A nice picture book introduction to compound words. The way it is written and illustrated add to the charm and excitement of this book. The clever way they sneak in learning makes its fun for younger readers learning about compound words for the first time.

I love books like this that turn learning into a game! With every page turn, you get to guess the second part of a compound word, see the result, and continue the story—an interactive approach that makes reading feel playful and exciting.
It’s both educational and fun, the kind of book that keeps kids engaged while they absorb important language concepts without even realizing it.

The cover led me to think this would be a workbook for young children, but it's a very cute picture book that connects nouns into compound nouns as an adventure ensues. I thought this was an adorable story that would be perfect for a minilesson in a classroom for gen ed teachers or ESL teachers.

I recommend this book for schools and libraries.

This is such a clever and fun introduction to compound words, wrapped up in a cute little treasure-hunting story featuring an adventurous bulldog on a quest for buried treasure.

One of my favorite parts was how the book plays with your expectations. Every other page ends in a sentence with something like “The hunt was on until DRAGON…” (cue the shadow of a dragon) and then a flip of the page reveals “…FLY stopped him” with a friendly dragonfly saying hello. Once my son started to catch on, he got so excited trying to guess what the real compound word would be—he was basically yelling predictions before we could even turn the page.

It’s a simple story, but really effective, especially for helping young kids start to break down how compound words work. The list of compound examples at the end (bulldog, rainbow, dragonfly, etc.) is a great touch, too—handy for reinforcing what they just learned.

Perfect for early readers or kids just starting to play around with language, especially if you want to sneak in a little learning with their storytime.

The Compound Noun Treasure Hunt will be published August 5, 2025.

A very charming grammar lesson, that never once looks like a lesson. It's about a bull – well, it's not, but it starts with one. It's actually about a bullDOG, and when he finds a map he decides to seek gold and treasure. Every spread sets up a compound noun, and every page turn completes the word, adding to the stool to the toad, and so on, and the piece makes for a whimsical narrative with a jolly ending. After that there's one spread of simple revision, and that's it – no tutor's notes, no plodding discussion of grammar and what the book is trying to get us to learn. It's quite the joyful little piece, with good humour and enough to make the most learning-resilient child pick something up. Despite – or because of – its simplicity, I think it's a full five stars.

I have reviewed all the Language is Fun books and this one is a great addition! I loved that they broke the compound word at the page turn, which changed where you thought the story was going. So much fun and learning too. Beautiful illustrations. Recommend!

An absolutely adorable book that showcases how going from a noun to a compound noun can change the projection of a story completely! And you can’t help but have fun along the way!! The illustrations are great and the story keeps you guessing. Speaking of guessing: we had fun trying to see what the compound noun was going to be before we flipped the page!

Having fun while learning is the BEST!

In this book, children are introduced to compound words and how they are formed. The book includes vivid illustrations that complement the story and make it easier to absorb the information. It's nice that the main character and his friend are themselves compound words.

Awesome book! I don't think compound words get as much attention as they should, so this book definitely made me happy. First of all, I want to say that it was very smart of the author to make the compound words carry over onto the next page (i.e. one half of the word on one page and the rest of the word onto the subsequent page). This both allows the story to flow really well but also breaks down what a compound word is, and how it is formed. Additionally, the author of this book could have just made a collage of a book and compiled a bunch of compound words together and included pictures of the words' meanings. However, they didn't do that, and thank goodness they didn't! There was actually a story to this book, which I wasn't expecting! It's truly impressive how the author managed to fit so many compound words into a fun and well-organized story. Relating to my previous point, it adds to the learning experience because it will help kids better remember common compound words. Bravo!!
