Ok - I’m going to start with my overall impression - this was a very entertaining read! It had some downsides for me (see below) but despite those things, this is still a 4 Star book for me! This was a very interesting take on explaining Egyptian mythology and I really liked it!! It’s set up for a continuation, and I’ll definitely be looking for the next book in the series!

This was certainly an action-packed book, but was still somehow kind of slow-paced. For me, the story and character development seemed to be sacrificed for a lot of that action. That’s not to say it wasn’t good - but I think I would have liked more story development/Ancient Egyptian mythology and fewer car chase and narrowly-escaped-danger scenes (if that makes sense).

The other downsides, for me, were that the story was kind of predictable at times, the main bad guy was a stereotype of the angry scary villain, and the motivations of the evil “Society” didn’t feel very genuine (hard to explain what I mean here - I understood what they wanted, but it just didn’t seem very fleshed out - again, maybe another casualty of all the action scenes). Also, some of the character’s motivations/actions weren’t always super clear.

Finally, it jumps to different character’s points-of-view randomly, and it wasn’t always clear at first whose thoughts we were in. The majority of the time it seemed unnecessary to be changing narrator, but maybe that’s just my preference.

Still, I give this book a solid 4 stars! I can’t wait to read more in this series!

Have I been living under a rock?

Why am I finding about this insanely magnificent book only now?

Why didn’t I read this as soon as it released?

I am so sorry you beautiful work of story telling art!

‘Heir of Ra’, the first book in a new series is a dream come true for me.

It has mythology

It has sci-fi

It has mystery & suspense

It has action & adventure

Ticks all my boxes of bookish goodness and how!!

I think… I am in love.

(On a side note, I would like to inform you that in the context of books I will be falling in love every other day. The same however, does not apply to humans)

Once you move past the gorgeous magical cover, you find yourself at the Giza plateu, Egypt in 1913. Picture yourself standing in a recently excavated tunnel beneath the foresaken sand.

You look on as a nobleman makes a thrilling discovery even though you still don’t know what it is. The ripples of the author’s written words tell you that it is a discovery like no other.

You might even feel like leaning in, wanting to understand what it is when all goes haywire. Those who entered the tunnel will never come out again.

And the desert does what is natural to it…

“…the desert sand reclaimed her land, reshaping it in the image of the wind.”

The story now shifts to the present day South Peru and thousand feet above the ground, climbing a mountain with a rope harness is a 17 year old girl.

Meet our heroine Alyssa Morgan, daughter of archeologist Dr. Kade Morgan, who tags along and participates in all of her father’s excavations.

But this time, the Father-Daughter duo are not together. Kade Morgan had to urgently leave for Cairo leaving all the responsibilities of the Peru dig on Alyssa’s ‘high scool senior’ shoulders.

Alyssa’s father is searching for the fabled Hall of Records

“a library purported to have dwarfed the great Library of Alexandria, containing the history and technology-a technology far more advanced….”

which is supposedly located under the Great Sphinx of Giza!

That is the only reason he leaves all his work and rushes to Cairo without Alyssa. Kade Morgan had finally got the sanction to dig under the Great Sphinx to search for the Hall of Records.

Alyssa tries to get to her Dad before he enters the dig but soon finds out that someone doesn’t want her there.

Things get worse when she is informed that there had been an accident and her Dad along with his team has been exposed to a virus no one has seen before, inspite of their bio-containtment suits.

Kade Morgan was now in Level-4 isolation.

But Alyssa Morgan has never let anyone else control the reins of her life. She might be just 17 but Alyssa has seen a lot of the world… literally.

She is determined to find out what went wrong at the excavation site. It has been termed as an accident but…Alyssa is not convinced.
Being the gutsy damsel who gives other people stress, Alyssa Morgan was managing things pretty well. But some company never hurts.

She unexpectedly meets Paul who becomes her loyal ally to the extent that he is willing to follow Alyssa even to the depths of hell… literally.

Now what can I possibly mean by this ‘literally’?

You would have to read ‘Heir of Ra’ to find out.

And read you should…. because you would miss out on something epic if you don’t. The effortless amalgamation of science fiction and Egyptian mythology is fascinating.

At the end of ‘Heir of Ra’ you get a glimpse of a possibly larger secret that is under wraps. A diving board to jump into the second book, if you will.

And that brings me to my humble request to the author-

Please, oh please, good Sir…give me the second book as soon as possible or I might just…… shrivel up.

