Greer Hendricks, known for her ability to weave psychological tension into everyday situations, delivers a gripping short story in The Sublet. This compact yet impactful tale revolves around two women, Anne and Melody, whose lives collide in a way that is both unsettling and thought-provoking.

The story begins with Anne, a ghostwriter by profession lands a high paying job to help Melody, a self-made guru, to write her first self -help book. Time is of the essence, the book must be written fast or Melody may lose her fandom. She has become the latest tick toc star.

Anne cannot figure out why she was hired, especially behind her publisher’s back, since she has not ghostwritten any other self-help books. She is asked to participate in Melody’s classes in order to understand her brand and what she is all about.

Enter Melody Wells, the guru of empowerment and poise. She teaches yoga and gives words of wisdom to all her students. She always dresses in Lavender and has her own line of products. She freely gives them to Anne, who is not exactly interested in them.

In the meantime, Melody becomes more demanding of Anne’s time. The pay is good, but Anne is already stretched thin having a husband and twins. This does not make her happy.

Melody offers Anne a larger place to live and the offer is too hard to refuse. But strange things keep happening at the new apartment. Things are not what they seem.

Greer Hendricks keeps you engaged all the way until the end. The ending, however, is somewhat unclear. I must ask the obvious, why not just quit the job? When is it time to say, “No more, too weird for me.”

I have loved Greer Hendricks since I read my first book where she and Sara Pekkanen co-wrote THE WIFE BETWEEN US. I was fortunate to meet them when they came to the Indianapolis Book and Author Luncheon several years ago. The SUBLET is more like a short story or maybe the kernel idea for a book. It was a fun read that took me about an hour. Perfect book for a beach read or to. Wait out a rainstorm.

Anne is barely holding her life together when she lands her biggest client, Melody. Melody needs a ghostwriter and wants Anne to slide seamlessly into her life. When Melody provides Anne a contact for a new apartment, Anne has no reason to turn it down. Then things start to get strange with Melody and the apartment, Anne can't ignore the unsettling feeling anymore.

What a fun little thriller! I loved how much character development there was in a short story. It was suspenseful and entertaining the whole way through.

Thank you to NetGalley and Amazon Original Stories for the ARC of The Sublet.

An interesting short story....a little predictable, but kept me reading to see how it ends. Would have been a cool novel if expanded.

Average book! I kept waiting for the big twist, but it didn't happen. The ending fell flat. I'm not a big fan of this author.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the copy! This book was a fun and easy read to itch my mystery/thriller scratch without committing to a full book. The pacing and overall writing were great and I finished this book in one sitting. The ending felt abrupt and I was a bit confused- I needed to re-read it and felt that the ending was underwhelming.

I enjoyed this story, but the ending was ugh. It ended so abruptly. I think it could have been just a bit longer.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced digital copy of this book.

Super short and enjoyable read. The ending was lacking a little bit but honestly if you want a really quick thriller then I wouldn’t pass it up. I received an advance review copy, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

The ending was abrupt and predictable, but also I felt like I missed something. I had to go back and re-read, but no I didn’t miss anything it was just a sudden and boring ending. There was definitely potential here. Thank you to Amazon and NetGalley for the ARC.

I’ve read all of Greer Hendrick’s books so I was very excited to see this short story posted as available to request on NetGalley. I finished it quickly and it was very entertaining. I wouldn’t call it one of her best, but I still enjoyed it. I definitely think it’s worth a read!

This is a short novella written by Greer Hicks. The book was fast paced and got the plot across in less than 65 pages. It was a quick read, and Anne anD melody’s interactions kept the book moving along. I did feel like towards the end there was a lot happening. The book however, was entertaining to read and easy to get through.

It's a short 39 pages from one of my faves Greer Hendricks do I knew it would be a bit of a creepy thriller...it was! Had to reread the ending but it was a good one.

This is a short story from Amazon Original.

Anne is employed as a ghost writer for Melody Wells' latest motivational book. She feels she has been very lucky to get this well paid work but then things start to become very strange. The atmosphere was good and I felt it was building up to be haunted house type scary but in the end it was just clever.

I had to read the last page a couple of times to confirm in my head what had just happened. I always like that much better than a boring ending that I can see coming however tidy it may be. A short entertaining read. 4 stars.

The premise was okay. A ghostwriter who needs an extra bedroom for her growing boy/girl twins is offered a sublet in NYC via the client she’s ghostwriting for. I thought a family who needed another bedroom would actively seek out the going rate and look at other options before deciding on this one. But I let that slide.

Once they move in, the cat freaks out. And she meets a neighbor who said the previous tenant died in the bathtub. That’s the extent of the creepiness. No creepiness.

And then the main character figured out what’s going on off the page and confronts the owner. And poisons her.

The end. Poorly executed.

I love Greer Hendricks’ other books so I was so excited to see something new from her.
This story immediately grabbed my attention and was an instant Page Turner. I understand that it’s a short story, but I thought the ending could have been explained better. However, I did not predict the ending or see it coming, which is a sign of a good thriller, I look forward to what this author publishes next. Thank you for the advance copy

This opens as ghost-writer Annie lying to her husband telling him she's supposedly going to meet a well-paying prominent client (wellness guru Melody Wells) before going back to over a month earlier when Melody first tells Annie about a sub-let she's aware of. Annie and husband Paul and 9yr old twins are in a cramped apartment and the sub-let is everything they dreamed of. Until Annie learns that the previous tenant died in the apartment and the letting agent lied to them about her.

I've enjoyed Hendricks's collaborations with Sarah Pekkanen but this really didn't 'do' it for me. The pacing felt very off... with the early stages and backstory being drawn out before rushing to a confusing conclusion. I note some other reviewers suggest it would be better suited to a full-length novel to allow characters to be more fully developed and us better understand their motivation.

The early writing also seemed a little clumsy and I wondered about the editing...
'My heart beats quickly; it feels as if a brick of firecrackers is exploding in my chest.' (!!!!)

#SPOILERISH And ultimately the conclusion didn't entirely make sense - when 'something' (I can't say cos #spoilers) is used as a weapon but it only killed someone else because of a range of factors converging... which wasn't the case for the final almost-victim who seems to think it will kill them?!

Fast-paced mystery novella about a FMC (Anne) who takes a dream job as the ghostwriter for a female health & wellness guru (Melody). While I could not put it down, I was disappointed by the ending. The foreshadowing was a bit too obvious, the ending felt rushed and, without spoiling the twist, it did not really make sense how Anne handled the big reveal. Then everything was quickly wrapped up in a tidy bow. It left me wanting more, but not in a satisfying way.

Thank you to NetGalley and Amazon Original Stories for an ARC of this novella in exchange for my honest feedback.

I received this short story for free from Amazon Prime reading and overall, I rated it 4/5 stars. I enjoyed that it was a fast-paced story that did not skip on setting the scene or the emotional build up. I did not, however, enjoy the ending as much as I would've liked. I felt like there was such a big, suspenseful build up and then it just fell a little flat as far as resolutions.
