My Heart Belongs On Mackinac Island: Maud's Mooring by Carrie Fancett Pagels is the most delightful Christian historical romance. It is my favourite so far of all of Carrie Fancett Pagel's novels. I always know that she writes fabulous stories by Maud's Mooring really was something extra special.
Set on Mackinac Island, the scenery comes alive with Carrie Fancett Pagels detailed descriptions. The reader does not so much read the story as walk alongside the characters. These characters were wonderfully and realistically drawn. They all had their human and vulnerable sides as well as strong work ethics. The characters were unique and loving. I was particularly drawn to Maud with whom I empathised. I was delighted by the antics of her brother Jack. His speech had been perfectly captured and he was as his name suggests a real Jack-the-lad who bought many a smile to my face.
There were the Godly themes of grace and forgiveness. "God required she give mercy as He extended it to her." Forgiveness is essential but not always easy to do without God's help. Grace has saved us all, not good works so no one can boast. "Prayers hadn't saved Mother, nor had good works." We cannot work our way into God's good books as we are already there. We have to have faith and trust His plan for our lives, no matter how painful it may seem at times.
People are very concerned with appearances but God is more concerned with the state of our heart. "One's heart and soul wasn't altered simply by donning fine attire." The world judges by one standard, God has a different standard. Clothes can be deceiving, a heart of gold may beat beneath what the world classes as shabby clothing.
The truth is always best. Deceptions are necessary at times in the novel but do not always sit comfortably with the characters who are happiest when their real self is on display.
This links to the theme of identity. Characters need to know who they are and where they come from. Most important is to know who we are in God and to lean into His gifts for us.
Family is important. The islanders function as a family, pulling together in times of crisis.
Maud's Mooring is such a delightful story. It really spoke to my heart. I identified with Maud, a quietly determined and loyal young lady whose thinking was ahead of her times.
Carrie Fancett Pagels always writes stories that penetrate my very being. Maud's Mooring is just such a wonderful story. I cannot praise it highly enough but don't take my word for it - buy yourself a copy and read it today. You are in for a real treat.
I received this book for free. A favourable review was not required and all views expressed are my own.

My Heart Belongs on Mackinac Island: Maude's Mooring (My Heart Belongs)
by Carrie Fancett Pagels

1895...Mackinac Island, Michigan...Maude Welling just cannot understand why her father is so adamant about her not managing Winds of Mackinac Inn without a husband. Well, she has to do something to prove to him she is capable of running it without a husband. Thus she comes up with a plan, albeit a risky one at best.

Journalist Ben Steffans—or rather Friedrich Konig—is on an undercover assignment as a wealthy industrialist staying at the infamous Grand Hotel pursing a story about impoverished men chasing women of financial means and heiresses—and maybe a promotion when finished...and finds himself intrigued by an attractive maid.

Circumstances and mishaps bring Ben and Maude together and they form a fragile, tender friendship. As Ben digs deeper into his story he uncovers scandals and secrets that could unravel the fragile love growing. A story filled with mystery and intrigue, joys and sorrows, love and faith. I love Maude and Ben...and Jack is a precious little boy full of energy! There are characters that I was not sure I would like at first but later in the story I changed my mind about them. The authors' description of the Island has me wanting to take a trip and visit and maybe stay for a long while. I would stay at the Winds of Mackinac Inn and maybe get Jack to slow down a bit and take me on a tour. Wonderful, heartwarming story.

(~I also received an e-book from the author via netgalley, (no monetary gain were exchanged), this is my honest review~)

This is the first book I’ve read by Carrie Fancett Pagels, but it definitely will not be the last. I thoroughly enjoyed the story of Maude Welling and Friedrich König set on Mackinac Island in the late 1800s. I look forward to one day visiting the Grand Hotel, and I feel sure these characters will be with me as I explore the resort and the island. I respect both Maude’s and Friedrich’s integrity, and the drive to be both true to themselves and true to their Lord, not allowing the desires for success in their careers to sidetrack them, well at least not for long. This is a lesson that is timeless.
Chivalry certainly lived in the character of Friedrich König, always putting the safety and best interest of others before his own, even risking exposure of his working under a pseudonym, exposure that could cost him his job. Maude’s character exemplified grace born out of a relationship with her Savior and from her great ability to empathize, an ability that grew as she worked to prove herself while serving incognito at the Grand Hotel. Will these two strong people be able to get past their misunderstandings and find common ground that will make them a couple? Well, we all know how these kinds of stories work out, don’t we, but you will have to read for yourself to discover the path these two follow.
As I read My Heart Belongs on Mackinac Island, the thought occurred to me several times that fans of Lorna Seilstad’s The Gregory Sisters series, would love this book as well. Each is a book with a strong female character that is at peace with her strengths and abilities, and who also understands that God’s role for women is not to be confused with keeping women in their place. I thank NetGalley and Barbour Publishing for providing this book for my honest opinion. I received no monetary compensation for this review.

I absolutely loved this book! This is by far my favorite book by author Carrie Fancett Pagels, and I've read them all.
The intrigue of the secret identities, the neighborly, family-like love between the islanders and how they look out for each other, the impish little brother Jack, Maude, and the stranger who has unwittingly captured her heart. All come together to create one of the best books I've read in a long time.
Maude is more upset than heartbroken, that her supposed fiance' has come home a married man because her father will not let her run the family inn without a husband. She has to prove to him that she can do it on her own. She must keep him from selling The Winds of Mackinac Inn that has been part of her mother's family for generations, it is her home, it is where her heart belongs.
The book is fast paced, filled with mystery and secrets that abound at every turn. The romance is heartwarming and real. I won't give spoilers in a review. I will highly recommend this book to anyone who loves Historical Christian fiction. I loved this look at life on Mackinac Island in the late 1890's.

