I enjoyed reading Some Like it Scot, a delightful romantic comedy set in Scotland. Katie is a jet-setting travel writer and podcaster from North Carolina who lands in Scotland for three weeks. She’s known for her hilarious misadventures and for finding herself in ridiculous situations. Her latest adventure on the Isle of Mull is an opportunity to immerse herself in an Edwardian Experience with Downton Abbey vibes. Katie has Scottish ancestry, courtesy of her late grandfather, and she’s fascinated by Scottish culture.

Graeme is a down-to-earth Scotsman and a talented woodworker. His family is close knit, and he cares for his late twin sister’s young son. Graeme guards his heart after being burned by his ex-fiance who left him to pursue her career goals.

Graeme’s family recently purchased their ancestral Scottish family estate that was sold a century earlier. The upkeep of the property is expensive, and they rent out their grand home for six months to an eccentric English couple who want to create an Edwardian Experience vacation destination.

The meet cute between Katie and Graeme is hilarious. They are from different worlds and Katie isn’t staying in Scotland. Or anywhere. Her work life is like one long vacation and she’s careful to avoid getting close to people or putting down roots. She discovers she can’t outrun her emotional baggage from her childhood and family situation.

I loved the many LOL moments in the story that draw Katie and Graeme closer together. Their romance is sweet and poignant as they deal with challenging situations and past hurts. Sometimes Katie edges close to moving into unreliable narrator territory as she wrestles with deep-seated issues. Graeme is her rock. He sees the real Katie, and her vulnerabilities, which are different from her happy-go-lucky and carefree public persona.

The quirky cast of side characters, and quite a few animals, create a charming Scottish village that I’d love to visit. I recommend Some Like it Scot to contemporary romance readers who like Scottish vacation romcoms with an Edwardian flavour that includes found family themes and a relevant faith element in the story.

Many thanks to Thomas Nelson and NetGalley for the advanced reader copy. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Thank you NetGalley for a copy in exchange for my honest review. I don't know what it is about destination romances, but I just love them especially when they involve a handsome Scot! I enjoyed the banter between Katie and Graeme, the growth of Katie's character finding herself and found family, and the Scottish elements that tie it all together.

A love letter to grief, home and found family. I really enjoyed this arc it follows Katie a travel writer who’s been invited to the Isle of Mull in Scotland for an Edwardian experience for 3 weeks.

When she arrives her usual escapades ensue as she has made her clumsiness and misadventures her business. Writing under the moniker misadventure chaos normally follows Katie no matter where she goes. On her first day at Craig Hill a parrot attacks her throwing her in to arms of rugged and grumpy Scotsman - Graeme. I really enjoyed some of the themes of found family, the search for home and the connection between Graeme and Katie.

I have rated this book 4 Stars I enjoyed the story the setting and wide cast of characters make the story what it is. For me personally I think some of the more religious themes overtook the story but it is a key part of the book however it did work I just would have preferred it sprinkled throughout the story.

I loved the trip I took to Scotland while reading Some Like It Scot. Pepper Basham took me on a literary tour through the bustling streets and shops of the city to the picturesque countryside. Her descriptions of weather, places, people and atmosphere had me feeling immersed in the Country and longing to visit there myself.

The female main character Katie Campbell, is a relatable travel writer and social media influencer. Her travel adventures take her all over the world, but typically Katie encounters some type of mishap and she has turned it into her online persona, “Miss Adventure”. I love how Katie is down to earth, fun and easily able to take different situations in stride. Katie’s struggle with family and setting down roots stem from her sister's death and the trip then becomes her journey of grief and acceptance.

The main male character, Graeme, was the perfect complement to Katie. Graeme comes across as grumpy, hard working, and fiercely loyal to his family and his home. It’s a classic case of grumpy and sunshine romance which I was totally into. Katie and Graeme challenge each other in the best ways which help them to see their situations in a different light.

This romance, while being fun and humorous, also deals with grief in a gentle and sensitive way. If you love Scotland, travel, castles, family, friendship, and grumpy/sunshine trope then this story is one you will not want to miss!

