Chock full of interesting history, archival and modern photos, and authentic blueprints and garden designs. Will appeal to readers who enjoy gardening, architecture, British and American history, design, and more.

I have always been a fan of Arts and Crafts architecture and design but was unaware of its impact in the garden. It was interesting to read how the Arts and Crafts style went beyond these and that the garden design was considered to be an intrinsic part of the house design.
The appealing front cover beckons the reader to find out more. There are lots of super photos, plans and beautiful illustrations throughout the book which enhance the writing.
A comprehensive book divided into fourteen chapters giving the reader a very interesting insight into architects and designers of this movement alongside examples of their creations. I loved reading it.
Thank you to NetGalley for my digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Gardens of the Arts & Crafts Movement is a meticulously researched and written treatise of the subject written by landscape historian Judith B. Tankard. Produced by Timber Press, with an expected publication date of 27th Nov, 2018, this is a solid book, weighing in at 300 pages densely packed with historical info, period source material and photographs.

The book is logically divided into chapters which explain the concepts and lead the reader (relatively painlessly) through a great deal of gardening and architectural history and the theory behind the movement and its subsequent influence on modern gardening. There are specific chapters which showcase many of the houses owned by the leading names of the arts & crafts movement. William Morris' homes, Red House and Kelmscott, are represented as well as designs created and implemented by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Gertrude Jekyll, and many others.

This is emphatically not a how-to DIY gardening book. These are historically significant gardens mostly associated with the great houses of England. That's not to say that there aren't any takeaways for modern gardeners (on a much smaller more intimate scale). The last 2 chapters are specifically aimed at contemporary gardeners and include an interesting and enlightening philosophical discussion of garden design. The icons of gardening history are here en masse. I didn't count the times Mawson, Jekyll, et al. were mentioned, but they are certainly very well represented in this text. I will also add that even the chapters specifically aimed at modern gardeners are mostly applicable to the 'budget no object' type of gardens (of the rich and famous). The book is full of breathtaking gardens photographed meticulously and on a grand scale.

Final thoughts. Even if you do not now and have never had a demesne, there's a boatload of dream material here. This book is meticulously researched, academic, and well written, but the author writes deftly and I felt a good rapport with the material. The photography is luscious and the historical material and architectural drawings are lovely.

Available in ebook and hardcover formats, well worth a look.

Five stars, for people interested in history and theory, not for practical DIY info.

The first thing that attracted me to this book was the gorgeous cover! Beautiful flowers, plus a font that has an Arts & Crafts feel. In fact, the artwork and photography throughout the book is exquisite! But, this book is not just about gardens. It tells the full story of the Arts & Crafts and Craftsman movements, integrating the gardens with the other aspects of this design philosophy. Photography is not spared in this book--there are countless illustrations. And, it concludes with advice for creating some of these design features in your own garden. Lovely book!

GARDENS OF THE ARTS AND CRAFTS MOVEMENT is a gorgeous book to page through and get lost in. I adore this era and think anyone who loves art, gardening, architecture, and design would fully enjoy this book. The author describes the rich legacy of the Movement, and its important role in defining the garden as an essential component of the home. She also surveys era-related garden design and development, presenting an array of representative homes and gardens. Includes nearly 300 beautiful illustrations and photographs with examples from across Europe and North America. Highly recommended!

Beautiful and interesting, Gardens of the Arts and Crafts Movement is full of inspiring pictures and informative chapters. I really enjoyed this book and will probably buy it for the library.

This visual treat allows us to enjoy manor houses and their gardens, in full colour. The garden layouts are shown with paintings of the day, followed by photos of these elegant landscapings. From topiary to architectural layouts, progressing through borders, steps, fountains, pavilions and furnishings, we see the whimsy and elegance created for the owners. Must have been wonderful to have so many outside staff. The gardens also are not generally productive for the table, just flowers and relaxation or contemplation. We see a bluebell wood and a narcissi walk.

I enjoyed the paintings particularly, and they look like the sort which would be on sale on National Trust gifts. From a house in Hampshire built of white chalk, to a red-brick high-chimneyed home, every angle seems photogenic. Frank Lloyd Wright's designs are also featured in America. I would have liked more emphasis on trees because trees could potentially be as old as the garden or older, with sculptural benefit. The book should inspire us to get out and visit these delightful gardens.

