Description

Divorce is a difficult topic for any parent or educator to explain to a child, perhaps even more so when the child has Autism Spectrum Disorder or other special needs. This book is designed specifically to help children with these additional needs to understand what divorce means.

Using a question and answer format, it explores the changes and feelings a child may experience during a divorce, and provides ideas to help cope with this life change. Illustrated with SymbolStix, which uses a symbol-based language for visual thinkers, this book explains a difficult topic to children who might otherwise struggle to understand it, and gives additional guidance for parents and carers.

Divorce is a tricky topic for children to understand, and even more so if the children of said divorce are on the autism spectrum or have learning needs, which means that they are used to routine and struggle when their routine is broken or information is given to them in a less literal way. This book is designed to help explain what divorce means in a simple way for any such child, set out in a question and answer format.

This book emphasises - very importantly - that the divorce is purely to do with the adults involved in the marriage and nothing to do with the children. The topic is explained in three different ways: firstly the long story version, secondly in a short story picture version using symbols, and finally a guide for parents in sharing their divorce story. It address the main questions that children seem to have and reassures them in a very simple way.

A great resource to have to hand for any parents who are going through a divorce.

I like the questions/answer style of text. The illustrations were engaging and appropriate for the students. I will use this with students in my counseling office.
