not be as compelling as in the prior books, but the characters are just deliciously well done.

Another addition featuring Mr. Darcy (the younger) and Miss Tilney. They are involved to solve a murder that has not happened yet. Mr. Darcy's aunt, the imperious Catherine de Bourgh, has had her life threatened in several incidents, all unsuccessful so far. Many suspects and the amusing dance between the Darcy family and the Tilney family makes this and enjoyable novel.

This book is wonderful, and I hope there will be another in the series! I am looking forward to reading some other of Claudia Gray’s works.

The Perils of Lady Catherine de Bourgh is the third installment of the Mr. Darcy & Miss Tilney mysteries. Taking place at Rosings, Mr. Darcy and Miss Tilney are summoned to uncover the mystery of the many assassination attempts made against Lady Catherine de Bourgh.

Austen fans and fans of this series are both treated to a whodunnit that will keep you guessing and glimpse of the future for their favorite characters.

Although The Perils.. is the third of the series, this can be read as a standalone which is a great benefit if you are like me and this is the first.

Thank you to Netgalley for this opportunity.

Are you a fan of Jane Austen? Do you enjoy a murder mystery? If you answered yes to these questions, put The Perils of Lady Catherine de Bourgh on your reading list! This delightful novel is the third in a series featuring young sleuths Juliet Tilney, who currently resides on her grandfather’s estate, Northanger Abbey, and Jonathan Darcy, son of Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet from Pride and Prejudice. After solving two murders in the first two installments of the Mr. Darcy and Miss Tilney Mystery Series, the two amateur detectives are enlisted to prevent the murder of Lady Catherine de Bourgh who has been nearly shot, poisoned, and pushed down the stairs.

Juliet and Jonathan report to Rosings with their fathers in tow, confronting a long list of suspects including William and Charlotte Collins (also of Pride and Prejudice fame). The investigators unravel a complex set of clues while discovering their own deepening feelings for one another which are met with opposition by their respective fathers. Elizabeth Darcy makes a late appearance on the estate, reuniting with her former friend Charlotte and helping to smooth the tensions between the Darcy and Tilney families.

Claudia Gray has created two engaging protagonists in her mystery series. The novel opens with Juliet plunging knives into spare meat in the kitchens, hoping to learn how to identify the different cuts of various murder weapons. She looks forward to the thrill of investigating to relieve her of the boredom of piano lessons and polite society. Jonathan is a neurodivergent character who sees the world through a unique lens and must use a “curtain” to obscure his peculiarities. The two sleuths turn their personality quirks into strengths, using their keen observational skills to save the day and move toward a potential relationship which will no doubt be fully explored in future installments of the series.

This was the first book in the series that I read, and I plan to go back and enjoy the first two as well. Fans who long to learn more about their favorite characters from Jane Austen’s world will find much to love in these pages!

Thank you to NetGalley for a free copy of the book in exchange for a fair review.

This was another great addition to Gray's Mr. Darcy & Miss Tilney series. It was fun to see beloved characters from Pride & Prejudice, although I was a bit disappointed Lizzie didn't get as much attention compared to characters like Anne de Bourgh and Charlotte. However, getting to know those characters, their lives, and their motivations through Gray's worldbuilding was fascinating. The characters felt like extensions of Austen's originals, which was impressive and lovely. I wasn't as invested in this would-be whodunnit as the two previous books, and the slow burn was getting a little tiresome, even if I understand why Gray chose to do it that way. I'm so excited for any future books in this series, and I know they will be instant buys. Another great Austen mystery by Gray!

While I enjoyed this, I do think it was a bit of a downtrend coming off the very good second book. Other reviewers have said that the romantic pacing between the MCs slowed down a lot and I agree - I am all for slow burn historical mystery but I would have liked a bit more romance building in this one. I’m curious about how the next one goes with where this leaves off though.

The mystery itself was good and I would have given it a 4 star if 1) the villain had t been so easy to predict (especially since I didn’t guess the villains for the previous books), 2) we barely spend any time with the villain so the payoff isn’t as good, and 3) the excitement wasn’t so lost with no one being dead and the leads being allowed to investigate openly. Many of the things that made book 1 and 2 extra fun were missing here.