What a super book. I can surely understand why Maude would want to stay on Mackinac Island. Sounds like a place I would enjoy, too! The ups and downs of Maude's love life, my oh my! The writing is fantastic and the characters are well developed and interesting. What a time period and what a place. Highly recommend.

This story is about Maude Welling from Mackinac Island and how she met and fell in love with Ben Steffan. It is a wonderful story about love, trust, and faith in God. Maude lives on Mackinac Island at the Winds of Mackinac Inn, her family Inn. She tries to get her father to let her manage the Inn by herself as he has a failing heart. However, father doesn't want her working herself to death like her mother and his mother did. To prove she can manage the Inn on her own, she takes a job as a maid at the Grand Hotel on the hill.

Ben is a reporter on assignment to find out who the men at the Grand Hotel are wooing rich ladies to get their money. He is also tasked with finding out the story behind Maude's former fiance' and his new wife, since her family is a competitor to Ben's bosses' newspaper. Ben has to decide in the end if the stories he has investigated are worth telling or if it is best to do the right thing.

I really enjoyed this clean historical romance and recommend it to anyone who also enjoys this type of genre'. Check it out, you won't be sorry. Enjoy!

I received a copy of this story via NetGalley and all the opinions are purely my own and I was not compensated in any way for my opinion.

Picking up this book you will find yourself drifting back thru the mist of time to Mackinac Island, June 1895. The descriptions of the views from the Grand Hotel are so vivid that you can feel the cool lake breeze and see the azure lake sparkling in the sun’s gentle rays.

Maude Welling has known not only the deep loss of loosing her mother, but also the shame of her fiancé returning to the island married to someone else. She has not only lost her ability to trust others, but she is trying to discover the secret her father is keeping from her. She wants to prove her worth not only to him, but to herself all well. Will she be able to find where she belongs?

Ben Steffans is jaded by his past. His parents and sister were tossed out of the only home they knew by his Uncle. His parents then brought them to America and the promise of a golden future that tarnished all to quickly. He is now on a mission as an undercover newspaper reporter in search of the story that will propel his career forward.

Can two people from different walks of life, and hidden agendas be able to let down their guards to not only find the person that God wants them to be, but also allow others in?

With dynamic characters and an ideal setting this story will find its way into your heart. I’ve yet to visit Mackinac island. I’ve wanted to visit since watching the Jane Seymour & Christopher Reeve in the movie “Somewhere In Time”. This book only solidified my desire to travel north to Mackinac.

A beautiful Mackinac Island, Michigan setting in June 1895, brings together a young woman and man posing as their opposites in society. Maude believes she must prove her worth and ability to run an inn to convince her father. Ben just wants a good story, so he can hopefully advance in his career.

There was a lot of deception and misunderstanding between the main characters, preventing them from really getting to know each other. Each one wrestles with their conscience, and has to decide if they will trust in God for their future, learning to look to Him for guidance, to discern His will, instead of holding tightly to possessions or misguided ambitions. The theme of forgiveness and looking to God to meet our needs was illustrated well in the story.

I like how this author used real landmarks and places in the story, researching the area, and painting a picture of what island life was like in the summer when wealthy tourists came to stay on the island. It sounded like a lovely place to vacation, biking and walking everywhere. The use of real people and their work, like Mark Twain and his book The Prince and the Pauper, added authenticity. The plot was even rather a take on this classic. The index had some interesting facts about the real people and locale.
I had a hard time connecting to the characters in the first half, as the story seemed to jump around a lot. It came together nicely later on though. It was fun to see the nod to some of the author's characters from other stories in a few spots.

Recommend for readers who enjoy historical Christian romances.

My Heart Belongs on Mackinac Island: Maude's Mooring by Carrie Fancett Pagels is a delightful romance. Set in the late 1800s on the lovely Mackinac Island, readers meet Maude as she runs to meet her intended's arrival. And the plot thickens from there. All of her plans--of marriage, of staying on the island and of managing the family inn--seem to come to naught. Ben, a Detroit newspaperman, has come to the island for the story of his career, but to do so, he has taken on a new name. Things don't go as planned for him either. The author does a great job in portraying the era and the island, one can picture in the mind's eye the activities going on and I swear I could smell the lilacs! The characters are realistic and likable and there's even a cameo appearance of Mark Twain. Readers meet plenty of characters who are like most locals do in small towns--watching out for each other, gossiping and taking an interest in each other's lives, especially if there's a romance happening. Betrayals, deceits, and secrets are woven together to bring twists to the plot and keep the reader guessing as to what is happening. Will Maude be able to stay on Mackinac? Why is her father not forthcoming regarding his plans for the inn? Will Ben get his big story? Is there a chance for romance for Ben and Maude or will the deceits and secrets be just too much to overcome? Another charming and entertaining story from a favorite author.

My Heart Belongs on Mackinac Island: Maude's Mooring is a fabulous addition to Barbour Publishing's My Heart Belongs line. It is summer 1895 and Heiress Maude Welling disguises herself and works as a maid at the island's Grand Hotel. Journalist, Ben Steffens, comes to town and goes undercover as a wealthy businessman, trying to investigate a future story about gold digging men pursuing heiresses. Maude and Ben meet and begin to fall for one another. What will happen when the truth comes out about who they truly are?

Carrie Fancett Pagels has written a winner with My Heart Belongs on Mackinac Island: Maude's Mooring. I love how she used the beautiful setting at Mackinac Island in the story. The descriptions of the island and hotel we're so vivid, that I felt like I was transported back in time. I just love the character of Maude, how she was so determined to become her own person and knew what she wanted. I was not sure how I felt about Ben in the beginning, but he grew on me by midway. A wonderful story of forgiveness, faith, and inspiration.

Highly recommended.

5+ stars.

