Description

The primal rule of winning: don’t fall in love with the contender.

Three months shy of her eighteenth birthday, Ness is forced to return to Colorado. Even though it’s been six years, and the wolves of her all-male pack don’t recognize her, she recognizes them. People who shun others because of their gender are hard to forget.

Especially Liam Kolane—son of Heath, the crudest and cruelest Alpha to have ruled the Boulder Pack. Liam is as handsome as he is infuriating, as kind as he is punishing, and he makes Ness’s traitorous heart race, which isn’t good. After all, he’s a Kolane. Like father like son, right?

When Heath dies, Liam vies to become the new Alpha and no one dares challenge him.

Except Ness.

Thus begins a treacherous game.

The rules: winner takes all…including loser’s life.

Fans of Kresley Cole and Kelley Armstrong will devour A PACK OF BLOOD AND LIES.

Thank you to Twilight press for the arc of this amazing book!
I loved it from beginning to end, never guessed the twist, not even an inkling.
I look forward to the next books in the series, it’s going to be a long wait, but so worth it!

A Pack of Blood and Lies is werewolf YA fiction at its finest. Ness is a teenage werewolf shunned by her pack. When circumstances force her to associate with her pack again, she uncovers secrets and lies, which lead her to compete to become the pack alpha. There are fantastic feminist vibes to this story, which made it unique and enjoyable. It also has elements of a potential love triangle, tons of family/pack drama, and lots of mystery.

This is my very first Olivia Wildenstein book and you bet I'm kicking myself for not reading her books sooner.

A Pack of Blood and Lies was such a delightful read! I love Ness' mindful recklessness and the simmering attraction with Liam. The writing was very addictive. And although there really wasn't much when it came to the action aspect of the book, I was never bored. I've read tons of werewolf books but this one has to be one of my top favorites. There was just something about it that really captured my interest- might be the romance, might be hot, sexy Liam, might be Ness' fiery personality, might be the secrets, deceit and mysteries shrouding the story.. the list goes on and on. But whatever it was, I honestly don't care because I LOVE the book so much.
Flew thru this in one sitting and the sleepless night was so worth it!

Now excuse me while go find another Olivia Wildenstein book to devour.

I received an e-arc to read and review. All opinions are my own.

Thank you Netgalley and Twilight Press for the opportunity to review this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This book from beginning to end was spectacular. It's like what if Mare from Red Queen encounters Jacob from Twilight and then meets the Royal werewolf family and fights for the ultimate reign, winner takes all and loser is forced to die. Every page was a new adventure and just when you thought the story is going one direction, it immediately switches gears and takes a whole new turn. Edge of your seat action that will make you keep reading until the end. Olivia Wildenstein did a brilliant job with this story and I am really hoping this will turn into a series because it will circulate very well at our library.

We will definitely consider adding this title to our YFantasy collection at the library. That is why it's an honor to give this book 5 stars.

This was such an exceptional story. It had me completely hooked right from the first page and I didn't want to put it down.

There was plenty of depth to the story with a number of twists and enemies to lovers theme. It was extremely well-written and the author structured the story in a way to keep readers guessing. There were two deaths with the murderers to be uncovered and also a sadness to the story at times. There was also a challenge for pack leadership which was fascinating and I appreciated the strength behind Ness to enter it and to challenge the boys.

The characters were particularly rewarding and I enjoyed the slow and deliberate feel to the romance that built between Ness and Liam and I can't wait to read more.

Highly recommended shifter story.

This book took my entire Sunday and I'm not even mad.

What an angsty, complicated, sexy, tension-filled page turner this was!

