Description

A 2018 Best STEM Book K-12 (National Science Teachers Association and the Children's Book Council)

All hurricanes are made of air, water and energy; How Could We Harness a Hurricane? explores how humankind may be able to channel those elements for helpful purposes.

Scientists and engineers have yet to design a way to weaken or steer a hurricane. Thas doesn’t mean they haven’t been thinking about how it could work, though! How Could We Harness a Hurricane? and legendary science author Vicki Cobb are here to tell that story.

Vicki clearly explains air pressure, energy, and wind to show you how hurricanes are formed. And like Vicki's other award-winning titles, this book leads youngsters to learn by asking questions

How Can We Harness A Hurricane? offers questions and provides new points of view that may just change peoples' thinking. It shows kids the work scientists and engineers are doing to avoid future disasters. More importantly, Vicki Cobb shares hands-on experiments that make science fun, be it at home or in the classroom.

  • Learn how hurricanes become powerful enough to lift cars and level cities.
  • Learn what engineers are trying to do to prevent destruction and danger, from fortifying buildings to weakening or moving the hurricane itself

A lovely little book for the school age children. Scientific, social and ethical problems are presented in a little wonderful 51 pages of reading material. Book starts off with explanations about the nature of a hurricane. Knowing devastating forces of this phenomenon and reasons behind it, Cobb guides to a possible scientific solutions, and even points which projects are being funded by giants like Bill Gates. At the end we are presented with possible solutions, but also consequences to them. Bonus glossary at the very end! I particularly enjoyed this one, and would get them for the younger generation in my family; Cobb's book doesn't only tell children what to think, one is left with a food for the thought.

I did enjoy this book and thought it was crammed full of interesting information and facts that would be ideal for school age children, even I learnt from it - 5 stars and the glossary at the end was a nice touch!!

Books about weather, especially "bad" weather, are generally a safe bet with young readers. I'm fond of the approach this one takes. By framing it with the titular question, Cobb is able to explore not only the mechanics of hurricanes but how we've learned about them. And I like nonfiction that leaves the reader considering possibilities. Add in some truly awe inspiring photos and you've got a solid selection.
