In the ever-evolving landscape of technology, Matthieu Dugal’s “Welcome to AI” emerges as a beacon of understanding, illuminating the intricate world of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for readers young and old. This book is not merely a collection of facts and predictions; it is a journey through the history, present, and potential future of AI, presented with clarity and insight.

Dugal’s approach is both educational and engaging, making complex concepts accessible to a younger audience while still offering substantial food for thought for the adult reader. One of the book’s strengths lies in its balanced view of AI. It doesn’t shy away from discussing the potential biases and prejudices that can be perpetuated by AI, reflecting on the importance of mindful development and application of this powerful technology. It prompts readers to consider not just the ‘how’ of AI, but the ‘why’ and the ‘should we,’ fostering critical thinking about the ethical implications of AI in our lives.

“Welcome to AI” is a timely piece, as AI becomes increasingly integrated into our daily lives. It serves as an excellent introduction for those new to the subject and a reflective piece for those already familiar with the domain of AI. A fascinating look at AI with wonderful illustrations and easy to understand text. Geared to middle graders but this adult found it incredibly helpful too. Should be available in every school and public library!

With the rapid adoption Artificial Intelligence in society, people of every age and background need to understand the basics. Yet this learning can feel daunting, especially with titles currently available for adult and technical readers. Welcome to AI introduces AI through interesting and creative narrative, that helps readers develop confidence and knowledge. Beautiful illustrations enhance the reading experience without reducing the appropriateness for more advanced readers. The book creates space for both technical and critical discussions while including enough historical and cultural support for inclusion in early social science courses. Teaching ethical use of AI will soon become normalized across the curriculum. When it does, teachers and parents should absolutely reach for this book.

There is so much in the news about AI, I thought a children’s book might help this 50+ year old better understand Artificial Intelligence. I’m glad that I took the time to read Welcome to AI: What is Artificial Intelligence and how will it change our lives?
by Matthieu Dugal.

The author did a great job of providing a both a bit about computing and also where the technology is heading. And also that AI gleans from the past to create results, but that the human past (with all of its prejudices) may not be what we want to replicate. Pretty eye opening.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group – Wide Eyed Editions for approving my request to read the advance read copy in exchange for an honest review. (As I watch some of this review finish sentences and spell check for me.)

Publication date is June 04, 2024.

The colors in this book are so vibrant and fun. It is hard to recommend a good AI book for the younger generation and I think this one does a great job. Fun and facts all mixed together and it keeps you wanting to turn the page to find out more.

I received an electronic ARC from Quarto Publishing Group – Wide Eyed Editions through NetGalley.
Dugal provides the history for Artificial Intelligence beginning with brief descriptions from early civilizations. From there, readers see how computers have been used and improved to bring us to the current time. The text is shared at a level upper elementary readers will comprehend. It offers a first look at the world of AI in very general terms. The artwork will capture their interest and the text box styles will appeal to readers at this level. This could be a terrific introduction for classes and for families as we all learn more.

This is a colourful and delightfully presented delve into AI. Topic of the time, here is a children’s book that shows the history and future of AI. The artwork supports the enjoyment and discovery available in these pages. Perfectly pitched at the right level for children to understand. Will make a good read at home, but would be perfect for school and public libraries as well. Thank you to Quarto Publishing Group - Wide Eyed Editions and NetGalley for the ARC. The views expressed are all mine, freely given.

I have to be honest and say that this book kinda disappointed me. I had high hopes that it would be more informative but the information there has been done to death in various teaching resources by Twinkl or Teachit. It does not have anything new, except for LOAB which got me googling. After googling it, I would not recommend it to children below UKS2. Even if they are in Y6 already, some may still find it scary. So, if the information contained in it is not that advanced, but that one bit makes it age appropriate to UKS2 / above, then what age should this book aim at?

This is a phenomenally, well-done book that takes readers through the history of AI while making modern day connections, The illustrations are colorful and eye-catching. I will be purchasing this book to add to my collection and using as an anchor text when introducing AI to my students, I feel that having the background and understanding of how far back AI goes and that this is not a "new" technology will help ease fears and misunderstandings of this technology. I also feel this would be a great text for teachers to read to help grasp their understanding of AI. Wonderfully done and highly recommend for purchase.

What a great book about AI. Super easy to read and understand while displaying fun illustrations!
Thank you Net Galley for the opportunity to review in exchange for an honest opinion.

This is a well done primer on AI for maybe a middle grade audience? I was trying to decipher the right age range as I was reading - it's definitely not for super young kids. The concepts are all introductory and cover a wide range of what is being discussed in the AI community at large. I thought over all it introduces a lot of concepts in a way that could pique someone's interest and encourage them to learn more. I also think this book will stand the test of time pretty well - it already covers a lengthy time period to lay the foundation for AI concepts and how they've evolved over time.

The illustrations in this book are colorful and whimsical. They lighten up the reading experience and are engaging to look at while reading the content. I do think there were a few areas that either ended abruptly or didn't totally transition in a way that flowed well. Some sections felt a bit choppy and could have used some connecting tissue to keep the timeline moving. I appreciate what these authors pulled together and the way that they presented the material to hopefully encourage young people to investigate AI more and to understand the role that it plays in our current society as well as the impact that it has globally.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC of this book to read and review. All thoughts are my own!

This is a beautiful book, simple and complex at the same time. Ostensibly for children (although I personally think it will only appeal to certain children), it explores the history of robotics, the philosophy of intelligence, machine learning, important historical figures, and yes, artificial intelligence. I'm not sure what a child could actually learn from it because there are so many different ideas and directions inside. Still, children of different ages might enjoy hearing it read aloud, or reading it themselves, and gleaning from it what interests them. Overall I admire this work for its unapologetic loftiness! It is unique, and nicely written, and beautifully designed.

“Welcome to AI” is a fascinating look at the history of our human desire to create a machine in our own likeness. Author Matthieu Dugal starts with ancient history, moves through the middle ages and early automata, and into modern times using easy-to-understand vignettes. There is enough detail that even adults will be intrigued with this take on the development of artificial intelligence.

The illustrations are colorful and have a retro feel that perfectly complements the text.

I enjoyed this take on artificial intelligence. I’d never really thought about connections between the tools that we have now and, for example, early attempts at mechanized beings.

This book is great for kids (and adults) who are interested in computer science, artificial intelligence and the history of our desire to create a machine in our own likeness.

I received an advance review copy for free from NetGalley and Wide Eyed Editions, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This is a great middle school science book about AI. The illustrations are great at getting your attention and it's so interesting to learn about the important people and events leading to modern times. It was exciting to read about current AI and I was wondering how long it would be before this book will need to be updated because of advances in technology! Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this

I saw this book pop up and I knew I had to read it!

I would say this is appropriate for middle grade and up. I enjoyed reading it as an adult that works on AI projects.

Explains the history of automation, AI and gives context about why, how, when, etc.

I loved the reference to Go - one of my favorite games!

The colors and illustrations are gorgeous.