After her mother dies of cancer, Ness Clark returns to the place she once called home after six years. Unrecognizable to most at first, Ness' return brings with it demons from her past and unresolved issues that she would rather soon forget. At the center of it all is Liam Kolane - son of the late Alpha - who is now next in line, but Ness has no use for Liam and cared even less about his father. So when Ness challenges for Alpha - to bring change to the Pack (and of course to spite Liam) - all hell breaks loose. Ness with her head strong, fiery personality and Liam with his (misguided at times) Pack mentality are constantly pushing against each other making an already strained relationship even more tenuous. Neither are trusting of the other and both are misunderstood which makes for some very complex (and delicious!) situations. And as the Alpha trials start to heat up so does the sexual tension between Ness and Liam and believe you me, it is a freaking scorcher!

Hate to love troupe is my biggest guilty pleasure and Ness and Liam's story was so good it has to be fattening! Whether they were pushing against each other or colliding together they jumped right off the page. I saw them clear as day and felt their emotions as if I were standing along side them while I may or may not have been experiencing the need to throttle them both..lol.

Rounding out the story are a lot of great secondary characters that I hope to see more of in the next book! Also something equally great..I'm not fully trusting some of those I'm being told to trust, which is always fun!

And speaking of the next book (A Pack of Vows and Tears), while this ending saw a few loose ends tied up it also created new story arcs for the second installment (which I need like yesterday!). Nothing extremely cliffy, but...oh, the things to come!

This was my first with Olivia's writing and if the rest of her books are even remotely close to what I just experienced, I will load up my Amazon cart right now. A Pack of Blood and Lies had my absolute attention from start to finish and I only hope that I can get my hands on the sequel soon! Dear God, make it soon! In the meantime, I can't wait to have this finished copy in my hands for those many future rereads to come because you can bet a hairy werewolves butt that I will be preordering this and recommending to everyone!

4.5 stars

This book was really, really good! I was hooked from the beginning and I ended up enjoying it so much. It's been a while since I've read a book about werewolves (or at least it feels like a while) and I wasn't disappointed with this one.

I loved our main character, Ness. She has a fiery personality and I was rooting for her when she was trying to prove herself. It pissed me off to no end the way the Boulder pack was treating her sometimes so I'm glad she didn't just lie there and took it.

About the romance, at the beginning I hoped something would happen between her and August but I knew she would probably end up with Liam. Even though I'm a bit sad for August, I'm not mad. I ended up liking Liam and they were cute together.

Thank you for giving me an ARC to read and review via Netgalley.

PS: I signed up to get an Arc for the second book. I can't wait! :D

Hey, book dragons! So I just finished an amazing book! And I really want to share my thoughts and feeling about it with you guys.

So the book I just finished was A Pack of Blood and Lies by Olivia Wildenstein . Now personally I have always loved a good werewolf novel. But I have found it hard to find a good one. Maybe I just don't know where to look. But anyways, I finished this book in 1 day. mind you this book is 350 pages. So its a good sized story.  Before I get too far into my review let me give you the summary I found on Goodreads!

(Alos how pretty is this cover!?!?!)

AH Doesn't that sound amazing! When I read that title I was sold. I was like ok I'm ready to give me the book, ill read the crap out of it. And honestly, I ended up doing just that. Like I said I read this book in one day, so that has to tell you something. It had a very high level of Cant put down-ness.

I can also say I really enjoyed Ness as a character, we do get to see some development when it comes to her character as well as other characters within this book. I will also say the ending was great, no cliffhangers but a strong promise for more.

So if you like werewolves or even just wolves. Characters who are strong in their own way. A fierce female MC who is standing up for her self in a pack of all males. Than i think you have found yourself a book.

If you really liked Kresley Cole and Cassandra Clare you will really love this book. So give this book a try and tell me what you think of it!!

Till next time at the nook!

E.

Special thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. All options are my own and are 100% honest.  Thank you so much for your time!

I LOVED this book! I can't wait to read more. Ness is totally relatable. She has issues. Those who were supposed to help didn't...

Her character grows in this story. Trying to leave a review that doesn't give anything away is hard. So I just think you need to read it. You will love it!

A Pack of Blood and Lies is an amazing story following Ness, a werewolf shifter, who is forced back to her old home in Colorado. Unfortunately for Ness things aren't a seamless transition as she finds herself shunned by her old pack, and discounted for being born a girl.