NOT an exaggeration. That is a very serious book nerd condition!

I received a complimentary copy of this book through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

Alyssa must help her father, fight off a group of dangerous people all while attempting to unlock the secrets of an ancient civilisation. The Hall of Records had always plagued Alyssa and her father, Kaden, ever since her mother’s death. When the time comes to unearth the Hall, Alyssa is on the other side of the world, unable to be there with Kaden. But when things take a dangerous turn, Alyssa will go on a journey she never would have expected, hopping from one part of the globe to another in a matter of days.

Kaden and his colleagues are infected with a disease, the only hint of a cure rests with a pyramid-shaped crystal found in the entrance to the Hall of Records. But to get it back, Alyssa must travel to London and retrieve it from the World Health Organization. There she meets the charming Paul and the young genius Clay. Together they figure out how to unlock the secrets of the crystal.

Paul and Clay were overly British, frequently using British slang and phrases. It was a lot of fun and instantly made me love the boys. I’m so glad Paul joined Alyssa on her journey, he was a great character, a good person and a compelling love interest. Turns out he’s a decent fighter, too.

*Spoiler Warning*

The crystal provided images of an ancient civilisation and the helmet that Clay devised lets you live them. The artefact contains someone’s memories and reveals an ancient culture much more advanced than our own. The point of view change, from she to I, was a masterful touch, making you feel like you’re experiencing the memories yourself, but without revealing who’s memories you’re following. The take on Egyptian mythology was unique and enjoyable, standing out from the other attempts other authors have made.

The evil Society was a believable mix between known secretive groups and the historical figures discussed in the book. George Renley was the first explorer to go looking for the Hall of Records and go missing. He has had something to do with the Society, either as inspiration or a member. The author was skilled at showing the dual opinions within one organisation, two approaches to the same goal.

I really loved this book. The blurb may make it seem like an urban fantasy – which it was – but a large part of it was mystery based. What is the Hall of Records? What is the disease? What is the artefact, and why does the Society want? It was an intriguing mystery, with plenty of smaller mysteries solved along the way to keep you satisfied. A truly great read for those you want a little taste of fantasy/ sci-fi in their mystery.

I am so grateful I got to read such a great book thanks to Net Galley. Heir of Ra is a book that took me by surprise, I thought it would be good, but I enjoyed it much more than I expected. It was one of my highlights of the new year! I give it 5/5 and am desperate for the next book in the series!

It was fun to read and entertaining, well written and with a great cast of characters.
Highly recommended!

Such an interesting concept! It's mythology mixed with history mixed with sci-fi/fantasy. It follows Alyssa and Paul as they are trying to figure out the mysteries of an ancient artifact and society while a secret force is trying to retrieve it for themselves.
Alyssa was such a fun, strong, and skillful heroine. She seemed smart, resourceful, fast thinking and at the same time loving and caring. Her relationship with Kade seemed genuinely real and good, if complicated. I also enjoyed how her relationship evolved with Paul. He's an enjoyable character too. A perfect partner in crime - not cowardly, fast thinking, and gentlemanly.
The thrilling adventure, fast pace, charming characters was what kept me involved in this worldly chase. Overall a good book, and would enjoy reading the sequel.
One note, I'd say it is more of an adult sci-fi/fantasy book than a YA, as the "kids" are University students.

Alyssa Morgan has been traveling and helping her dad since her mom died. She is working in Peru on an archaeology dig as instructed by her dad. When her dad calls to tell her that he has gotten permission to excavate the Great Sphinx of Giza for one day, she decides that she will be there to help her dad. When she arrives, she discovers that her father is in the hospital with a mysterious illness. It is an illness he got at the Sphinx. Doctors don’t know what the illness is but it is starting to spread. While visiting her dad in disguise as a doctor, he tells her what was found. A triangular crystal is in his bio suit pocket. She manages to get it with help from an Oxford student, Paul is on an internship. With help of Paul’s friend Alyssa discovers that she can go back in time and see Egypt through a male eyes. That male is to become a ruler. Meanwhile, Alyssa must outsmart dangerous enemies to keep the crystal from them.

This story is incredible. It is a mystery, thriller with ancient Egyptian themes. Alysssa is portrayed as a strong heroine. The novel is action packed with twists and turns you don’t see coming.

I received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Heir of Ra is one of those books that you can't put down after you start it. Well, it was for me. It's fast paced and definitely holds your attention. Okay, again.. this could just be me.