I received this book from the publisher, but was not required to write a review. This review is 100% my own honest opinion.

Maude wants to run the inn that's been in her family for decades. Ben wants to finally get the biggest scoop of his career and win the assistant editor position - no matter the cost. These two must work together to sort through the secrets and lies to find what they truly want - and what they must do to achieve their dreams.
This Christian romance was fun and adorable. I have the typical complaints with this that I tend to with romances - it was semi-predictable, the characters lacked depth, and everything in the story conspired to bring our lovers apart. Once I was able to put that aside, I thoroughly enjoyed this book for many reasons:
1) Maude was far more of a feminist than I originally assumed. She frequently takes charge of situations in her life and does what she thinks is best. I wasn't expecting such a strong female character who worked so hard to achieve her dreams (most of which had nothing to do with finding love).
2) The plot itself was much more complicated than I assumed it would be. I thought this would be a much more straightforward romance, but by the time I was halfway through, I must admit I was a bit confused - I thought all the complications had already happened because there were SO MANY, yet more kept coming. And each complication built on other ones. They didn't feel cheap or too easy. I didn't predict as many events as I thought I would, and that was quite a bit of fun.
I recommend this for anyone who likes a good love story and historical fiction.

Enchanting and delightful
A very nice and clean story. I really enjoyed all the in and outs of the lives of the people on the island. Maude and Greyson were suppose to get married. Ben came for a newspaper story, incognito. Then things get a little complicated. The plot is refreshing and full of emotions about family, confusion, love and trust in God. The characters are intelligent and witty. Together they make a very good tale that can be recommended for anyone, of any age to read. It is attention getting and it keeps it till the end. I was given this book for an honest review.

What a tangled web we weave when we practice to deceive. Maude Well's family have run the Winds of Mackinac Inn for generations. But Maude's widowed father doesn't believe she's capable of running it without a husband, so she goes to work undercover at the Grand Hotel. Mrs. Fox the head of housekeeping seems to be hiding her own secrets. Ben Steffans, a Detroit newspaper journalist, is undercover as a wealthy industrialist to scoop a story that will hopefully raise him from reporter to assistant editor. Greyson, Maude's beau/fiance, has returned to the island but with a wealthy wife. Maude's Uncle Robert is acting strangely along with her dad who seems to be suffering from heart problems. Is anyone who they really seem?

I love the snippets of suspense throughout this historical romance as it's never quite clear who is doing what or why, and are they depending on themselves or listening to what God's plans are for them. It is obvious that Pagels is extremely knowledgeable and fond of Mackinac Island. She brings the island and its culture of the late 1890's to life. The characters were realistically intriguing as they all tried to sort out the difficulties in their lives. They were all attempting to make the right choices but life seemed to get in the way sometimes and forced them to really look at what they had done in the past and what they were doing now. I would really love to see a sequel to this book to find out more about what happens to all the characters I fell in love with on Mackinac Island.

FAVORITE QUOTES: "Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do."

"It had been wrong to think she should settle for anything less than true love as God intended for her.

After her fiance arrives back on the island married to another woman, Maude Welling's dream of running her family's inn are dashed when her father tells her that without a husband he will not allow it. So she comes up with a plan to go undercover at the rival inn that will surely change his mind and show him that she doesn't need a man to help her run the inn. Journalist Ben Steffans has come to Mackinac Island undercover to work on a story about impoverished men who visit the island looking for wealthy women to wed. Ben and Maude keep crossing paths and begin to develop a sweet friendship, but will all their deceptions get in the way of their blossoming relationship?

I'm a big fan of Carrie Fancett Pagels, so when I first heard about this book I got super excited. And I've gotta say that it did not disappoint! It's my new favorite book of hers. She is a master at creating memorable and genuine characters and settings that leave a lasting impression. All the historical details lent this novel an authentic feel and made it truly come to life. The descriptions really leaped off the page, transporting me back in time to 1895 Mackinac Island, right there with these fascinating characters.

One thing that I absolutely loved were all the German words and phrases sprinkled here and there throughout the novel. I took four years of German in high school, so it's always fun to see how much of it I actually remember.

My Heart Belongs on Mackinac Island is a wonderful novel that is sure to delight any fan of historical romance! Highly recommend!

Set in my beautiful state of Michigan on Mackinac Island, I loved that Author Carrie Fancett Pagels did her homework and portrayed the island true to form. Even including the lovely lilacs it’s known for! It was tough to see the class differences on the island but that was very real for its day and Carrie didn’t shy away from what would have happened and how people in all classes would have responded to situations.

Full of twists, turns, and intrigue, I was immediately pulled into this story. The characters of this book are very believable and they learn that trusting God is so very important. It was great to see growth portrayed as they learned this lesson, and to see how it affected their decisions.

I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading more by this author!

First off let me say that Mackinac Island is a beautiful place to visit. There are certain things that haven't changed with time. Like no cars allowed only horses, carriages, and bycicle.
The very first time I went was when I was a child the place just took my breath away!! Every time my parents asked me where I wanted to go, I said Mackinac island Michigan.
The bridge is magnificent!! She's a beauty all in herself!
I cannot imagine how they ever got across the straights!
The Grand does live up to its name. We stayed there in 2005 and President Bush visited it the same time! But, we weren't dressed for dinner so we couldn't attend the dinner party.
As I was reading this story about Maude and Ben I was transported back to the 1800's.
Carrie you have done a fabulous job in bringing me back to my most favorite place in the whole wide world!!! I wish I could live there!!
This is my idea of my little piece of heaven on Earth!!
Ben and Maude certainly had their differences but but isn't it true that opposites attract?
Maude is a speciallady and and equally determined to to prove her father wrong.
I love the Great Lakes rescue scene and was intrigued by how fast the islanders came to help out those who were in distress.
I wish that we all took the time to help each other out today like they did back then.
Ben reminds of the tv show Undercover Boss. He is determined to get to the bottom of a certain mystery.
I enjoyed this story especially for what I call a mystery and and I enjoyed watching Ben and Maude find their way. God has His timing of making things work to his advantage and my granny used to say there's a lid for every pot!! She's so right to this day.
I also don't understand how men can be so stubborn about women wanting to be their equal.
I love Jack's energy. I'd so love to borrow some from him. He made me laugh out loud. To me Jack is the one who makes this story exciting!!
I wanted very much to choke to choke Greyson Luce!! He had no idea how much he had lost until it was gone! I kept screaming at him to wake up and see what's right in front of him!!!
I think we are all like that at times!!!
Five stars for this book for sure!!