Book Review: Some Like It Scot by Pepper Basham
I’m a little embarrassed to admit that Some Like It Scot is my first Pepper Basham novel—but the silver lining is that I now get to dive into her backlist! What a joyful discovery this book was.
The story follows Katie, a travel writer and photographer known for sharing her “Miss Adventures” with her online followers. She’s funny, self-deprecating, and utterly relatable—especially if, like me, you’ve experienced your fair share of mishaps. Her latest assignment lands her in the Scottish Highlands, where she meets Graeme MacKerrow: brooding, charming, and completely swoonworthy. Their witty banter and playful puns made their dynamic so enjoyable to read.
Katie and Graeme both experience meaningful growth over the course of the story, and watching them work through their individual challenges was a true highlight. Their emotional arcs felt natural and satisfying, adding depth to the sweet, slow-burn romance.
The MacKerrow family is another shining aspect of the book. I especially loved Mirren, the warm-hearted bookstore owner who immediately bonds with Katie, and Lachlan, an endearing eight-year-old with refreshingly honest insights and a loyal dog named Wedge. Basham does a wonderful job creating a family atmosphere that adds richness and charm to the story.
While the Scottish scenery is beautifully described, I found myself more drawn to the snappy dialogue and heartfelt interactions between characters. And perhaps best of all, Pepper Basham weaves faith into the narrative with grace and authenticity, enhancing the story without ever overwhelming it.
Some Like It Scot is a delightfully funny, heartwarming journey of healing, hope, and belonging. It’s the kind of story that leaves you smiling long after the final page. I highly recommend it—and now I’m off to read everything else Basham has written!

I laughed, snorted, and sighed. Some Like it Scot by Pepper Basham was such a fun romcom, but it had depth too. Katie Campbell is sure she’s fine traveling the world without roots… until she meets Graeme and his family on an island in Scotland and realizes maybe everything she has always wanted is right in front of her, she just needs to be brave enough to embrace it. I loved that amidst the humor and beauty of the island and the charming characters lies Katie’s longing to belong somewhere and to be loved for who she is. Her misadventures had me laughing! But this story really shines in its ability to have me laugh one minute and to be completely sucked in to deep introspection or conversation the next.

Pure delight! As always, Pepper Basham's book is full of laugh out loud moments as well as the ones that tug at your heart. When I began this story, I did not realize the depths of feelings I would experience. I expected some laughs, a swoony hero and some good warm feels. But I was pleasantly surprised. I found it to be a multi-layered story that digs deep. This one is a story of how different families deal with grief and the long term effects their coping or lack of can have on a family for years to come.

The heroine is purely lovable, one that is aware of all her flaws yet hides her wounded heart behind her laughter and self-deprecating humor. Accidents seem to shadow her every step. Add a grumpy, yet swoony Scot to the mix and I couldn't wait to see how this romance between opposites would unfold.

Ms. Basham's love for Scotland and its people simply oozes off the page, allowing her readers a heartwarming fictional escape.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC!
I enjoyed this one. I love the Scottish highlands setting, the hairy coos, the sheep, the side characters, and that she is a travel writer. It took a little too long for me for our main characters to end up together. Overall a fun read!

Fancy a trip to the highlands for an immersive Edwardian experience? Katie Campbell aka Miss Adventure has gotten an invite and she is looking forward to three weeks on Mull. What she does not plan on finding there is a hot Scot named Graeme. Before she knows it her followers are matching her up for better or worse. And with Katie's talent for finding trouble, there seems to be more of the latter. The cast of characters includes locals and other influencers. The ladies in the knitting club are a hoot (led by Graeme's deam mum Mirren). And young Lachlan with his faithful dog companion Wedge -- what a dear lad! I would love to give him a hug.🤗

With every book I read by Pepper Basham, I am becoming more of a fan. This new release gives one all the feels as it is in turns sweet, sassy, stirring, and spellbinding. Definitely makes me want to add Scotland to my travel list.😎

There we have it, folks! Proof that I can enjoy a Scottish tale on audio. I have suspected as much for some time. The dazzling narration of Stina Nelson as Katie Campbell and Joshua Manning as Graeme MacKerrow seals the deal. So glad I decided to pair the digital ARC with an audio copy. That Scottish brogue is like butter! 🧈

Thank you to Thomas Nelson and Zondervan Fiction Audio and NetGalley for my digital and audio ARCs. All opinions are my own.