In this wonderful book, you will meet Alyssa. She was definitely an interesting character and I wanted to see how her relationship with her dad, Kade, was going to turn into. Things were very complicated between the two, which you can see in the beginning of this book. Now this is the complete opposite of my relationship with my Dad, we are besties who drink wine together. Throughout the book though, you can definitely tell that these two love each other will all they've got and it shows. This whole father-daughter relationship just put an epic smile on my face.

Besides the family aspect of this book, there's some romance. Alyssa and Paul were cute and adorable. They are two people who were kind of put in each other's path. These two worked really well together in any situation that was thrown at them. However, their romance was just like a teasing hint. It's there and you can see it.. but you don't feel it yet. I want more in the next book - a lot more!

Oh, and please no love triangle!

Besides all of that, I hate cliffhangers. I despise them so much because then it's that terrible waiting game you have to play because the next book isn't freaking available. I NEED THE NEXT ONE GUYS!

Let me preface this by saying I love all things Egyptian! I really didn’t know what to expect from “Heir of Ra” but what I found was a great adventure with lots of wonderful Egyptian Mythology. It was full of magic, suspense, mystery and more! I could go on. It had a little bit of everything! It was fast paced, the characters had depth, and I finished it in about two days! I cannot wait for the next installment. Perfect for fans of the Kane Chronicles and Indiana Jones. This was a stunning debut by M. Sasinowski!

4 stars

First Thought
Ok for a book cover how badass does this look! The first thing that caught my eyes is the gem the bird is holding, as it seems to be protecting it. Secondly, I saw the faint writing above the raven head of the author and to be honest because of the colour choice it was hard to distinguish what was written. Thirdly, the quote on the book is jaw dropping “Hisstory warned us. We didn’t listen.” Overall I believe that the cover is just breathtaking as well as designed perfectly for what the book is about.
“We are born naked, wet, and hungry – then things get worse.”

Strength
This fast-paced, action pack & breathtaking books was one of my favourite for a while! I was able to read this 304 pages masterpiece in 2 days. My favourite part of this book was the brutal story of Horus even thought we only saw flashes of it. I am usually not the type of liking the different points of view but for this particular novel it worked great (I would have only specified which POV we were in, maybe right thier name, time frames, and location before the paragraph).

Weakness
This book would have been stronger if the writing was a little more advanced (narrated). The ending well let’s just say it was a little too rushed in that last chapter. (narration is the key here) Also, what is she up too? Is she trying to find out more about her family? What about Paul and Alyssa do we just move on no explanation if their relationship could grow (Please no love triangle in the second book!!!!)

Writing
For some reason, the written skills lacked detailing throughout the book. In the first chapter, the author pushed to explain vivid details of the place that is surrounding the character example;
“Lord George really studied the carving in the stone door, his lips pursed in an expression of perpetual disapproval”… “Every detail was exquisitely crafted, from the wings, unfurled gracefully in flight, to its curved talons locked around a glimmering, triangular object.”
Wow, I am amazed how the author makes you feel like you are right there with the character but unfortunately, after that first chapter, the details of the environment aren’t as strong. As for example, our main character Alyssa is climbing the Chinisiri Mountain the author forgets to mention the magnitude of the mountain itself.
What does the view/sky look like from the mountaintop?
Is there snow at the top of the mountain? How does it look?
Is she at an incline that makes breathing harder? Is it getting colder?

As an archaeologist who has always dreamed of permission from the Ministry of Antiquities to work on a dig in Egypt, this book seemed like it was written especially for me. So to say I was excited to be given a copy of this in exchange for a review is an understatement. Once I picked it up, I read it in just a few sittings as it was a very fast-paced, easy read.

It had a lot of elements of some other popular books, like the Da Vinci Code and the Percy Jackson series, but it's managed to carve out its own niche within the YA mythology genre. Our heroine, Alyssa, is a scrappy, independent young woman with some pretty intense determination. She was a little bit hard to like at times, but why she was the way she was became a bit more clear toward the end of the book and she became a lot more sympathetic. I’m definitely Team Alyssa now and can see her becoming a major figure in the YA genre.