Now and then I read a book that just says summer is here! I recently finished reading My Heart Belongs on Mackinac Island Maude's Mooring: by Carrie Fancett Pagels and this is just such a book.

My Heart Belongs on Mackinac Island: Maude's Mooring by [Pagels, Carrie Fancett]
Maude Welling is a lovely young woman, considered by fellow islanders to be the best sort of girl. She is unspoiled by the things most girls visiting the island long for. Her desire is to marry Greyson, her long time intended, and run the family inn. Fate, however unkind, intervenes and Maude is left at the pier to watch in horror as Greyson introduces Maude to Ann, his new wife.

Enter Mr. Frederic Konig, a handsome young man who is a very wealthy industrialist, witnessing the entire scene between Maude, Greyson and Ann. He was taken in by her hurt manner, but even more so by her beauty and grace.

Mr. Konig will be staying at the very smart Grand Hotel, the very best place on the island to find wealthy young women. Frederic, though, is an imposter. He is not who he says he is. He is actually Ben Steffan, a young reporter for the Detroit Post. He was furnished in the finest men's fashions, schooled in the proper etiquette of wealth and, more specifically, on special assignment to expose handsome young dandies who prey on lovely young women of fortune. He can fool the many but in his heart he knows who he is. A man of compassion, he feels like he is playing a game of the Prince and the Pauper. His dress and actions speak the part but his good nature continues to shine through. Mark Twain himself appears at the Grand, a nice touch of poetic license that adds just the right spice for Ben when he needed it.

Maude lives with her widowed father and lively brother Jack. She should be learning to take over the family inn, The Winds of Mackinac, but her father's wishes are adamant: she will not run the inn without the help of a husband. With her wedding plans down the pipe she is determined to prove to her father that she is capable of running the inn. She assumes the role of maid at the Grand Hotel, fooling her father but risking termination by her lack of skills.

Frederic takes an interest in Jack, an incorrigible lad who seems to be everywhere at once with many plans up his sleeve. He and his games are incorrigible. Jack is running so much it is hard to realize that if he slowed down he'd have to deal that old pain that keeps rising to the surface named grief. The Wellings lost their mother the year before and the grief is still hanging around the house like an unsung song.

Maude, her father and uncle Robert all have to come to an understanding of the future of the inn. Wills are meant to make things easier for loved ones left behind but once in a great while, a codicil can change the expectations of everyone. There is more riding on the fate of this will than just a family legacy on the island.
I liked the story. The setting on Mackinac Island lent itself well to the summer people who likely found respite from the city during the heat of the summer. Young women of marriageable age would have enjoyed being pampered at the Grand Hotel. The idea that a paper would set a handsome young reporter on unsuspecting gold diggers was a nice twist. It lured me in like a fisherman with a tall tale. I recommend you add My Heart Belongs on Mackinac Island to your summer reading list!

This story brings to mind the quote “Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive”, and the author has it coming on more than one front. Whether it is from our reporter Ben, or from Maude’s Grandmother or her Mother, or even her former beau, they all seem to hidden something.
The setting for this book is beautiful Mackinac Island, and year 1895, and we have arrived at a beautiful time of the year, spring, the rebirth, and full of the scents of blooming lilacs and other flowers.
The author has us wondering what is going on when Maude’s intended arrives back on the island, and as we are running with her to greet him, we see he is not alone. This is also the moment that Maude meets Ben Steffans, and soon Ada Fox, and these two along with Maude’s brother Jack will warm your heart.
Surprises abound here and we hope for the best now and in the future, and sure would love to hear how our Jack does in the Olympics!
Prevalent throughout this book is the love of God, and we see how many practice their faith in their everyday lives.
Come and get lost in this sweet story, and the lives of these characters, some are really going to surprise you.

Mackinac Island, Michigan - 1895

Maude Welling has lived her entire life on the Island as has many of her family members. Her father owns the Winds of Mackinac Inn and family members own numerous businesses on the Island. Since Maude's mother passed away, her father's health has been failing and Maude wants to prove to him that she can take over running the Inn.

Maude had become enamored by a man called Luce Greyson. He has been away for awhile and is returning today. Maude just knows he will be proposing to her. But she is heartbroken to find him returning with a lovely woman who introduces herself as his wife.

Ben Steffan has just arrived on the Island aboard the White Star Line. He is actually a society columnist for the Detroit Post. He is to stay at the luxurious Grand Hotel under the name Frederick Konig, a wealthy industrialist. He will be watching some of the people visiting the island to put together a big story.

When Ben happens to observe Maude’s heartbreak at the loss of Luce, he is taken by her and gets to know her and her family. Maude takes a job as a maid at the Grand Hotel working long hours at a job literally beneath her. Along the way, she meets and helps other young women such as herself. Her friendship with “Frederick” continues to blossom.

There is a rumor that the wealthiest woman in America has taken an “undercover” position on the Island as she observes people and how places are run. Who is this woman and why is she here? After her heartbreak from Luce’s rejection, does she dare open her heart to “Frederick?”