Some Like It Scot by Pepper Basham is an absolute delight! I can't say enough about how much I enjoyed this book. It's a perfect blend of romance, humor, and inspiration, with a beautiful underlying message of faith that resonates throughout the story.

The characters are richly developed and incredibly relatable. The romance between the protagonists is heartwarming, with just the right amount of tension and playful banter to keep you engaged. Basham's skillful writing brings the Scottish setting to life, and her ability to weave humor into the narrative had me laughing out loud at several points.

Beyond the romance and comedy, this book is truly inspirational. It explores themes of trust, redemption, and the power of faith in a way that feels genuine and uplifting. It's refreshing to read a story that integrates faith so seamlessly into the characters' lives without feeling preachy or forced.

Overall, Some Like It Scot is a must-read for anyone who loves a good romance novel that's as heartfelt as it is humorous. Pepper Basham has outdone herself with this one, and I wholeheartedly give it a five-star rating. Highly recommended!

Katie Campbell is a a travel blogger/influencer who works for a travel magazine. She has spent the last 8 years since her grandparent's death traveling the world looking for a place to belong and feel like home. She has lived in the shadow of her sister who tragically died young leaving parents who never recovered and a family that felt like anything but that. Her grandparents farm had been the only place she felt accepted and love.

Her latest assignment brought her to the ancestral home of her grandfather, Scotland. She was there to participate in an immersive Edwardian experience ala Downtown Abbey. There she meets a handsome Scot named Graeme and his family and starts to feel like she may have found her place.

This is a wonderful story. Yes, it is a romance; but it also the story of a young woman who is searching for that place and people who will love and accept her for who she is, encourage her dreams and give her a feeling of belonging. It is also a story of self-discovery and leaning on God and the idea he has a plan for us. The story has lots of great secondary characters including a funny cute boy and his dog! It is also filled with love, faith and encouragement.

Thank you NetGalley and Thomas Nelson for allowing me to read this ARC and give my opinion.

This book was so cute! I absolutely loved the characters, humor, writing style, and that it took place in Scotland. I related to Katie a lot (not just because of our name); her wanderlust, love for the Lord, her insecurities and fears, felt like I was reading about myself.

I love when a book can integrate Christian values without feeling forced or awkward. The author did a fantastic job of making the characters' faith feel authentic and like it was interwoven into who they are.

While this was a fun book it also had a foundation of serious topics but they never felt too stressful or too heavy. With themes like grief, loss, family stress/trauma, it can be difficult to weave humor into a story without feeling like those serious topics are being minimized. But the author did a great job at handling this with grace and ease.

I will definitely look for this author in the future!

📖Review: Some Like It Scott

🪴Rate: 5 Stars! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Praise: Scottish men and grumpy/sunshine oh my! I want this book in paperback and in hardback!! I have always been a major fan of Pepper! She can write the most beautiful and whimsical romances and mysteries! I knew I had to sign up to read this novel early! I was so happy when I was granted access! Thank you Pepper and Netgalley!

✉️ Katie is a darling FMC! She has had her share grief and decides to work through it through her work as a blogger traveler! Her next stop is Scotland where she'll have a beautiful Edwardian experience! I was immediately jealous! And I knew I was going to live in Edwardian experience through her! The MMC, Graeme, is my new book crush! Definitely a grumpy and sunshine book! My favorite! Add a beautiful backdrop of Scotland with two people definitely meant for each other and I was hooked!

As always the writing flow from Pepper was magic and magnets! Easily drawn in and easily swept away! They both have had their fair share of losses and pain to get through. Thank the Lord it was definitely a light-hearted romance! These days a lot of romance is heavy with a lot of side effects I call it. But this was light-hearted and realistic and whimsical! A perfect literary dessert!

🥞 Characters: All the characters were created romantically and superbly! Each one had layers of adventure in their soul and added to each other's lives. I definitely imaged music from Enya playing! And music from the movie Brave being a soundtrack for this book. Definitely a perfect Christian romance for anyone looking for a beyond the clouds feeling!!

🧁Extra/Tropes: If the Scottish mountains could praise this novel they would! A mighty and sweet story with a mischievous and momentous love!! Thank the book clouds above!

☕Bravo Pepper!!

Popular travel writer and podcaster Katie Campbell is offered the chance to explore her ancestral roots through a three-week Edwardian experience in the beauty and eccentricity of Scotland. In her period attire, with traditional foods and activities, the opportunities for misadventures are endless, especially with the presence of a maniacal macaw, a jealous co-worker, and an all-too-surly Scotsman.

