This book is deeply descriptive and well laid out. The history is in the forefront, with religious influence woven into it and just a touch of fantasy. If this sounds like something that is interesting for you, then this book is a book for you!! I went into this book thinking that it was a dark romantasy with a touch of historical fiction, which was a misunderstanding on my part. I thought I would enjoy this book more than I did, but I’m figuring out that I am not a historical fiction girly, and that is okay.

This book is incredibly deep. It's descriptive and well thought out. It leans more toward the historical genre than to the Romantasy genre and that is perhaps why it isn't the book for me. I'm not a historical girly but I am a Romantasy girl. If you enjoy historical romance with religious content woven in with the story line you will definitely love this book.
She did a phenomenal job with the historical aspects of the book such as the moral compass of the characters, how women were considered in this time period, the language used in this era. If these things are your jam, this is the book for you!

Very unique perspective and story line that captures your attention from the start - I love the historical component that really sets it apart from other storylines in this genre. Her writing style was captivating and really draws you in - I'd love to see this storyline be continued in further books.

Byrdfyre Convenant is everything I crave in a romantasy: fierce heroines, broody boys with secrets, ancient magic, and that delicious enemies-to-lovers tension we all secretly live for. Rating at 4.5 stars, this is a must-read!

Not gonna lie, the emotional damage that came with this book was insane but was worth every tear and heartache! Although it was a somewhat slower paced book, it was exactly as it should be and I was never once bored! The story from the beginning captured my attention and held me throughout.
Astrid... I love her. I feel for her. I admire her. She's the obedient daughter that develops into her own strong woman. I need more, quite honestly. The ending was not at all what I thought it would be and I was in a complete chokehold the last 20% or so of the book... I will be thinking and speculating about this book until I hopefully get a book 2!!

This is an absolutely gripping historical fiction with supernatural/old gods elements. The writing is so great and the FMC is such an authentic character.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I had the impression from bookstagram that this was at least partially a romance but I would argue it's not at all. The MMC feels more like a friend/companion than a true love interest.

As tragedy after tragedy befalls the FMC, be prepared for your heart strings to be pulled!

I started this thinking it was a romantasy and it's definitely more historical fiction with a lot of religious influence. While I enjoyed Astrid and following her plight and struggles as she dealt with the unknown of the black plague, I found the flashes of academic course descriptions a bit disjointed. I kept expecting some way that it would come back together or the end of Astrid's journey would be the subject for some current research paper but I finished the book with more questions unanswered. It is a unique angle and the characters are complex, but just felt a little unfinished, even for the first book in a series.

This was not what I was expecting.
It is not my normal choice of a book to read but I did enjoy it.
I'm not religious so parts of this were a bit too much on that but the writing was beautiful. The characters were both likeable and not, so they felt more real.
The struggles to try and save everyone would have broken most people but Astrid was strong and determined. The towns people show how easy people can believe lies just to not have to make difficult choices.

Byrdfyre Covenant is an exploration of character - of what one would do when faced with horrific and unending circumstances, tossed with a bit of Old God mysticism on the side.

This book takes a refreshing perspective on the Black Death and its encroachment on Norway. Astrid is a strong female character who must find her way against different odds - the impending death of those she knows and loves, the control of the preacher of the town, and the town's and her own family's strict beliefs. Astrid doesn't seem to be able to catch a break but continues to persevere with assistance from a stranger who may or may not be Will Green.

Nice dash of fantasy amid some historical fiction with glimpses into modern-day studies of the town's history and the effects of prolonged struggles. I was hooked in following Astrid to the book's conclusion.

This is my first time reading a book by Jayne Starwing and I must say that I was very impressed. I have to admit the main character Astrid was the epitome of strong woman becaise not many people would be able to move on with their life after the black plague. I look forward to reading more of her books in the future.

This book was giving the vibe of the invisible life of addie larue and I ate it up. If you like v.e. schwab you will enjoy this.

Incredible. Loved it. Reminded me a lot of both The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue and Our Infinite Fates.

I finished Byrdfyre Covenant by Jayne Starwing (thanks for the early ARC!) a little while ago but requested it again on NG just to post this. I’m still thinking about it, weeks later. I'm obsessed. This is an incredible series starter fantasy romance with a historical setting. Amazing. Slow burn, no spice, but sooooo much dreamy promise. Beautifully written. It's a blend of so many things - historical fiction, literature, and romantasy. It hit all the right notes. The story follows Astrid, a reluctant surviving of the Black Plague. Throw in a martyr and an Old God and more and you get a recipe for greatness! Incredible book. Truly. I am FERAL for more.