This is a book with lots of different stories all intertwining together. I admit that there were a couple of times that I got a bit confused but was able to finally bring them all together. This is a clean, Christian novel that readers are sure to enjoy.

What an intriguing, inspiring novel penned by Carrie Fancett Pagels, set during an integral time of change in our country’s history! The dialog, family secrets, very likable characters, faith of those characters, and plot twists make for a Christian novel that is a romance and so much more. Secrets, treachery, and deceit are abundant in the almost pristine perfection of an 1895 Mackinac Island summer.

Maude is a young woman who loves where she lives. She and her father, Peter and younger brother Jack are year-round residents on lovely Mackinac Island that enjoys a high volume of summer tourists. The Winds of Mackinac Inn has been in her mother’s family for many years, but since her mother’s death a year earlier, her father wants to sell it and move inland to a city where Jack can train seriously as an Olympic runner. If only Maude’s fiancé had not returned with a new bride! The betrayal stung, but perhaps not as much as her father’s refusal to let her run the inn by herself. He would have only allowed it if she and Greyson had married.

Maude tries to get experience in more aspects of running an inn by working at the Grand Hotel as a maid, giving her a new appreciation for the staff at the Inn. Ada, the Housekeeping Manager, has kindly given Maude opportunities by varying the areas to which she was assigned. Ada has secrets of her own; Maude fears what the results might be of Ada’s visits with her father.

Ben Steffans is a guest at the Grand Hotel who, from the moment he first saw Maude, was enchanted by her. He also has a secret. He is a reporter for a Detroit newspaper there on assignment, masquerading as Friedrich Konig, a German industrialist. His assignment includes writing about men who come to Mackinac Island to find a wealthy bride. He uncovers truths demanding a decision: reveal the secrets for personal -gain or protect those involved and retain his honor.

The author has gifted to us an exciting Christian novel that is hard to put down, demonstrating her talents as a top-notch historical fiction writer. I was drawn to it as I wanted to find out more about this little treasure far upstate from where I was born, and found more treasures than I thought the island could hold! Some characters walk out how it looks to seek the Lord’s direction for their lives and several spiritual lessons, including letting go of deception and secrets and doing the right thing no matter the consequences. The author’s stunning descriptions bring the setting to life so well that one can almost smell the gardenias, lilacs and fresh, crisp air.

This reader found herself rooting for two characters who are strongly attracted to each other, even though each are locked behind their respective facades. Many of the characters are not who they seem to be, kind of like in real life. I enjoy the authentic historical touches, including national pride for the Olympic team, the visit from Mark Twain, and the author’s notes regarding her research. Plot twists change assumptions made about some characters, sometimes highlighting the growth of those involved. There are several surprises! I highly recommend this novel to those who enjoy well-written historical fiction that is Christian, highlighted with heartfelt prayers, and includes special characters in a setting that will stay with the reader long after turning the final page.

From a grateful heart: I received this eBook from the publisher and NetGalley, and this is my honest review.

Oh my word! I absolutely adored Carrie Fancett Pagels' work. She is fantabulous with creating her characters in a richly detailed way. The beautiful detail she added to the backdrop of the story really made me feel as though I was on the breathtaking Mackinac Island.

Maude and Ben, and even Jack, quickly stole my heart. Sweet little Jack had me smiling more than once! The betrayal that Maude feels when she sees her "intended" married to another woman, was quickly felt in my heart. But, when she "runs" into Ben, the sparks were there and I loved watching their story unfold.

Ms. Pagels fills this novel with wonderful descriptions to make the story blossom before the reader. The messages from God of forgiveness, hope, faith and love are woven perfectly throughout. This wonderfully chiseled,4 star book kept me turning the pages long into the night and I highly recommend it to all historical fiction lovers! The characters, the plot line, the messages will all steal your heart and take you on a whirl wind right through Mackinac Island, leaving you wanting more. Visiting Mackinac Island is now at the top of my bucket list thanks to Ms. Pagels!

I love all of the My Heart Belongs series, they are all well written and romantic.

My Heart Belongs on Mackinac Island is about Maude Welling. She and her family run an inn on this island town and they have many people that visit for the season. Maude's mother has died and the terms of the will are still being worked out. Maude's father has run the inn and Maude is desperate to prove to him that she, a woman, can run the inn. She has been hurt by her longtime boyfriend who returned the island and was married. Maude's world has been turned upside down. She comes up with a plan to disguise herself as a maid and work at the Grand Hotel. Thinking that this would help prove her capabilities.

Ben Steffans, a reporter from Detroit, comes to the island disguised as a wealthy man. He is writing a story about how men come to the island to find a wealthy woman and marry her. He runs into Maude and is smitten. As Ben continues his disguise he uncovers several things that are not as they seem. Ms. Fox at the Grand Hotel resembles a very rich woman he has been following, Maude's ex-boyfriend's new wife has secrets, and now Maude is working as a maid. As Ben continues to get to know Maude he loses his heart to her but the only way he can support her is by breaking a big story.

Soon all secrets come to life and hard decisions have to be made. Maude has to decide if she can forgive Ben for lying to her and possibly exposing the secrets of her family. Ben has to decide whether getting the story is worth the people it hurts to get it. In the end, one little boy makes it all clear.

A great book set on a beautiful island. Maude gets her heart broken or (does she really?) when her "fiancé" Greyson marries someone else and shows back up on the Island.
Maude and Ben both posing as someone else. Maude is trying to prove to her Dad that she is able to run the Inn that has been her family for years by working as a maid in another Inn on the Island. Ben posing as someone else trying to get a story and get a prominent position in the news office.
With Ben and Maude both keeping secrets, it's hard for them to trust one another. Will they both make the right decisions? Will they forgive each other? Will Maude's Dad forgive his Wife and Mother-in-law for what they did?
The characters were great and there's adventures to follow. Oh and I loved little brother because he was always into something.
I enjoyed reading about a real place that was well researched and that the author actually had been there. I almost felt like I was having a vacation on the Island. I would for sure love to see Mackinac Island and just stay awhile.
Read this story and enjoy Island life and all the twist and turns.

