This is an Amazon Original Short Story.

Anne is a ghostwriter currently working on an inspirational self-help book. She is a wife to Paul and a mom to twins.

The story starts on July 20th with Anne driving to a secret location. The story then goes back a few weeks.

We see her interactions with Melody (who she is ghostwriting a book for). Melody is very demanding and Anne is constantly trying to keep up with her deadlines.

The main part of the story has to do with a nice apartment that Anne is offered. There is a mystery to do with this sublet that I found fascinating.

I don’t read a lot of short stories. But I do enjoy when authors that I like write Amazon Originals. This was a quick enjoyable read.

I know this was a short story and I did enjoy it, but it felt very predictable as well as a weird plot. But overall, it was a fun read.

I was fully prepared to be obsessed with this short story with how it kicked off for the first half but the ending fell flat for me, I really thought there was going to be a big plot twist with how secretive the 'author' was being with everything and the cat and neighbour but then it all kind of fizzled for me. I think there could have been more in the big confrontation/fall out even in a short story.

Thanks NetGalley for the arc!

Anne is a ghostwriter who takes on her most significant and stressful assignment yet—the memoir of a trending self-help guru, Melody. Tasked with an impossible deadline, a demanding client, and a mother's never-ending to-do list, Anne has almost hit her limit. When Melody recommends a sublet in a better part of Manhattan with stunning views and lots of room, Anne and her family jump on it. However, not all is what it seems with the apartment, and soon Anne is on a fact-finding mission to find out what happened to the previous tenant.

I love the new short-story trend. People have written these stories for ages, but now they are everywhere! On nights I don't have much time to read, I enjoy the satisfaction of getting a little entertainment with minimal investment.

Thank you for this advanced reader copy, Netgalley and Amazon Original Stories. All opinions are my own.

I mean it was fine for a short story. I thought it was leading up to be good but I didn’t love how it ended.

Easy listen, smooth writing, and I loved the narrator. It was entertaining, but the ending did not deliver in my opinion.

Was an enjoyable short story. I kind of wish that it could have been a longer story! Possible feel like there were some things left hanging, almost could have been more on the horror side. There was a lot of lead up and about 3/4 of the way through it basically fell short. the ending was rushed.

Thank you Netgalley and the author for allowing me the opportunity to an advanced copy of "The Sublet".

This was an entertaining short read by Greer Hendricks. I would have appreciated a novel length version of this story.

I received this short story as an ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I wish this were longer. I was fully encompassed into the world. I wanted more world-building. It was beautifully written. I know it's a thriller, but the approach was prose-like. It drew me in from the start. However, I will be honest and say that it was a rather bit predictable. This doesn't mean I didn't enjoy it. It just means that the mysterious element could have been better executed.

I would recommend this to any of my friends wanting to try this author out for the first time.

One bookish trend I'm loving this year, stories about ghostwriters! I am absolutely fascinated by that profession and I love imagining all the juicy intel these writers must get. What a perfect setup for a thriller! I will also read literally anything by Greer Hendricks, so The Sublet was such a fun read for me! Such a captivating story in so few pages. Definitely recommend for my thriller girlies! Out now from Amazon Publishing!

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the gifted ARC of this short story!

This is a very quick read if you’re looking for a quick beach read or interested in this author’s writing. Although coming in at less than 70 pages, this one has a twist that I didn’t see coming. The author did a good job of slowly building dread; I knew something was wrong but couldn’t put my finger on just what that was. That being said, it did take me a bit to get invested in the story, as the beginning felt like a bit of a slow burn. If this sounds up your alley then I would recommend giving this one a read!

I think short stories are tough to pull off well, and The Sublet didn’t quite hit the mark for me. It felt like it was trying to build tension, but there just weren’t enough details or events to sustain it. Instead of feeling suspenseful, it came across as more confusing than rewarding. A decent concept, but it needed more room to breathe.

This was a good very short story. It kept me engaged and was a very quick read.

Ghost writer is struggling to finish writing a book for a very peculiar health & wellness guru. While Anne does not understand the following, Melody has amassed many fans.

Anne and Paul have two children, a small apartment, and are looking for some sort of break. Melody offers the family a chance at a nice apartment in NYC, which is definitely too good to be true.

Creepy apartment and creepier employer. What could go wrong?

The Sublet follows Anne, a ghostwriter, as she tries to get her life under control. Barely keeping it together, Anne and her husband are considering moving out of Manhattan and into the dreaded suburbs in order to keep up with their expenses and have a better life for their twin children. Anne is working on a book for the famous wellness influencer Melody, who encourages Anne to move into an apartment that she knows is available. The family moves into 14E, but strange happenings and contradicting stories about the previous tenants rattle Anne as she tries to get to the bottom of what really happened in the sublet. This was a fun little thriller. The atmosphere was unnerving and it kept the story moving along. My one complaint is that I could have used a little bit more in the ending, as it felt a bit rushed. Fans of Greer Hendricks should pick this one us and readers who enjoy thrillers will probably like this as well.

I think it takes an incredibly talented author to make a short story make sense and not feel rushed. That’s not to say that every author who can’t do this is a bad author nor am I saying Greer Hendricks is a bad author, but this was not her best work.

I felt like I was missing so much information. The whole thing escalated too quickly with no actual evidence to prove that it needed to. The main character used circumstantial things to prove that there was something fishy going on and then felt vindicated in it when her random shit turned out to be right.

I think this is supposed to be a thriller and it wasn’t. It’s a random short story about two women in Manhattan and one of them is a little sketch that’s about it.
Since this takes less than an hour to read, if you’re trying to get to your reading goals by the end of the year, then this is a good one to get you there. But if you’re looking for a good thriller, this is not it.

Thank you to Netgalley, Amazon, and Greer Hendricks for the ARC of this, all opinions are my own!

Book grabbed me from the first few pages. Then somewhere around the 60% mark the story started going down. I dunno if my expectations were too high. I felt underwhelmed after finishing. I'll continue reading her stories, cause for the most part I've enjoyed them. Better luck next time.

Fast paced, creepy, short read that will keep you engaged and interested until the end. A great read for a weekend day when you’re trying to sneak a book in. Would have loved more character development if this was a longer story.

This was a quick, quick, read. It's short, only 49 pages, but they are packed with creepy questions and suspense. Annie, a ghostwriter, is trying to make some changes in her life. She is working for Melody - a Wellness influencer, who is on a tight deadline for her memoir. The more Annie buys into the lavender lemonade that Melody is selling, the more questions she finds. Even though Melody is helping her with a sublet, which seems to be much better for her family.

This was a quick, fun, easy to get through thriller. It was quick paced, obviously a little on the shorter side, but it was a good one for a pool day read. Greer Hendricks is always captivating and tells an interesting and twisted story.

Thank you to NetGalley, Amazon Original Stories and Greer Hendricks for the eARC of The Sublet in exchange for an honest review. The Sublet was published 01 April 2025.

I enjoyed this and read it in one day as I couldn't put it down - it's a fairly predictable story, but nonetheless still very suspenseful and it keeps you reading. The main character who tells the story is easy to empathise with and has a strong sense of her own failings and her own strengths. She is writing a book as 'ghost writer' for a wellness guru who offers her a house at reduced rates and as it's New York, that offer is irresistible. Predictably, there are unseen forces at work, the guru isn't all she seems and there's been a mysterious death. It's good read!