I loved this from the very beginning with all the misadventures Katie found herself in. Graeme was none too pleased to help her out but slowly warmed up to her which was sweet to see. I loved their chemistry even as they knew a relationship was highly improbable.

The exploration of grief in this was beautiful. Both Katie and Graeme had their own experience with it. The side characters were also a fun addition with all their quirks and humour.

I loved the narrators for the audio. Their Scottish accents were superb and gave life to the story. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Sadly I was not a fan of this book. It was really hard for me to get through the authors writing style. It just was not my vibe while reading.

Graeme was super cute and such a grumpy man you can’t help but like him. I enjoyed the grumpy x sunshine trope within this but I just didn’t thoroughly enjoy the story and felt it was pretty much like an okay romance but with the twist that it’s set in the Highlands of Scotland.

Katie Campbell makes a living as a travel writer, chronicling her misadventures for a magazine, blog, and social media outlets. She loves her job, because she’d rather be anywhere but within easy reach of her hypercritical mother. Ever since Katie’s beloved grandparents passed away, Katie hasn’t felt at home.

Until she takes a three-week assignment in Scotland and falls in love with the land of her grandpa’s heritage, the mother-like owner of the local bookstore, and an enchanting young orphan lad. Despite her work—taking part in an immersive Edwardian experience at a manor house—trouble hunts her down and knocks her off the stairs and into the arms of a local Scotsman. A handsome Scotsman with enough height and breadth (oh, those muscles!) to catch all six feet one of her.

The mishaps continue, as does the unlikely appearance of her Scottish hero. In each other, they discover a shared penchant for puns, a love of the moody Scottish landscape, and losses that carved deep gullies in their hearts.

Before the assignment ends, the entire village of Glenkirk and Katie’s growing readership has shipped Katie with her #hotScot. If only. How can a kind and grumpy artist wrest himself away from home and forge a relationship with an American filled with wanderlust?

Maybe the answer lies in redefining home.

What I Loved About This Book

Pepper Basham hits a home run with this laugh-out-loud funny rom-com. Your sides will ache from Katie’s misadventures, and your heart will ache with hers as she realizes her mother might never heal enough to be the mother her little girl heart has always longed for. Basham skillfully weaves the comic with the divine, leaving readers vowing to forge closer relationships with those they hold dear and the One who holds their hearts. Fans of Emma St. Clair and Courtney Walsh will enjoy this book.

Basham is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. I loved this book. Graeme and Katie may be my new favorite hero and heroine. They both had a lovely, funny way about them. Their conversations were always entertaining. It was a delight.

Katie is tall, quirky, funny, full of adventure or should I say misadventure. She continually finds herself in scrapes and uses that to bring a levity to her travel posts. Her grandpa used to say that the "only grace I had was the grace of God" (location 86). I loved this premise right from the start. It didn't disappoint.

Graeme has a wonderful, loving family that envelops Katie. She almost doesn't know what to make of it. It's so different from her own family. It was beautiful seeing her blossom as someone cared for her for who she really was.

Thank you to Thomas Nelson for providing me with a free e-copy of this book. I'd highly recommend it. It was delightful. All opinions are my own.

This was my first Pepper Basham book and it was a cut, fun cozy read. The way that the author described Scotland was fantastic and really painted a picture in my mind. Following along with Katie and her yellow wellies on her misadventures was a good time. I would prefer less talk of her size (but I feel like that is something that occurs alot with FMC - constantly mentioning their size), the cello/guitar part specifically. Good banter and I loved the "book club grannies"!

Romance but no spice in this one!

This book was so cute and so sweet. I really enjoyed. There is definitely an emphasis on faith and grief, which added so much emotion to this heartwarming story. I loved the setting, Scotland is my favorite country I’ve ever visited it, so I loved revisiting.

Sometimes home isn’t a place, it’s a person. For Katie she learns her home is with Graeme and same for Graeme. Honestly I wasn’t expecting this book to make me cry but here we are, I’m crying. Happy tears of course. I feel a kinship to Katie especially in the being extremely clumsy department. I really like that she is able to flip her accidents into fun adventures. Such a good read!