I have been enjoying the "My Heart Belongs" series. This one takes place in Michigan on Mackinac Island, a place I have been to several times as it is my home state! The era and history of the Grand Hotel was interesting. The identity changes of Ben, the newspaper reporter trying to get his big story and Maude, the jilted islander make this a good story. Looking forward to many more stories in this series and more from Carrie Fancett Pagels.

A little deception went a long ways in this wonderful story. A story of life of the rich being targeted by men and women looking for a marriage to success and wealth! A wonderful family story, with a little sweet romance! I really enjoyed this story and hope there will be a continuing series with these interesting characters.. I was gifted a copy and my review is voluntary...

Mackinac Island 1895: you have the year round residents versus the wealthy summer guests. Men needing financial gain courting wealthy women. Young Maude trying to prove herself to her father by working as a servant in a hotel without him knowing. She wants to gain control of their inn on the island but her father's against it. A newspaper reporter trying to make editor by writing a story on the island under disguise, using a different name. Maude takes a shine to him but what will she think when she finds out he's not who she thinks he is? The story unfolds and the characters think they know what they want, they think they know what's best for them but in the end only God knows what's best for each and everyone if they'll listen and follow his guidance. A verse in Proverbs, "Man plans his way but the Lord orders his steps."
I really enjoyed this book and how everything all worked out throughout, and not always what I initially thought. It held my attention. And I loved the setting! Mackinac Island is described as a beautiful place, somewhere I'd like to visit someday.

It is a real place, can you image such beauty being real? I know I was drifting along the shore of my mind while reading this latest hit from Carrie. It is a sweet, historical romance that has been cultivated in faith.

Character: Maude Welling, Ben Steffans, are two of the best written characters I have ever read. Maude is smart and after coming across her intended, married to someone else, she is quick to set her goals high. That was a great point about this character, Gilded Age gal wanting to succeed and prove she is worthy of more than most women were seen to be. Ben, I don’t agree with your fibbing but I love the investigative reporting and your attempt at being “German”. Ben is also striving to be better and more than what he has been seen as. This was a nice point that both characters shared, the want to be more to the world or island.

Cover: Wow! How do you not want a Mary Poppins moment of jumping into the cover. I can smell the watery air, and hear the gulls just looking at it. The cover would easily win over any cover judge person.

Setting: This was a dream to read, and it happens to be a reality and historically built. Well, the island is reality and landmarks as well. But sadly, this isn’t the Gilded Age but, I will just pretend. The author did a superb job of research and detailing events. It felt extremely real even though it’s fiction.

Overall: This book was brilliantly written, like a summer breeze it floats through a readers senses and creates a superb home for their mind. Maude and Ben are charming, romantic and strong characters that have this reader wanting more!

This is a delightful historical romance!

I fell in love with the characters in this book quickly because they are amazingly well developed. There is an incredible variety of personalities which made the whole story come alive.

There were a number of people that at times were pretending to people that they weren’t. Some of them were shown for what they really were from the very beginning. Some of them were kept as a mild mystery for much of the book. It was a lot to fun to try and figure who was really who. I was enthralled to see how the relationships between many of the different characters would develop.

This is the best book I've read by Carrie Fancett Pagels to date. I love her descriptions of Mackinac Island and because of them I would really love to visit the island. I have read other My Heart Belongs books by Barbour books and they are all very enjoyable. I have to say my favorite character is Jack, what an imp! What a fabulous and strong lady Maude is and I love her name and love how Jack called her Muddie! Maude and Ben's romance I wasn't sure of it lasting but I am sure glad it did and it was fun to read about. The plot was strong and I really enjoyed it and feel like I just came back from a trip through time to Mackinac Island.

It’s impossible not to love Maude and Mackinac Island.  Maude is strong and resilient and faces challenges head on, which was a pleasant surprise.  I thought she may be a spoiled little rich girl as she was sipping a cherry phosphate on the first page.  There is so much more to her as I discovered when she goes to work as a maid at the Grand Hotel to prove to her father that she’s capable of managing the Winds of Mackinac Inn.
The description of the Island as written by the author is beautiful.  I could imagine people strolling around enjoying the beauty and relaxing.  It makes me want to visit and experience it for myself.
One of my favorite characters is Jack.. He’s very mischievous and delights in calling Maude, “Muddie”!  He’s  just a young boy full of energy and one that you don’t want anywhere near your bicycle.
I have to say that this is one of my favorite books by this author and a perfect addition to the My Heart Belong series.

I loved the setting of this book from Pagels’ descriptive hand. Oh my goodness – the descriptions of Mackinac Island and the Grand Hotel have me wanting to book a vacation there right away! You’ll be able to smell the sea air and hear the gulls (safest way to encounter those terrifying creatures is in the pages of a book lol) and see the carriages and bikes. Pagels has done an incredible job with setting here; her love for Mackinac Island comes through vividly in her words.

I love both Maude and Ben, though some of their actions didn’t really make sense to me and their instalove raised my eyebrows a bit. (Ben had only just met Maude … very briefly … and already is thinking sentiments like, ‘in my dreams she calls me darling’.) Still – their growing friendship made me smile more than once and a couple scenes had me reaching for my fan!

Bottom Line: My Heart Belongs on Mackinac Island is a sweet romance with vivid scenery and intriguing characters. One Goodreads reviewer said that Pagels “rolls up romance, twists, turns, mystery, scandal, intrigue, inspiration, humor, and adventure into a sweet story beautifully” and I completely agree! Each book I read by this author is even better than the last! If you love progressive era/Victorian fiction, you’ll want to grab this book for your TBR pile!

