Description

There's joy in eating under the stars--and now deliciousness, too!

“Roughing it” doesn’t have to include the food you eat when you’re in the backcountry. Even when you’re miles from a full spice rack and only have a single-burner backpacking stove to work with, you can—and should—eat well. Best Served Wild offers up good backcountry food meant to be shared with friends around an open campfire. In Best Served Wild, adventure writer Brendan Leonard and food writer Anna Brones team up to bring you recipes for taking your backcountry food game beyond freeze-dried backpacking meals and brick-like energy bars. They share recipes for everything from single day adventures to overnight trips to multi-day outings—real food for real adventures.

Denver-based Brendan Leonard is the creator of Semi-Rad.com, and his writing has appeared in Climbing, Alpinist, Backpacker, Outside, Adventure Cyclist, Sierra, National Geographic Adventure, and dozens of other publications. He is the author of several books, including Sixty Meters to Anywhere, The New American Road Trip Mixtape, Classic Front Range Trad Climbs, and Make It ‘Til You Make It.

Anna Brones is the founder of FoodieUnderground.com, and her work has been featured in The New York Times, Gadling, GOOD, Women's Adventure, The Guardian, and many other publications. Seattle-based, she is the author of several books, including The Culinary Cyclist, Fika: The Art of the Swedish Coffee Break (Ten Speed Press, 2015), Paris Coffee Revolution, and Hello, Bicycle: An Inspired Guide to the Two-Wheeled Life.

I am not too much into the great outdoors to the extant of the authors anymore, but there are a few recipes I may try in my own home. Back in the day we always has gorp or fruit leather on us when we went anywhere! Some of the recipes and adventures brought back good memories! I may need to get out the old albums and take revisit with past adventures! Younger folks will, those full pf adventure, will enjoy this book. Those who haven't yet gone an an adventure will be inspired!

As an avid backpacker and car camper, new recipes are a must to keep things fresh. While I do like meat in my trail food and this is more a vegetarian cookbook, it is true that a lot of these recipes can be modified to add chicken or tuna etc... While the recipes here are more basic than what I do look for nowadays for outdoor food fare, this is a great beginners guide for people just starting out.

No campfire or grilling or Dutch oven recipes here! Firstly, let me say how happy I am that there is an anti-Dutch oven screed in this book. Once I went on a camping trip with a guy who brought a Dutch oven and it was a nightmare. He dumped coals everywhere we went. It was a huge ordeal for something that was really just a freakin pot. Anyway, none of that. The book divides recipes into day trips and overnight trips, but really what you need to know is that there are recipes for you to cook at home before you leave on your trip, and there are some to cook during your trip. The home recipes are mostly energy bars and breads and such. The camp stove recipes include a delicious-looking simple pad Thai, veggie stir-fry, some cookies and breads to fry up in the pan, and lots of oatmeal and couscous recipes. And chocolate and camp coffee! This book seems most useful for adults doing a backpacking trip or car camping with friends and wanting to get beyond hot dogs and eggs. I would definitely want to try some of these recipes on my car camping trips with my kids. The photography is beautiful and makes me want to get outside and chow down. And drink some delicious coffee.