I don't want to spoil too much so I won't, but the only thing that absolutely needs to be said about this book is how great it was! To say I loved it would be a complete understatement. I engulfed it in one sitting, and wish I had the next one to continue the journey with Ness. I loved the dynamics between her and the pack, and I loved her determination. I loved how it tackled sexism in the pack dynamics, and how Ness was not about to stand for that at all. This was everything I wanted in a werewolf shifter book, and more. I adored it.

I cannot wait until the next book is available...I need it in my life.

This book was so much fun! That start was a bit rocky and from the first few pages I was questioning if I would like it, but after the first three or four chapters I knew I would definitely finish the story.

A Pack of Blood and Lies follows Ness after she returned to her home town. As the only female shifter born to the pack she’s quite the odd one out and it’s made well known in the first part of the book. As someone who has lost almost eveyone she cared about and was run out of her home six years ago, she now has some issues with forgiving and forgetting.

I really liked Ness. she sounded very immature at the beginning of the book but the further into it you get, the more she’ll grow on you with her revealed character traits.
She wasn’t afraid to make her opinion known or call any of the men around her out. Characters Ness’ age often make seriously dumb decisions, but Ness didn’t recklessly put herself in situations that would have you rolling your eyes. There is a question going around now; What character do you think you’re most like? I never answered it before now, but I think I’m similar to Ness and I’m not annoyed by that in the slightest.

Of course then you also have Liam and the secondary characters. I like how Wildenstein presented these characters. Ness has a huge prejudice against almost everyone, especially Liam, but the way Wildenstein wrote it this reminded me of the prejudice of Elizabeth Bennet against Mr Darcy. I know that’s a bold statement to make but I could definitely find similarities in the relationships.

The secondary characters were shown in a way that you were suspicious of everyone, therefore not paying attention to obvious signs that could show who was really the bad guy here. There was a contrast created between the characters Ness was expected to trust and rely on and the ones she did. This made the book a lot more interesting, even if it didn’t have a heavy storyline.

I don’t have a specific group to recommend this book to, because I honestly believe that everyone can find something about it to enjoy. From contemporary lovers who want a story about a girl returning after running away to fantasy lovers who want a competition. Even people who want a standalone, as the end wraps up greatly while also leaving an opening for the next book to continue with.

I’m very excited to continue Ness’ story in the next book. This one was quite character driven, as it was mostly about Ness, her character development and finding her place in the pack. With the first book being an introduction to the world and characters, I can only imagine what Wildenstein has in store for us next.

A PACK OF BLOOD AND LIES by Olivia Wildenstein is a first book in a new YA paranormal romance trilogy. And what a GREAT start it is!

I must say that I LOVED everything about this book. The PLOT was ENTERTAINING. The CHARACTERS were FLAWED, hence, PERFECT and real, well developed, some of them were very lovable, especially, LIAM. The WORLD was INTRIGUING. The ROMANCE was BEAUTIFUL.

The thing you must remember is that they are not humans but werewolves, therefore, their believes, culture and way of life will not be the same as ours, however, MC Ness does fight the sexism and is not quietly accepting of the way of these wolfs. Even though her pack is flawed and at times quite horrible to her, at the same time they are also protective, loyal and easy to fall for. I enjoyed the dynamics between her and the pack.

I liked Ness a lot but I LOVED LIAM. Liam is everything that you want a werewolf alpha to be. I enjoyed the chemistry between Liam and Ness. I enjoyed this thrilling story with all the ups and downs. There was tension, romance, bromance, action, danger and excitement filled pages. I ENJOYED IT ALL.

This book was everything a werewolf book should be and more. I CAN’T WAIT TO READ MORE. I want more of Liam and Ness, of their and Boulder wolves pack’s story. I’m so very glad that I got this ARC from NetGalley because otherwise I could have lost an opportunity to read one of my new favourite books. This book put Olivia Wildenstein on my radar, as I will be checking out her other books now.