I love when an author can sweep me away to a different era and make me feel like I'm part of the story. Yes I felt like I was watching the story unfold as Maude tries to prove to her father that she is capable of running their Inn. Her father of course doesn't believe a woman can do such a huge undertaking. I loved how Maude was determined to prove him wrong no matter what she had to endure. Her father still thinks that in order to run the Inn Maude must be married. Well we can forget that for now. What does her fiancé do to let Maude know he is not interested in her anymore?

I absolutely loved Frederick Konig. He has led everyone to believe that he is a wealthy German , but what secret is he hiding? I loved the intrigue that surrounded him and his heroism in saving lives. He has shown the town that he can be trusted and people begin to embrace him. The description of the island is breathtaking. I can imagine the beautiful scenery and the ships as they come to dock. As Frederick and Maude get to know each other, will they share their secrets? What does God have in store for them? Will Maude find out why her father's plans are for the Inn ? There are secrets among people who could have a devastating affect on others. I loved how the author gives us wonderful subtle hints along the way that make readers wonder what was to happen to the Inn after Maude's mother passed away. Will the Inn stay in the family or will someone else take it over? What is in a letter that is addressed to Maude? It seems official but will she receive it, or will someone hide it for their own benefit.

The story captures the true meaning of trust, and forgiveness. You don't want to miss this enchanting visit to Mackinac Island.

"Sometimes God has to put us in a place where He can mold us ready us for something new."

Oh my goodness! I felt like I was walking down the streets on Mackinac Island, smelling the horses, dodging the bikes as I took in the incredible views! Our heroine, Maude, is a determined, hardworking young lady who is hoping to take over the running of the Winds of Mackinac, an Inn that has been in her mother's family for generations. However, there seems to be some misunderstanding about that....
An unrequited love, a newspaper reporter traveling incognito and housekeeping at the Grand Hotel are just some of the story lines woven together in masterful fashion by author, Carrie Fancet Pagels, who has outdone herself yet again.

I think this is one of the best books written by this author. I really enjoyed it. And the nostalgia for Mackinac Island. It really made me want to visit the island and area. I love how precious characters were woven in a little. Maude is such a sweet character and Ben is a great hero. The struggles are there with both being someone who they are not. Forgiveness is a need. I really liked Ava Fox as well! Lovely read. I was given a complimentary copy of this book, all opinions are my own.

While the My Heart Belongs series has so far taken readers out to the rugged West for adventures the newest installment has us visiting the popular vacation spot of Mackinac Island. While the island seems like a peaceful vacation destination there is a lot going on and never a dull moment to be had.

I am really loving this series of books and the fact that they are about independent, intelligent and strong women. Carrie Fancett Pagels continues that theme in this story. Maude is described in the book as intelligent and courageous and I believe those words describe her perfectly. I liked that she wanted to prove herself to her father and wouldn't let anything stand in her way. She has a bit of a stubborn streak in her that most females can relate to. Maude was a very likable character. There was a bit of mystery around Ben, a.k.a Frederich, and that made him such an interesting character as I read through the story to find out who he really was. He was a complex character and was the perfect match to Maude.

I enjoyed all of the descriptions in this book. They made me feel as if I were there on the island with all the characters. It was easy to imagine people going about their lives on the island and to also imagine the rich vacationing there.

If you have enjoyed the other books in this series you are sure to enjoy this one. It isn't necessary to read the other books though as they all stand on their own. This is a great book for fans of historical fiction and those looking for books about strong, independent women.

My Heart Belongs series is a great series to read! If you haven’t read any of them, I recommend you check them out! This book is located in my home state and having been to Mackinac Island numerous times, I could smell the water and the horse poo, see the bikes and the Grand Hotel and it felt really personal to read this. To be around the island, on the water and on the mainland was really something that I could see happening. I enjoyed the characters as they were well-developed. There was some mystery and intense moments and happy endings are the best. A favorite part in the book for me was when the leading female is made aware that the leading man is waiting for her and she’s quick to jump up and prepare herself. Her maid says, “I thought that might put some rise in your shine!”

I really love the My Heart Belongs series. I enjoyed reading “On Mackinac Island” by Carrie Fancett Pagels. Ever since seeing the movie “Somewhere in Time”, I have wanted to visit Mackinac Island and stay at the Grand Hotel. That’s probably not going to happen in my lifetime, so the next best thing is reading about it.

“On Mackinac Island” gave me a glimpse of what the island could have been like in the late 1800’s. It also made me realize just how much work and how many people it takes to run an establishment like that. There are also the mysteries, con games, “beautiful people”, celebrities, and the many, many stories that could be concocted from life on this island.

I thought Dr. Pagels book was very easy to read and gave a snippet of the lives of the islanders and the tourists that probably really did visit the island. I see infinite story lines coming out of this era and location. The romantic plot of this book was very sweet also.

Carrie Fancett Pagels aptly transports us back in time to 1895’s Mackinac Island, Michigan, in My Heart Belongs in Mackinac Island:  Maude’s Mooring.

Maude Welling, her father and her little brother Jack are all still grieving the loss of their mother/wife, though each in very different ways. Maude is more determined than ever to take over the reins of Winds of Mackinac Inn, her father is just as determined she won’t and Jack is determined to become the fastest runner in the United States.

Ms. Pagels descriptive language leaves you feeling the sounds and sights of Mackinac Island, from the grandeur of The Grand Hotel to the impoverishment of the maids. As you read, you feel as if you have truly stepped back in time to a very different life and era. Plus, interspersed throughout the book are tidbits and gems of mystery, love and betrayal.

I enjoyed reading another of the My Heart Belongs collection, and the fact it was written by Ms. Pagels made it even more enjoyable.

