A much needed book in this catergory.

A great selection of poetry from a great poet. This should help in getting children more involved with poetry too.

Poetry for Kids: Walt Whitman introduces young readers to one of America's greatest poets. There are four sections, devoted to different aspects of Whitman's life and works. The first section, 'Starting from Paumanok’ looks at his earliest works and inspirations. The second section, 'Walt Whitman, a Kosmos, of Manhattan the Son’, focuses on works of his artistic maturity. Section three, 'The Wound-dresser’, showcases Whitman's Civil War inspired poetry. The final section, ‘The Good Grey Poet’, looks at poetry from his elder years.

Each section defines unusual or uncommon words for the reader, including Walt-centric words such as 'camerado’, his word for a (true and loyal) friend. At the very end is a section with brief explanations of each poem or poem excerpt within. Adding to the atmosphere of the book are colourful pictures on every page depicting aspects of the poem in question, with Walt himself wandering the pages.

📚📚📚📚📚 Highly recommended. Great introduction to Whitman's poetry, and to an appreciation of poetry in general.

'Poetry for Kinds: Walt Whitman' by Walt Whitman with editing by Karen Karbiener, PhD and illustrations by Kate Evans is a well curated introduction to the life and work of one of America's greatest poets.

The included poems are broken up by section based on phases in Whitman's life. There are poems about his childhood, his time as a wound-dresser in the Civil War and as an older man.

The poems are many times excerpts and include annotations to explain difficult phrases (or ones that the poet made up). There are poems which show that he wanted to abolish slavery and that he supported the rights of women.

At the end of the book, there is a section telling when the poem was written and what Walt Whitman was likely thinking. Each page also has illustrations that fit with the poem and the poet's age.

It's a really good introduction to this great poet. His style may seem atypical for children since his poems don't have meter or rhyming, but I think it's really well presented.

I love, love, love Walt Whitman...truly.

I enjoyed this version "for kids"...seeing many of his stories illustrated and (in quite a few cases), heavily cut down for appropriateness. After all, many of Whitman's poems, when examined, are not precisely designed for children. I was surprised to see some of the poem's title, knowing what sort of lines the full poems contained...however, everything was perfectly whittled down appropriately for the target audience.

Little thing about this that I really liked, giving the audience...the explanation of certain words after each poem or excerpt that are no longer common in our vernacular.

I was very impressed with this volume. It has poems and excerpts of poems by Walt Whitman. Each poem has vocab words define that may give the kids trouble. It has lovely illustrations that accomany each poem. It also has brief explainations of the poems in the back to help kids understand the context. I would highly recommend this to kids who are interested in poetry. I received a copy of this book from Net Galley in exchange for an honest review. It will be published on May 1st, 2017.

This was a bit hard to read on my computer...I think it was the font. I am happy to see that you are making traditional poetry accessible to children.

I thought this was a very well selected anthology of poems by Walt Whitman. The artwork and the vocabulary notations as well as the notes in the back will make Whitman's poetry even more available to students.

This is a well written book. Nice illustrations. Good choice of poems, and who knows, perhaps children Weill get into this, and enjoy it. However, though I know Walt Whitman is a very important poet, and that we should all introduce children to reading him, as an adult I found I was only drawn to a few of these poems, so I wonder how children would take to them.

The book itself is nicely done, though I would have had the history timeline notes with each poem, so we would understand what was important about each poem, such as "O Captain My Captain". This was written about Licoln's assaination, which Whitman was a contemparty of. To just present the poem without even a little background does not make a child understand it any more than what it says on the surface.

Of course, not all poems have to bone explained, and, as a child, I loved poetry, and still have my big book of poetry, which, like this book, do not explain the poem's background next to the poem.

This is an excellent introduction for children to the beauty of poetry - it is a lovely book - 5 stars!!

This is a nice introduction to Whitman's poetry. I would introduce it to students after they are already familiar with easier poets. Because of its format, this book is less intimidating than a collection intended for adults.