Despite this book being about mythology and having a lot of magical elements to it, I found those aspects to be the most believable parts of Heir of Ra. It being YA, I’ve given it a lot of leeway in terms of plausibility, but sometimes it just seemed the way she, as a teenager, was able to get around in the world was a bit outlandish even for an action-packed YA story. Still, though, it was a lot of fun to read and by the last third of it, it felt like it had really found its stride and I couldn’t put it down. I’m excited to see what comes next. And I hope we get more Clay next time!

As a side note, I loved how obviously the Minister of Antiquities in the book was Zahi Hawass. In my field he's quite well known and I had a couple chuckles to myself about the way he carried himself. Thanks for that, M. Sasinowski!

Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for a copy of this delightful book. I can’t wait to see where Alyssa goes next.

An archaeological dig embroiled in a mystery filled with twists and turns from underground along with mystical puzzle pieces, that troubles your mind. This adventure started with an exciting bang accelerating full throttle, into an action-packed adventure, with all the bells and whistle, totally engrossing, intriguing and darn right captivating.

This was such a fun book! Action on almost every page, relatable characters and an exciting start of a promising adventure. Will definitely read the next one. To be recommended!

Words cannot express how much I loved this book. I started it at 12:30 am and finished it four hours later. Heir of Ra mixes Egyptian Mythology with biological warfare, early nineteen hundreds secret societies, and the thrilling adventures that are usually reserved for Indiana Jones or Relic Hunter. Mr. Sasinowski creates rich characters that pop off the page, giving them realistic backgrounds and bringing each of the character through growth spurts that keeps the reader guessing what will happen next. There are a few loose ends but since there will be a sequel, those should be wrapped up then. I, personally, can't wait for the next book.

I really enjoyed this!
Fantastic pace, action packed, and with Tomb Raider/Indiana Jones feels throughout, it was a great YA adventure combining the modern world, future (or ancient) science, and really likeable characters, an empowered young woman (whose life reminds me of Claire from Outlander) and who isn't at odds with the men in her life just because she 'should' be. Paul was a good balance to Alyssa, and I liked that even the bad guys were not blindly loyal to a questionable cause.

Twists and turns keep you guessing even when you think you have it figured out and I loved the proposed timeline in this, with Egypt's mythology given just a drop of sci-fi possibility!

It ended really nicely - and you can 100% leave it there and be satisfied, even with the temptation dangled in front of you in epilogue!

Definitely recommended to action/adventure fans, Egyptian mythology (or any mythology!) fans, and worthy of an extra half star (but I can't give it!)

Thank you to NetGalley, and the author for this copy.

Excellent YA adventure novel and hopefully the first of at least 3. Alyssa is an incredible character with strength and wit plus her love of family. The story teases with a little potential romance that I would love to see grow as the storyline continues. Reminded me heroines from the Lunar Chronicles another well written YA series. This should definitely be on everyone's "wish-to-read" list!

I've always loved mythology, especially Egyptian, and I have to say that i really enjoyed reading the Heir Of Ra.
It was fast paced, great main character, also... the flashbacks were really cool!

Thank you so much for a copy, again, I highly recommend :)

Ancient artifacts of great power, nasty villains desperate to lay hold of them for nefarious ends? Likable, outgoing characters trying to buck the odds and win the day despite long odds? Old civilizations shrouded in mystery that could hold the keys to our future? What's not to like? This young adult novel checks all the boxes for me as a fun adventure with an interesting backstory that should be good for more novels in the future. Took a little while to get going for me, and sure, the main characters get out of some spots they shouldn't have, but this is a young-adult novel after all. Recommended.

I really enjoyed this book. The world building was done very well. I loved the characters. I do feel it is very character driven so I like that. I really went into this not remembering the synopsis. I could not remember why I requested it but I am so glad I did not reread the synopsis. I love going into the book not knowing what it is about. To me, it helps me to get to the know the plot and characters better. I don't judge before going in.

I do highly recommend this book.

Heir of Ra is a fun read.  It is easy to read, the plot is fast paced. Characters that are interesting, and great mix of locations. I could easily picture this book on the big or little screen. The mixture of history and mythology takes Heir of Ra in  a direction that surprised me and kept each page interesting. The feeling I am left after reading Heir of Ra is that there is a much bigger picture. I am keen to see what happens next for Alyssa. Alyssa is the lead character in Heir of Ra, she would definitely give Indiana Jones a run for his money. In knowledge and trouble hey get into. Heir of Ra has;ActionMysteryArcheology DramaMythology If you like any of these elements in a book that I would pick it up. My rating for Heir of Ra is 4 out of 5.