I received this book from the author through NetGalley and Barbour Publishing. However, I was under no obligation to post a review.
I also posted my review on FB, B & N and CBD.

Well, Carrie Fancett Pagels has given me the travel bug....I'd never heard of Mackinac Island and now I'm dying to visit there and see the buildings and scenery. Maude had every right to love the apparently enchanting island and to do everything within her power to keep her family's inn safely within the family and the Mackinac Island community. It was my desire initially to become a journalist for a newspaper so I read with intrigue of Ben's position as spy to cover a story with such authenticity.
I am looking forward to reading the next book in the My Heart Belongs series. The book is full of such vivid description that I felt as if I were actually walking along with the characters. I felt such compassion for Ben and Maude. Both of them seemed to be in positions where they felt they were at risk of losing so much. Maude feared losing the inn and her home and Ben feared being discovered at the Grand Hotel.
I give this book a rating of 5 stars and highly recommend it to readers.

Firstly thanks to Netgalley for my review copy.

I have read a couple other My Heart Belong books this year all set in the west and more westerns. It was refreshing to have a different location and era. I really loved the story. It made me want to go there and see the island and to also taste some of the famous fudge.

Maude wants to run the inn that has been in her family for generations but her father thinks she needs to be married. When the man she hoped to marry breaks her heart she sets about trying to prove herself to her father. On the flip side Ben is posing as a wealthy industrialist when he is in fact a journalist who is trying to expose how men come to the island pretending to be rich to snare a heiress at the famous hotel. Ben is really struggling with his assignment as he feels more comfortable with the locals than the wealthy. He has a story that has scarred him.

As both Maude and Ben seem to be coming closer there are issues arising they need to deal with.

I loved the different area of America which I haven't read about before. The places are real with the story fiction, and we get a feel of what it would be like to live on the island. Also what it is like when you live year round on a place where in the summer the wealthy will come and stay at The Grand or other Hotels. It then becomes very much a division of the people. There are also other issues that both Maud and Ben have to deal with, which added to the story.

I really loved the story and have heard Carrie will be writing about one of the other characters in an upcoming book.

This was such a wonderfully written story. From the very beginning I found myself attached to Maude’s character. I could see myself standing next to her while she waited for her beloved to arrive, and trying to comfort her when she saw him with another woman. In fact, I felt as if I was on Mackinac Island throughout the entire story. I could see the Grand Hotel, the Winds of Mackinac Inn, and even the doctors office. Carrie paints a vivid picture of life on the island. So beautiful in fact that I would love to visit it!

In addition to the beauty of the island, there is a lot going on in the book. People pretending to be someone else, a young lady hiding the fact that she is working somewhere, a mysterious love, and some family property in jeopardy. You learn that appearances can be deceiving, and just when you think you know what’s going on, along comes a twist that you didn’t see coming. Or at least I didn’t! The story is fast paced, and it is important that you pay attention to even the smallest details. They may give you clues to what unfolds later in the book! I caught them after giving it a second glance.

Historical fans will certainly like this book, but I think even modern days readers will find they enjoy it too. All the parts of the stories will hold your interest, cause you to gasp and laugh, and keep the pages turning until you reach the end! I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

From what I've read, this book is a part of a series. I haven't read any of the other stories in the set, so I would say this can stand alone.

Do I dare admit that I hadn't ever heard of Mackinac Island before hearing about this book? I thought maybe it was a fictional place, but have since discovered that it's anything but made up and now, it's taken a place on my bucket list of places to visit. Pagels does a great job of bringing this island to life.

The story starts out with an immediate heartbreak, which bonded me to the island's sweetheart, Maude, from the get-go. A slight mystery blankets the plot, while a growing romance starts to blossom, but it's the characters that truly won me over. The unique situations they each found themselves in and the scrapes they work themselves out of really caught my interest, especially with Maude's younger brother, Jack. I loved the way the relationships were all inner-connected and the way the characters worked through issues to arrive at the ending.

This is a great read for those who enjoy Historical Fiction with a dash of mystery and romance. I felt like I was sitting in the island breeze and savoring a phosphate, and really enjoyed my stay within the pages of this book.

Content: mild romance; mild+ religious elements.

Ever since I heard Carrie was writing this story, I've been waiting anxiously to read it. I love all of her books, and Mackinac Island is a place I've always wanted to visit. Add in the fact it was being released in my birthday month, and I couldn't have been much happier!

The writing in this book makes you feel as if you are on Mackinac Island with Maude, her family, and friends. All of the descriptions of the various locations are amazing!

Several of the characters have issues they are dealing with throughout the story, and it is refreshing to see them turn to God in their crisis moments. The romance between Maude and Ben has some humorous moments, as does the relationship between Maude and her younger brother, Jack, who is a daredevil and an imp.

It was a pleasant surprise when Mark Twain visited the island in the middle of the story. The author has a wonderful explanation in her notes about the idea to incorporate The Prince and The Pauper in her story.

I look forward to reading Carrie's next story in this series, which will feature Maude's BFF.

This book was absolutely precious! I loved every moment of Maude and Friedrich/Ben's love story. It was sweet, but left no doubt that they cared for one another and admired each other greatly. Even the secondary characters were easy to fall in love with, and I especially enjoyed revisiting a few of the characters I had met in other books by Carrie Fancett Pagels. This one left me with a smile on my face!

The characters are endearing, brave, well developed, and well written. Even though the book is part of a series it can be read as a stand alone book. The book is full of intriguing plots, sub-plots, characters, and settings. The author does a nice job of mixing fiction and non-fiction together without making the book historically inaccurate. The author does a great job of describing the island of Mackinac, she really captures the beauty of the island. I have visited Mackinac island numerous times throughout my life and I could picture the all the different places on the island that the author uses throughout the book.