I did enjoy getting to see Darcy and Tilney play off each other and kind of wish there was more of it. Also enjoyed the changes in Charlotte and Lizzie’s friendship being explored, and the unexpected HEA for Anne and Fitzwilliam.

I didn’t really buy the Lady Catherine being so good to Deb piece of things - kind of a disability pipe dream - but it was redeeming at least.

Still excited for book 4 but ready for it to be a little saucier overall!

This was such a an enjoyable read! Gray kept Austen's characters close to their originals, with believable growth that may have happened over time, while introducing new characters that are such fun! I found this to be a light, enjoyable read, perfect for anyone who loves Jane Austen AND a good mystery!

My only complaints: the story moved a bit slow. New clues for the mystery Juliet and Jonathan were solving seemed to come slowly. And also....I was ready for our two main characters to make a bit more progress in their relationship in this
book!

What I'm looking forward to: The ending of this book indicates that the fourth installment is probably going to take place at Pemberley! So I'm very excited about that!

I received a free copy of this book from NatGalley, all opinions are my own!

Another “murder” mystery for Mr Jonathan Darcy and Miss Juliet Tilney to solve. This time it’s to stop a murder before it happens when Lady Catherine de Bourgh summons you, you go.

Another delightful tale in Austenaland. I love these books and am just waiting for Jonathan and Juliet to get it together! What else brings people together more than solving crimes?

A good mystery with familiar characters for any Austen fan.

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC.

The third in a series of mysteries based in the world of Jane Austen, The Perils of Lady Catherine de Bourgh did not disappoint.

Jonathan Darcy and Juliet Tilney are summoned to Rosings Park, the home of the illustrious Lady Catherine de Bourgh. She has heard of their crime-solving escapades, and while she disapproves, she finds herself in need of their services. Someone is trying to kill her, and it is all getting quite annoying. This time, the pair are joined by their fathers (Mr. Darcy to offer support to his aunt, and Mr. Tilney to chaperone his daughter), who take an immediate dislike to each other. Everyone in Rosings seems to be keeping secrets- Lady Catherine's daughter, Anne, Anne's distant husband, Colonel Fitzwilliam, and the Collins family, who are at Rosings more often than not. The arrival of the amateur detectives doesn't seem to deter the would-be murderer, either.

I enjoyed playing in the world of Jane Austen once again, and the mystery was compelling, if a little slow at times. I didn't guess the murderer until about halfway through, which is pretty good for me. The characters are well-written, and their interactions enjoyable to watch. The ending left us on a bit of a cliffhanger, so I certainly hope we will see more of these books.

I love Jane Austen and it’s always enjoyable to me to revisit these characters but in a different light. This was absolutely delightful. I love the fun mystery element, I highly recommend this fun and quick read!

I've been waiting for the third installment in the Juliet Tilney and Jonathan Darcy series since I finished reading the second one last summer! The Perils of Lady Catherine de Bourgh lived up to my anticipation, featuring a prevented murder and a bit of progress on the budding romance between the detectives. I love that Claudia Gray is creating new Austen-adjacent literature, to help us get our Austen fix! I already cannot wait for the fourth book to launch.

Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC.

It's 1821 and Lady Catherine de Bourgh summons her nephew's son, Jonathan Darcy from Pemberly along with Juliet Tilney of Gloucestershire, to investigate the attempts on her life at Rosing's Park. She wanted no police involvement and knew that the two young people had successfully solved other mysteries and wanted the culprit found. As they began to investigate the family and servants that resided there, more attacks took place and the attacks were getting more vicious. Jonathan and Juliet had narrowed down the suspects until they both came to the same conclusion.
A delightful historical cozy mystery, the third in the series, in which the adventures that brought them together are sparking more than friendship.
Thank you NetGalley and Vintage for this e-galley of "The Perils of Lady Catherine de Bourgh".

As I read this, I was reminded of Angela Thirkell's continuations of Trollope's Barsetshire, in succeeding generations. Thirkell diligently tried to match style and character as well as setting, carrying forward into succeeding generations. Her Barsetshire didn't quite jive with the Barsetshire that Trollope set up in my head, but they were pleasant reads.

