Description
A Realistic and Accessible Portrayal of a Child Living with Epilepsy
In I Spark Like Lightning, Jen explains what it’s like to live with epilepsy. Most of the time, her brain is full of electricity that sends signals to tell her body what to do. But sometimes, the signals get mixed up, like a lightning storm, and she has seizures. They can happen any time—at home, during ballet class, even at the beach. It’s hard sometimes, but there are a lot of people who love her and help keep her safe. With the help of her family, friends, and her service dog, Hamilton, Jen manages her epilepsy and appreciates the lightning as part of who she is.
- Offers an honest portrayal of life with epilepsy, what it’s like to experience seizures, and how kids manage it

An inspiring book about epilepsy, dance, and loving yourself the way you are. It’s about not just focusing on what you don’t like about your brain but remembering all the wonderful things it does. It informs in a simple way about what epilepsy is, what it feels like when a seizure is coming on, treatment options, and service dogs. Beautiful illustrations and easily understandable for kids. It was helpful to me as a full grown adult to understand what a seizure coming on may feel like and what the after effects are like. I recommend for any kids ages 4-8.
“My brain makes me me. With my powerful brain, I’ve learned to dance with lightning.”
This was a wonderfully informative children’s book on epilepsy. The author, herself has epilepsy, which made the story even more impactful. The illustrations were calming, and they did well to translate the multitude of emotions that come with having a disability. I recommend this for elementary libraries and pediatricians as a resource for anyone needing more information on this topic.
