Thank you to Thomas Nelson/Nelson Books for the ARC through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This was part poetry collection, part newspaper cuttings and posters from interviews, and part wit and wisdom from a variety of Chesterton's writings. As a huge fan of Chesterton's Orthodoxy, I liked learning more about his other passions like poetry and criticism of Charles Dickens.

This books is somewhat like a sampler platter of his life's works, but it left me wanting more context for some of the quotes. At times it felt like taking the quotes out of their context and firing them one after another on the reader was not necessarily the best way to enjoy Chesterton.

However, it did serve to inspire me to read more of his books which are still on my to-be-read shelf, as well as adding a few more to said list, so I think it accomplished its goal.

G.K. Chesterton on Life: Encountering His Classic Wit and Wisdom for Today is available now (pub date: April 21, 2026).

G. K. Chesterton on Life is a collection of quotes and writing from Chesterton's oeuvre curated by Kevin Belmonte. Released 21st April 2026 by Harper Collins on their Thomas Nelson imprint, it's 224 pages and is available in hardcover and ebook formats.

Many of the quotes are very short, snippets really. There's no in-depth commentary, but the collection is arranged lovingly, thematically, around short chapters such as: faith, philosophy, nature, poetry, wit, etc. Each chapter has a number of quips/quotes/comments, and is sparsely illustrated with facsimile photos and illustrations.

Although the material is not presented in any context, there are numerous takeaways for modern readers. It might be a good introduction to readers unfamiliar with GKC's work, or for die-hard fans to carry around for a quick bit of inspiration. It would also be a good choice for public library acquisition.

Three and a half stars.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

Thank you for the advanced copy from NetGalley!

As someone who loves Chesterton’s writing, I thoroughly enjoyed this collection of quotes. The book is organized by topic and contains a number of excellent quotes from his writings (and others’ writing about him). I think this is a great coffee table book or gift book for someone who either loves Chesterton or loves reading good quotes.

If you are unfamiliar with his work, this might not be the best introduction to him. However, I don’t think you necessarily need to know everything about him to appreciate some of his truly spectacular observations.

Here are a couple of examples:
“The Christian ideal has not been tried and found wanting. It has been found difficult; and left untried.”

“We make our friends; we make our enemies, but God makes our next door neighbors.”

“A good novel tells the truth about its hero, but a bad novel tells us the truth about its author.”

“I am not certain that brevity is the soul of wit, but brevity is an excellent substitute for wit.”

“Men do not quarrel about the meaning of sunsets.”