Same here. Gray works hard to emulate the general style of early nineteenth century novels and for the most part succeeds, I think especially for readers who haven't been reading the Real McCoy for over fifty years. The errors are small, like calling pistols "guns" decades before the word for artillery came to include them. She's got a doubly tough job--to construct a mystery on top of carrying Austen's characters forward into their lives. I had to salute her diligence while feeling that this is not the Austen world as I'd picture it. Especially Charlotte Lucas. And I am very aware when Austen's characters are on the page minus Austen's wit.

But hey for alternate universes! The mystery is fun, Henry Tilney is probably my favorite character here, though the elder Darcy son comes second.

Put Austens characters together in a mystery and you get an exciting read.

This was my first book in this series and it was a nice read. There's the mystery, and the hero is also a neurodivergent trying to figure put a way to connect with Juliet who he has not seen for over a year.

Looking forward to the next and have to catch up on the previous 2 books.

I received this book free from the publisher but the reviews and opinions are strictly my own.
This is my first time reading Mr. Darcy and Miss Tilney series.
I very much enjoyed the characters and the story line. Not a fan of Lady Catherine but I think that's the main point.
Good interactions with Miss Tilney and Mr. Darcy as young people in this Era. I like that she is way outside of her gender role and expectations.

Best of the series so far. I really enjoy both Jonathan Darcy and - especially - Juliet Tilney. I also appreciate reading a classic mystery set against an Austenien backdrop. Looking forward very much to book 4.

Once again, Claudia Grey delights a hardcore Janeite with another installment in the charming Mr. Darcy and Miss Tilney series. The Jane Austen pastiche category is crowded, but these books stand out with their sweetness, wit, and humor.

Once again, Jonathan Darcey and Juliet Tinley, children of the the couples from Pride and Prejudice and Northanger Abbey, are paired up in an investigation. This time, they've been summoned by Lady Catherine de Bourgh to discover who is trying to kill her. Juliet is accompanied from her father, Henry, who is present for the first time in this series. Jonathan is with his parents. The Collins play a major role (Mr. Collins is as hilariously annoying as ever), as does Lady Catherine's daughter Anne and her husband. Seeing so many Pride and Prejudice characters together was delightful. Seeing the affable Henry dealing with the more reserved Darcy was entertaining, as well.

Jonathan and Juliet are dealing with some miscommunication resulting from the end of their last investigation and Jonanthan's attempts to hid his "unusual" behaviors. His neurodivergence has been obvious to modern readers throughout the series. It's wonderful to see Juliet miss those qualities when Jonathan tries to hide them. They are an incredibly sweet couple, though they aren't really a couple just yet (maybe in the next book?).

The writing is in the Austen style, though the pace is a touch faster than in the original novels. I recently finished Northanger Abbey, Persuasion, and Emma, so I was ready for this. I also reread the first two books in the series before reading this early edition. While it's not necessary, it definitely makes the relationship moments more enjoyable. I have a feeling I'll want to revisit the final version when it's available.

This book and this series is so enjoyable! You will love this is you are craving a mystery and a visit into the Jane Austen universe. I think that this will be especially fun for readers who are already familiar with this series, but could easily be picked up and enjoyed as a stand-alone.

One of the things I especially appreciate is the author’s ability to capture the familiarity of the characters, as well as the flavor of the actual books where they were introduced by Austen, in a way that seems natural and fresh. I cannot wait for the next book in this series. This one gets bonus points for the setup of a seemingly future romance between the young sleuths Mr. Darcy and Miss Tilney. I am practically screaming with excitement. Not only is this a continuation of what I think of as the “Austen Universe,” but the next generation has been incorporated brilliantly. This is truly like visiting old friends. I highly recommend this book and this series.

I love cozy mysteries, and I love Jane Austen, so this series is a home run for me. The third installment finds us at Rosings Park, where Juliet Tilney and Jonathan Darcy meet Lady Catherine de Bourgh. I thought the story was carefully researched, and the mystery well plotted. I especially appreciated Gray's portrayal of Lady Catherine and the sympathy she displays for all her characters. This was a truly enjoyable read!