5 STARS TO THE BEST WEREWOLF BOOK EVER.A Pack of Blood and Lies by Olivia Wildenstein is on my list of TOP10 books read in 2018. And this new trilogy is number 5 on my most anticipated books of 2019.

I received this ARC from Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for a review.

--

Alright, so honesty time: when I was applying for different ARCs on Netgalley, I saw the description for A Pack of Blood and Lies and thought, "Well fine. I guess I'll request it." I was not enthused. And of course, it was the first book that Netgalley gave to me. It took about 7 weeks for me to get around to reading it. I get nervous about reading werewolf books because nothing has struck me as really engaging since I read Blood and Chocolate when I was a teenager. So I put off reading A Pack of Blood and Lies.

I AM DUMB AND I ASK YOUR FORGIVENESS, OLIVIA WILDENSTEIN/NETGALLEY GODS. A Pack of Blood and Lies was funny, fast-paced, and romantic as hell and I highly recommend it.

The premise is that Ness, a 17 year old girl, has been scraping by to make ends meet after her mother dies; her only real companion is a neighbour who befriended Ness and her mother when they first came into town, six years before. They left Boulder, Colorado after Ness's request to join the Boulder werewolf pack (to which her father had belonged before he was killed, and which she ostensibly grew up in) was denied by the pack's Alpha and they were run out of town. Unable to change into a wolf after she is away from the pack for a while (and with the help of some medication that apparently stops werewolves from transforming when they need to-- full moons and such), she leads a normal life and struggles to pay off the debts from her mother's funeral.

Her father's extended family show up, demanding that they return with her until she is of age, and she's left with little choice but to go with them, working at the hotel that her aunt and uncle run and trying to keep her nose out of pack business. Turns out, the pack's Alpha has been killed and the entire pack is convening in order to select a new Alpha and the heir apparent is Liam Kolane, the son of the last Alpha (who was a really awful person, no lie). She assumes the worst of Liam and despite being the only female in the entire pack, she throws her hat in the ring for the title of Alpha, going through a series of challenges with Liam and two other competitors while trying to figure out mysteries surrounding her father's death, the fact that she's a girl in an all-male pack, and where she belongs-- if she belongs-- in this world.

Please note: content/trigger warnings for mentions of sexual assault/rape-- they happen early on-- and for brief discussions of past domestic abuse.

Things I Loved:
- Ness's voice as a narrator is funny, punchy, and to the point. She reads on the page as if she were standing in the room, telling you the story, and I was incredibly engaged by Wildenstein's style.
- Liam and Ness's slow burn, misunderstanding-riddled romantic arc was fantastic. Liam managed to be broody but also a fairly decent dude at the same time.
- Ness's friendships (as they developed) with other members of the pack, but also with other women in other packs, were a great way to help settle her in Boulder and really made the dynamic of werewolf pack come alive for me.
- The mechanics of werewolf-dom worked well. I thought enough was explained that I wasn't dwelling on the "well how would that..." kind of questions that usually distract me when reading werewolves or other shifters.
- The plot points outside of the coming-of-age and where-is-home story were actually very solid. There were enough interesting things happening that it kept me engaged and guessing and forming theories.
- There were healthy (if complicated) relationships all around Ness that made her struggles feel much more real. Not just within the pack, but also outside of that world.
- The humor was right up my alley, no lie.

Things I Liked:
- Ness's characterization was good, but at times she was whiny. I feel she has every single right to be whiny, for real, but it doesn't make it slightly less annoying to read. It's a fine balance with these things and I do think it was done well, so I wasn't overwhelmed with a sense of her as a self-centred idiot.
- The mystery of how the pack's previous Alpha died was interesting but dragged on a little bit, to be honest. It's one of those things where if anyone had just talked to the other person or didn't have the thought "hmm well I guess this can wait til tomorrow!" then it would have all been a lot more transparent. (However, I must admit that the "I'll just tell him later!" plot thing drives me absolutely bananas and it makes me so anxious and angry. So that's on me.)
- The bits and pieces of the relationship between friends that Ness observed at a distance (specifically a lot of the younger pack members) were sufficiently complex and interesting, rather than being a lot of "hey bro" moments.

