Hatred is one of the most unpredictable emotions a human can feel. It doesn't lead to logical results. I wish this novel covered more historical and present issues that were from hatred. This is overall an interesting read nonetheless

A nonfiction book in translation from the German. Some interesting insights here about colonialism and oppression but dense at times and the overall thesis and organization of this narrative didn’t quite work for me here.

Hate is a translated non-fiction book that discusses the history of hate as a concept. Kurt describes different interpretations of hate and what it means from an oppressed perspective. The view of the colonised is discussed in here and this book discusses personal experiences with hate alongside hate in society. For example, there is a lot mentioned on police violence against black Americans and immigrants.

To start with the positives, I really appreciate how Kurt discussed their personal experiences with hate particularly when it comes to their parents. I also liked how this discussed Germany as some of the issues were truly shocking such as deaths in police custody. I want to say this is worth a read for anyone interested in hate particularly looking at it from an anti-colonial perspective. That said, this just wasn’t for me and I didn’t have the best time with this. I found it to be disjointed and I think it lacked a clear argument. To be honest even after reading this I’m not sure what Kurt is arguing for and I think this tries to cover too much.

I got this as an arc on Netgalley and this translation will come out in November. This was such an interesting read! It looked at hate through many different lenses and I genuinely felt like I was being taken along a well thought out train of thought.

“The Peace is always the peace of the victors”

This is such an informative and balance book that talks about the concept of hatred, the types of hatred, causes of hatred, the consequences and effects of hatred has on an individual and society at large and why hatred can be necessary.

At first I was apprehensive at reading this book as I’m not much of a nonfiction reader but this book is not slow pace and doesn’t imparts a holier than thou approach to the reader. A recommended reading especially in understanding the oppression and injustice going around in current reality.