As a fan of egyptian mythology this book made an enjoyable read. It took a little bit to get into the book, but then is was really good. The story was well crafted and the characters relatable as well as likeable. As someone who has a background in biology I always enjoy parts with diseases and illnesses, so an extra point for that
If you enjoy a fast paced story with mythology this is definitely a book for you and you should check it out!

I really enjoyed reading this book. I always loved books and movies with a little bit of archeology in them, and this one was perfect, egyptian mythology is my favourite.

The book was well written, it read almost itself and I fell in love with the characters. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.

I received a copy of this book for a fair and honest review. I love Egyptian Mythology and this checked a lot of the boxes for me. I think I would feel like Alyssa if I was put into some of the same situations that she is. But the foundation of this book was done so well that it makes me want to reach for the next one. I can't want to see what happens next.

Oh my god I really love this book! I throughly enjoyed this fast paced page turner, and I highly recommend reading this one, it doesn’t disappoint!!!

Reading this book was a wild ride from start to finish, and whilst it definitely wasn't what I expected I'm all the more glad for it. The book was fast paced and exciting and the action started from page one and really didn't let off until the conclusion of the book. There was so much to this book and I really loved the duel timeline of "now" vs. "Ancient Egypt". And having the flashbacks occur from the perspective of an Egyptian "God"? Brilliant.

Alyssa (the MC) was one bad ass 16-year-old., kicking ass and taking names from the get-go and I really loved seeing how things came together between her and the other characters. Her relationship with her father was - in a word - complicated but there was clearly a lot of love, affection and respect between the two and I thought their dynamic was brilliant. Even with the limited appearance of her father in this book their relationship was so clear.

I also really loved the slight hint at romance between Alyssa and Paul. It really wasn't any more than a "teaser" (likely to be elaborated on in a sequel book), but that was all I needed. The fact that the romance wasn't a focal point in this was very much appreciated! Because really - with everything else that was going on it wouldn't have made any sense for there to be some whirlwind romance thrown in there and if there had been one it would have felt forced to me.

This book was a great blend of fantasy, science fiction and mythology and if you're a fan of series such as Indiana Jones or Tomb Raider I'm sure you'll thoroughly enjoy this too! Exciting from the get-go and has so much to offer. Highly recommend :)

This book is an interesting take on Egyptian mythology.
I think I would have liked it more if maybe there were indications of the shift in character point-of-views because one moment or chapter your reading as the main character and then as some other character in the book. It would take me a moment to realize the shift, because the characters' tones and moods were so different.

Overall, I did enjoy reading the book. Heir of Ra catches your attention from the very beginning and you want to keep reading it to know what's going to happen next.

I would definitely recommend to anyone who enjoys this genre of books.

The story pulled me in and wouldn’t let go.
Alyssa is like Lara Croft. She is reckless and smart and determined and is willing to do anything to save her father. I liked Alyssa from the start and am curious what will happen to her in the next book.
Heir of Ra is full of excitement, action and even has some romance which lightened the story some. I can very well imagine Heir of Ra as a series on TV.

Oh…my…god…I LOVED this book! This was easily one of my top 5 reads this year so far! I could not put it down, and I finished it in one sitting! It was adventurous, intriguing, and full of action and humor. It was an intense thrill ride that had me shocked at every twist and turn! It easily differentiated itself from other YA books by boasting the importance of family, respect for your elders, and education!

Loved it from the very first page! Very fast paced and always kept me on my toes! One of my favorite things was how the author really used the show vs tell method to really bring the reader in!

Heir of Ra by M. Sasinowski

Hall of Records, the library under the famous Sphinx in Egypt, does it exist? Or just a myth? A team of scientists go investigate and - die. Ancient artifact, deadly virus, mythical creatures, murderers and killers.

This book was so much fun! I picked it up because I'm a sucker for Egyptian and also Atlantis inspired stories. Weirdly gave me some Stargate vibes, was such a fun ride! It was action packed, fast paced, adored the characters! I need to get a copy for my shelves as soon as possible ahah.
The writing was incredibly done,

IT WAS SO GOOD.

The story is intriguing and full of action, the characters are solidly elaborated, and I am convinced that younger and adult readers will like it. The story takes us into a world of archeology, secret societies, and hidden secrets that archaeologists discover with each new day. Some secrets are hidden from the public, and this book, although as a fiction, examines such one of the secrets.