Things I Disliked:
- I wish the "only girl in the whole pack!" thing had been addressed far sooner than it was. I didn't have a sense of how much of an anomaly it was because it was mentioned and then we moved on. Also, it seemed DEEPLY out of character for the pack's former Alpha to have denied her access to the pack given the reasoning that was given, which has to do with her parentage, rather than the fact that he was a misogynistic bag of flaming dog poo.
- The women in the story who were dating or married to pack members... I wanted to know a LOT more about that whole situation and I felt like that could have been addressed more solidly in a simple conversation with one of the girls Ness befriended. Those girls-- in contrast with other female characters in the book and with one notable exception-- all seemed a little bit dumb and flat.
- The ambiguity of her relationship with a certain deployed soldier via text message. It seemed super unnecessary for most of the story, until the end, in which I read clearly that there was something being set up for a future book... but I could have been less exasperated during those brief interludes if there was more of a sense of that in the beginning.

So, all said, I'd really recommend this book. I'm really looking forward to reading the sequel and will be following Olivia Wildenstein's work from here on out because her sense of pacing, voice, and character development all really swept me away. If you're a werewolf fan, this is FOR SURE for you. If you like slow burn, sorta enemies to lovers tropes, then this is for you. If you like sassy, strong but often clumsy or in-the-wrong main characters, then this is for you. And if you just want a good, quick YA fantasy read that will have you laughing and grimacing in equal measure, this could also be a great choice for you.

I want to thank Netgalley for providing me an Arc of this book in exchange for my honest review.

First of all I want to say how much I loved this book!
At first glance I thought I was going to be a typical werewolf storyline but I was pleasantly surprised and found I couldn’t put this book down.

I adored our main character Ness she was so badass.
I also love the dynamics between her and the pack considering she was shunned for being born a girl in an all male pack.
She was able to stand up for herself amid all the sexism and hate being thrown her way and I loved her for that.

Overall this is everything I could have ever wanted from a werewolf book.
I devoured this book in one sitting and when I finished I immediately wished I had the next book.
If I could give it more than five stars I would because I haven’t enjoyed a book like this one in a long time.

I adored this book and I couldn't put it down the whole way through. The characters are easy to connect with and feel their emotions and internal battles. The main character is strong and never backs down, which is always great for a female lead. This title is filled to the brim with raw emotion, tragedy, betrayals, and unexpected love. I would say this is definitely for mid to older teens, but I would highly recommend.

There is nothing I love more than a bad ass female MC- I think our world needs as many of them as possible- so when I was approved for this book I was beyond stoked to start. I found that I was quickly sucked in and taken for a ride riddled with twists and turns that shocked me! I really enjoy Ness' and Liam angsty relationship!

Heart-pumping and intriguing A Pack of Blood and Lies is brilliantly written and entertaining. This is the first time I’ve read a book by this author but I’m now a devoted fan!

This is one of the best paranormal reads ever!

I’m obsessed. This book is addicting and page-turning. I loved every second of it; From the push and pull of the main characters to the mystery.

I loved all the characters and hope they each get their story told.

This book has a kickass heroine and a bunch of badass werewolves. Oh my!

This book was amazing and gripped me from the very first page. There was absolutely nothing I did not like.

This author made her mark on me. Make no mistake, I will be continuing this series while keeping an eye out for this author’s future works.

I received an ARC of this book via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

AYYYEEEEEE.

What's me without werewolf stories? Nothing. Nada. So of course when I saw this, I just HAD to get it in my library and in my noggin. Couple werewolves with a strong female lead and it was already a winner.

