With a title like “What Your ADHD Child Wishes You Knew”, it probably isn’t surprising that Dr. Saline puts significant effort into helping the parents reading her book get into the heads of their children with ADHD. Each chapter begins with a quote from a child, or an anecdote aimed at helping us better understand the perspective of children with ADHD, and this perspective shifting approach continues throughout as she addresses common ADHD challenge points, and explains how the affect both parent and child.

Dr. Saline reminds us of the frustration, guilt and shame that common ADHD-related failures provoke in those who have it, and reminds us that our kids are doing the best they can with the skills that they have. One of my favorite quotes comes early on in the first chapter and sets the tone for the book quite effectively, “They do the best they can with their personal resources and know, whether outright or internally, when they are falling short.”

Once we are guided into the minds of their ADHD children, Dr. Saline shares practical, evidence-based tools for helping our children, and ourselves, navigate the waters of ADHD. Her Five C’s (self-Control, Compassion, Collaboration, Cosistency, and Celebration) create a structure that supports children and parents develop the skills they need to move from surviving with ADHD, to thriving with it! She provides exceptional approaches to help parents listen to their kids more effectively, and communicate more clearly in order to create more win-win scenarios within the family.

“What Your ADHD Child Wishes You Knew”, also provides powerful insights into such common ADHD challenges as dealing with strong emotions, homework, friendships, and managing technology. The proven tips and strategies shared are easy to both understand and implement. Not every ADHD book is written by an author who “gets it”; Dr. Saline does. Highly Recommended!
