This one starts off with trigger warnings and resources you can use. I think this is super helpful and impactful in the reading world. You and your book club can see if it’s something everyone can handle or not. This also has super thought provoking questions that you can discuss.

I love these book club kits! This one includes an author interview, discussion questions, bookmarks specific to the book, foods and drinks that go with the book, documentaries to be watched to add to the experience, what to read next, and an about the author section. These can add to the experience of reading the book, knowing why the author chose to write Bibb Country, and questions to help further think about the story. It is nice to read with a bookmark that "matches" the story, especially when you can share food and drink with friends during the discussions.

I highly recommend using the book club kits whenever they are available, especially when they come from We Are Bookish!

I was given the opportunity to try the Book Club Kit for Bibb Country, by NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review.

This book club kit was well put together. The author interview was interesting, and the discussion questions were thought-provoking and open-ended which are perfect for a book club small group setting. The printable bookmarks are a nice touch as well as the food and drink ideas for party planning purposes.

This book really changed my viewpoints as a white woman, especially about the role of white women being a huge driving force of awfulness in the history of the United States. I won’t say the south, because the horror happens still, and even more today that it seemed to before 2016. I felt the author’s anxiety come across when she and the black family heard the white people come into the Bibb home, and the ghosts of the past were ever-present. I can’t adequately put into words how much I dearly love this book.

Big thanks to Lonnae O'Neal and We Are Bookish and NetGalley for the opportunity to check out this Book Club Kit for Bibb Country. I'm a member of a couple book clubs and personally have interest in historical nonfiction and memoirs. This is a great kit for discussing the book, with an interview from the author, which was very illuminating as to the thought process and writing process of the book. I really appreciated the question about research and the process, which gave me some direction for my own research and writing. What an important story! The discussion questions provide the perfect way to facilitate further conversation about the deeper political and sensitive topics. The bookmarks and recipes included are a lovely addition, and will make the book come to life that much more. The recommendations at the end also were awesome, as I added a few books and films to my TBR and TBW (to be watched). Looking forward to those! Thank you so much again.

This is a bookclub kit for the book Bibb County by Siobhan L. Reviewer. It chronicles, in a combination of memoir, food history, and cultural critique of Lonnae O’Neal’s digging into the Bibb House. Lonnae’s fourth great-grandmother, Keziah, was enslaved by the Kentucky Bibb family. Among other names of note in the family tree are John Bigger Bibb who developed the culinary delight known as the Bibb lettuce strain, and Major Richard Bibbs who set free numerous Black Bibbs, including Keziah.

Rumors and mystery swirl around the descendants of the Bibb family, both Black and white. Through historical records, genealogical science, oral histories, and interviews Lonnae brings the stories of the Bibb family to life while tracing the legacy of the Black Bibbs’ migration from Kentucky to Southern Illinois and beyond.

This book deals with a number of heavy and at times, traumatic, topics. The book club kit handles this with an ease that is not easily found in other such kits. The inclusion of the author interview in this kit was a wonderfully reflective of the book overall. The questions to discuss were thoughtful and tempered to hold space for some of the heavier topics. This book club kit is a well thought out and inclusive packet that will be a great asset to any group that chooses this book for one of their reads.

Thank you to NetGalley and We Are Bookish for providing an ARC of the Bibb Country book club.

In 2019, writer and journalist Lonnae O'Neal attended, and wrote about, a family reunion—one with a peculiarly American twist. The Bibb House reunion brought together descendants of slave owner Richard Bibb and the people he and his family enslaved. The experience culminated in Bibb Country, which O'Neal describes as part history book, part memoir, and part cultural critique.

The book club kit for Bibb Country was designed with the understanding that the reader, and book group, is wading into trauma-laden waters. It includes a riveting interview with O'Neal, who discusses how researching and writing about her ancestors helped her address her family's trauma history. And it's a lot. With that in mind, the kit includes a content warning, resources to support survivors, and discussion questions that dig deep. It also includes printable bookmarks and suggested recipes (Bibb salad, anyone?).

Bibb Country is a specifically American journey that will resonate with readers from all walks of life. In this time of multiple crises, O'Neal invites us to face our pasts so we can work towards a brighter future together. The Bibb Country book club kit makes that journey just a little easier by reminding us that we can face hard things when we do them with support, and in community. Highly recommend.

Many thanks to NetGalley and We Are Bookish for providing an ARC of the Bibb Country book club.

As always, the We Are Bookish Book Club Creators have shared with me a guide that has me making suggestions for our next read. In this case our August Book Club and I am adding an activity when we adopt it...sharing a jacket of lettuce seeds to grow and journal about. I think there is something so powerful in watching life grow and seeing this story develop alongside it.

Thank you for sharing this joy and recommendation for me. With documentary suggestions, cookbook to draw from, and fiction. This is a month long celebration that may grow into two!

This is a wonderful book club kit! I felt that the author interview really added to understanding for the why behind her book and it was interesting to hear how her family investigation evolved and what things are still on her mind to continue to dig into. The complementary recipes, suggested readings, and identified documentaries added opportunities for depth and further exploration of the book's topic. I added several books to my TBR from it!

This book club kit was well thought out and put together. It not only included thoughtful questions, but also activities, bookmarks, and recipes (food and drink) to make the book club meeting more of an event! I appreciated that it included information on the author, other books by her/the publisher, and suggestions for books to read if you enjoyed this one. This kit also included some ideas to link in a movie night, which I'm not sure I've seen in these kits before. This would be a great kit for someone wanting to change up a book club meeting.