I downloaded an e-ARC from Net Galley. This is an unbiased review.

Such a beautiful book! I loved the combination of original plans and current photos. Besides the excellent discussion of the Arts and Crafts aesthetic as well as major influencers of the period, it's a lovely reprieve from our frenetic way of life.

13 chapters in total, Gardens of the Arts and Crafts Movement by Judith B. Tankard is a stunning book if you appreciate garden design. I personally fall in love for gardens and wherever I find books speaking of the topic I try to capture them at the instant.
A selection of houses and garden from Britain but also North American have been taken in consideration.
It's a wonderful book this one; illustrations are amazing and this one is a new and revised edition of a previous one published by Timber Press.
I reviewed various books by Timber Press and the quality of each book is absolutely excellent.
Great also as a gift to a romantic friend.

Highly recommended.

I thank NetGalley and Timber Press for this ebook.

This book Gardens of the Arts and Crafts Movement is really interesting. It is a university book greatly illustrated and documented on garden design from the arts and crafts movement. I like being able to see the different inspirations and characteristics in these gardens.

With this revised edition of the original 2004 book, author Tankard adds to her knowledge base and really solidifies the usefulness of the book. What we have is a nice balance of images, history, background biographies, and presentation. I especially appreciated that there are many images from the era, mostly paintings but also plans, juxtoposed against a modern photograph.

The focus is on the UK side of the Arts and Crafts Movement rather than more international locations. E.g., the US gets a chapter that briefly discuses Chicago, California, and Boston. Within that, there are mentions of other international artists but only in relation to their work in the US or UK (e.g., Eliel Saarinen in Chicago). But perhaps it would have made the book too cumbersome to include other noteworthy gardens, e.g., from the Finnish Romantic Movement and Saarinen's incomparable Hvittrask manor and gardens in Finland. There must be amazing examples on the continent as well as places like Finland.

But that aside, it really is a beautifully presented and intelligently planned thorough piece of research into the Arts and Crafts Garden. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

Judith B. Tankard brings us some wonderful photos and information on the influence of the arts and crafts movement on the way we now garden. There are still those who find the stately formal garden the most soothing and appealing - but for the most part Americans have accepted the appeal of flamboyant color and flashing colors in their gardens. I found this book and it's many photos interesting and learned many new techniques to add to the appeal of my gardens.

I received a free electronic copy of this instructive book from Netgalley, Judith B. Tankard, and Timber Press in exchange for an honest review. Thank you all for sharing your hard work with me.

In this beautiful book, Judith Tankard opened my eyes further to the social and cultural impact of the Arts and Crafts movement on our lives today. The photographs are beautiful, inspiring me to look at my own yard, the gardens around me and the possibilities in touring some of the gardens featured in this gorgeous book. As I read the book, I was inspired and sated by the beauty, by the creativity, originality, and passion for beautiful living. A truly magnificent accomplishment and fine addition to any gardener's bookshelf.

While my customers are largely not the intended audience for this title, I loved it. This second edition updates and expands upon the historical importance and beauty of the wealth of highlighted gardens. I also enjoyed the background early in the book on the Arts and Craft Movement's facets, especially the distinctive architecture.

A very well researched and well written book. I really enjoyed the fact that the images included paintings, and archival images (like drawings and watercolors) as well as current photography. However, it was a bit too UK-focused for my tastes. Honestly -- a chapter that addresses Chicago, Boston and all of California in one fell swoop seems just flatly absurd. Actually examining American offshoots of the Arts and Crafts Movement like Mission Revival and the Prairie School (Frank Lloyd Wright and his integration of architecture with nature in both the Midwest and in California has to be the lowest-hanging fruit imaginable!) would have been more than welcome -- it would have made this book actually feel relevant to me and my environs. As it stands now, the is a beautiful, well-written book that is of highly limited interest to me, my patrons, and anyone I might reasonably recommend books to.

I hope that the author -- or someone writing in the same vein -- writes a companion volume that gives the American Arts and Crafts movement the same treatment. I'd eat that one up.
