“The Compound Noun Treasure Hunt- A Picture Book about Compound Words” by Kimberlee Gard makes a great introduction to compound words. The book lends itself well to predictive reading allowing young readers to easily guess what is coming next. Perfect for kindergarten, first, and early second grade readers. I highly recommend for early elementary teachers and homeschool parents.

A very charming grammar lesson, that never once looks like a lesson. It's about a bull – well, it's not, but it starts with one. It's actually about a bullDOG, and when he finds a map he decides to seek gold and treasure. Every spread sets up a compound noun, and every page turn completes the word, adding to the stool to the toad, and so on, and the piece makes for a whimsical narrative with a jolly ending. After that there's one spread of simple revision, and that's it – no tutor's notes, no plodding discussion of grammar and what the book is trying to get us to learn. It's quite the joyful little piece, with good humour and enough to make the most learning-resilient child pick something up. Despite – or because of – its simplicity, I think it's a full five stars.