Ness. Strong, misunderstood female with a s***ton of things to prove to an all-male pack of hard headed, ignorant jerks and the key to my heart. With my love for her type of character, it was easy to like her steel willpower and stubbornness when it came to proving herself. She did what she needed to do to survive, but never really forgot who she was.

The plot was amazing. What's not to love about a woman who's not allowed in the pack fighting to be the alpha whilst also finding out the truth behind her past and losses? The author did a great job at keeping me guessing the answers to the questions behind what happened to her parents and the mystery going on within the pack.

Honestly, the entire time I read this, I was glued to my phone because my kindle was dead. I started reading it at about 2pm and finished it at 8pm. Four. Hours. It took me 6 hours to read the entire book. Normally, a book around this length has me finishing after about a full day of reading (with plenty interruptions) at work. That's enough proof to show how entirely addicted to this book I was. I'm so utterly excited to continue on with the next book!

A Pack of Blood and Lies
by Olivia Wildenstein

This was an amazing read. The first in a trilogy. Wildenstein will hook you with just the prologue giving you a sense of the harsh lifestyle in lower class level in L.A..

Ness, who lost her father 6 years earlier and her mother only a mere few moths ago, comes face to face with her past who chased them away.

Forced to go back to the place she was raised, Ness comes face to face with the former Alphas son, Liam. Being the only female born to a male pack, Ness views almost everyone as a hostile. While she was always shunned for being female, she decided to show the males that now on the verge of adulthood, she would put her name in for Alpha.

Join Ness and Liam, as they struggle with not just the trials of the competition, but also with who they are becoming as adults and their place in the world.

I throughly enjoyed this book and can’t wait for the second of this trilogy.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Note: I received this book from NetGalley and I voluntarily give this review, it is my honest opinion.

A Pack of Blood and Lies was unbelievable good and I loved every minute of it. This is the first book by Olivia Wildenstein that I have read and she has done an amazing job. I don't really know if I can give a proper review without giving to much away but I will try.

Ness is a werewolf without a pack, she was born into a pack of nothing but males and being the only female made her an outcast. When her father is killed she asks to officially join the pack, the cruel alpha and the rest of the pack did not let her join so her and her mother fled Boulder to go and make a life in Los Angels. There Ness was a lone-wolf and grew up without shifting until certain events forced her go back to Boulder, back to the back that did not want her. There she faces the same prejudices and something bigger is going on and Ness is gonna have to be tough enough to stand up for herself and to fight for what she wants.

I am a sucker for a werewolf story and I wish I have more ya werewolf stories in my library. So when I found A Pack of Blood and Lies, I will admit I totally geeked out. The story was a little different from I thought it was going to be. The thinking of males of the Boulder pack are stuck in the past and have not evolved to the current times. They believe that females are weaker and shouldn't be werewolves, they are proud of their all male pack and treats Ness as she is inferior.

However Ness is a tough cookie, she is smart, a hard worker, sassy, courageous and a smart-ass, so of course I love her. Even after everything she has been through in her life she still finds things to be grateful for, things to care about. I love that she refuses to let the guys boss her around and has a comment for everything they through at her. Ness has a plan and she sticks to it, even when things get hard. She is such an open person to people who really care about her and after everything she has been through and the things the pack puts her through she doesn't let that turn her into a bad person.

The plot of this book was wild and I loved it. There are so many mysteries, why is Ness the only female Boulder werewolf, what really happened to the pack's Alpha, what really happened in the past and so much more. Things were so connected, things from the past connected to the present, people connected to each other and there were a couple of plot twists that I did not see coming. The story flowed so nicely, I didn't feel the lull that can sometimes happen and the verbal sparing between Ness and certain members of the pack was really good.

A Pack of Blood and Lies has everything mystery, romance, a competition, revelations, betrayal, and so much more. So many of my questions were answered but there was a scene at the end that made me think that a certain situation is going to happen and I am so ready for it. I have questions and I need the answers. If you love werewolf books, a kick-ass heroine, a few mysteries and excellent plot then I suggest you grab this book as soon as you can.
