Unfortunately, it’s a brave move for a woman to go grey – or the more prosaic silver. It’s not something most women embrace in our youth-crazed culture, as it’s seen as ageing, and marks a woman out as being, in that old-fashioned term, “a woman of a certain age”.
But this wonderful handbook is for those wanting to liberate themselves from the dyeing ordeal, a process that is both expensive and time-consuming, and possibly even unhealthy, too. This book shows a range of women, of all ages, some of whom have greyed early, and they are all vibrant, healthy, and proudly silver, and beautiful with it. You also get to see the various growing out photos, some of which are not that pretty to look at – but as Massey advises, there are various ways to make the transition. And looking at the women with before dyed hair, and their natural silver, it’s easy to see how dyed hair can even make someone look quite drained and vitality-less. There are also recipes for hair treatments, as grey hair requires different hair products. Embracing your natural silver is a highly personal choice however – and not for everyone, of course. But if you’re thinking of ditching the dye and need some inspiration, and positive stories around the process, this is a definite must-read. Grey doesn’t have to mean old or dowdy – and this book will show you how to silver with flair.

I loved this book as I made the decision to stop coloring 5 years ago and love my hair. Being grey and silver in todays youth oriented society is a major decision for women. This book helps give us support , reasons and sound advice for those just starting to go grey. My hair took 4 years to grow out and during that time I did feel insecure and was ridiculed in public. Youth still ridicule me in public but now I own it and laugh at them or call them on their rudeness.
I wish I had read this book when I started the process. Thank you to the author for the support, for your compassion and for innately recognizing that our power as older women evolves even higher once we free ourselves from hair color. My feeling is after a certain age you should stand tall as who you really are and own your grey and silver, not giving into a male oriented youth based society that predicates women's value on how they look in hair color. If your not comfortable with your true hair color after 50 then you don't know who you are. We are proud, we are many and we are beautiful with our shiny natural highlights . Thank you this is a wonderful read I highly recommend . Well Done ! This book will convince you to dump your salon, stop paying for your hair colorists Mercedes payment and free yourself to be who you are.

From the authors of Curly Girl (a book which saved my life as a teenage) comes this fabulous new manual on making the bold choice to proudly go silver, and do it with grace. I've got a few years yet my self before grey hairs start appearing, but you can bet this book will be in my hands by that point!

I received a copy of this book for an honest review from NetGally.

I've been dying my hair for years and have always been frustrated with the idea of covering the grey. I am the type of woman who doesn't wear make-up and likes to be as natural as possible, but the idea of not colouring my hair intimidated me - especially after the many comments I would receive when my roots would show.

After reading Massey's book, I felt myself becoming more and more comfortable with the notion. I even began speaking to friends about it and they took the plunge first! Now we are a group of women who proudly show our silver streaks!

This offers up a combination of the whys and how-tos of letting your hair naturalize (in terms of color). It offers great advice for growing out artificial coloring, and for selecting products to help your hair be its healthiest and shine to its best advantage. I liked reading the vignettes about women embracing their silver as well as the descriptions of the varied individualized processes to choose from when growing into a gorgeous head of natural color, with stunning photography accompanying each story. If you've been thinking about going silver versus coloring, this will give you much to think on when making that decision.
I voluntarily read an advanced review copy provided by the publisher via Netgalley and I offer my opinions in response.

Silver is the new black, blonde and brown… From the author of Curly Girl, Silver Hair, comes a guide to letting your hair go silver. Massey, a hairstylist for three decades, includes testimonials and pictures from herself and from women of various ages who decided to bite the bullet and let their hair go natural. Her message to those who want do it is to “embrace your natural hair and do it for you and no one else”. One myth is that silver hair will age you or look unprofessional. She says that as long as you take care of your hair and yourself you will look great. In fact, she has many women who go silver who never go back to dying their hair again. She also suggests some hair products and home remedies to make that transition easier from dyed to silver and to keep your hair in good condition.

As a convert myself at 54 years old, I agree completely with the advice she provides in this great handbook. I have received so many compliments on my silver hair and wish I had started sooner. It is true that the texture of your hair will change so you will need to change the hair products you use. I also found that I had to change my makeup and clothing colors as well because my hair color was so much lighter. Ms. Massey discusses this in the book also. My advice to you is to take a chance. Every person is different and every hair color is different, but I promise you will welcome not having to pay to dye your hair again and that you will love the results!

Thank you to Ms. Massey, Workman Publishing Company, and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to review this book.
